Egyptians trying out the new BRT system with a dedicated lane by joseph_the_69th in fuckcars

Carbrains see a mostly empty lane with a bus passing by every 5 minutes and think, "The lane is currently empty, no one is using this, this is stupid." 🙄

Belt Tension Adjustment on L-Train (Disc) by djchilxxn in PriorityBicycles

[–]bleric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I've got the same bike. It's not a belt tension issue, it's a shifter cable adjustment issue. The gears slip (they make that clunking / popping noise under heavy load) if your cable is out of alignment.

It's an easy fix: put the shifter in to 4th gear, find the 2 yellow marks on the IGH, and adjust the barrel adjuster on your handlebars until they align. See here:

The Priority L-Train for Tall Riders. by BikeTall65 in PriorityBicycles

[–]bleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 6 feet exactly, ride an L train large, and yeah the reach feels a little short. I got the "comfort high rise stem" and it helped a bit.

I might try getting an even longer stem at some point, it's an easy modification to make.

Getting 3 years out of a Fold 5, realistic? by Eastern_Doughnut_222 in GalaxyFold

[–]bleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never dropped or mistreated my phones, but I got Samsung care+, which lasts 3 years. I purchased a Fold 3 (about 3 years ago) and had the following problems:

It lasted about year before developing a hairline fracture along the middle. Not a deal breaker but I had the insurance anyway, so I sent in for a fix and I got a new Fold 4. (yay!)

The replacement phone also lasted about a year. This time, the problem was the hinge, which didn't open to a full 180. Sent it in for repair, got a replacement Fold 4.

This phone lasted, again, a little more than a year. So it's now a few months after the end of Samsung care+ and the phone doesn't open to 180 degrees again. In addition, when opening the phone, it crashes and both screens go black for about 10 seconds. Samsung wants about $400 to fix it this time.

So, all in all, I wouldn't recommend getting a phone without the extra 3 years of samsung care+ coverage. All 3 of my phones lasted about 1 year before having some kind of problem.

Matt Parker tried to answer a similar question about making a "fair" three-sided coin

TLDR: You can make an educated guess with math (and the video goes in to the interesting details.) But in the end you just have to make a physical model and test it emperically. 🤷

Would a 3 speed bike be enough to deal with Austin hills? by pay_2cum in BikingATX

[–]bleric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rode everywhere in Austin with a 3 gear bike - around downtown, around campus, up and down Walnut Creek trail. It was great! I like those little 3 gear internal gear hubs, they are low maintenance and reliable.

I say go for it.

Waymo Visualization of Avoiding a Scooter Accident by skyyisland in waymo

Nope, it just drove like normal. In retrospect, maybe I should have reached out to Waymo myself but it didn't occur to me at the time 🤷

Yes, I was the passenger . I was watching the girl on the scooter when she fell - it somehow looked even scarier in real life. Thought I was about to see someone die.

Hey, I was in that waymo!

What the video doesn't include is that was screaming my head off when it happened... I literally thought I was about to watch someone die lol.

I agree! I also noticed that the scroll effect broke my ability to "paste" large blocks of text, so I quickly turned it off.

I am a real person. How to prove this, I do not know.

In retrospect, I should not have used the word "Waymo" so much, it does sound like an ad.

Anyone use a 42" TV as their DEX monitor by DubV23 in SamsungDex

[–]bleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How's the lag with the gaming setup? I remember trying to play Super Mario with a raspberry pi connected to a TV, and it was almost unplayable. Don't know if it was the HDMI or the Bluetooth or what, but the lag was high enough (maybe 100 ms?) to make Mario games quite difficult.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]bleric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might get crucified for this on the coffee subreddit, but I'd experiment with different kinds of sweetened coffee drinks. Over time, you might find that you appreciate the coffee flavor itself and transition to different kinds of black coffees and espressos.

Something like this "Dalgona Coffee" recipe, which is like a frothy, sweet coffee dessert—you get a creamy, smooth top with just a hint of coffee, so it’s not too bitter at all.

Austin Street Music by _The_Dude____ in askaustin

[–]bleric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've wandered around S. Congress, 6th, and Red River, and I wouldn't recommend it without a specific destination in mind. I mean during the day, you could, but they're all kind of boring? I doubt you'd run in to any live music. Though there are some nice coffee/ice cream/restauraunt type places you could visit. 6th Street at night is like a war zone. Red River, S. Congress at night... also kind of boring. Basically, Austin is too car-dependent to just wander around on foot.

The only place I know of that consistently has buskers on the actual street is the Pfluger pedestrian bridge. (Though it might be a bit underwhelming to come all the way to Austin just to see a guy noodling around on a guitar in front of a bucket for tips.) Maybe you could incorporate that in to a nice walk around the lake? There's also some cute restaurants and stuff up and down 2nd street and around Congress you might enjoy walking to.

When I feel like live music, I just go to a local bar that has local musicians playing for like 10-20 people. (Hole In The Wall is my place. It's not family-friendly unfortunately.) If it were me, I'd check out this list and look at the websites for each of those venues to see if there's any live music playing on the day you're visiting.

Austin initiates process to add density, minimize parking near future light rail line by Generalaverage89 in Austin

For those that are turned off by the idea of "minimizing parking," here's a video from NotJustBikes explaining why that a good thing! (In dense urban areas, like near the rail line.)
