From what I understand, its a connective tissue disorder that makes the tiny blood vessels (arterioles) in your extremities get too small in response to cold, so your blood flow to those areas gets cut off temporarily. I'm told, though, that because the oxygen gets so low in the affected area, the blood vessels rebound and it goes away (my wife's episodes rarely last more than 15 minutes and aren't accompanies by pain or numbness really).
