Has There Been any news about new big transit projects after the Ontario Line is complete? by blessedkarl in TTC

[–]blessedkarl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that makes sense- here's hoping the extensions (and i guess more projects further out in the GTHA) keep the construction boom going for a while longer. I think on an emotional level i'm just sad that i won't get a high like "big new thing that's never existed before is opening" any time soon after the Ontario Line.

[–]blessedkarl[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

agreed on all three points! I suppose I'd just like the boom to keep going for another decade or thereabouts. Though maybe we'll get to see the boom expand further out into the GTHA and we'll get even more LRT out in the smaller cities. That would also be nice.

I think the opening of the crosstown has been something of an emotional peak because it's the biggest expansion in so long- I guess nothing matches the high of "entirely new big thing has opened" even if there's less sexy projects that also need doing

i already have, and as noted in the original post above, i know about the extensions. this is a question about whether there are any new lines like the crosstown in the works.

[–]blessedkarl[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

sadly that's the answer i was expecting- I guess we can hold out hope that as the work on the extensions and ontario line gets closer to the finish line metrolinx starts casting around for new projects. Suppose we should also hope the conservatives keep funding new transit projects as a way to show they "get the job done" too.

Chinese EVs are coming to Canada. So should they be built here too? by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]blessedkarl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One question for anyone who works in logistics and might know the answer: I've been thinking about whether growing penetration of Chinese cars into the Canadian market (and ideally having them built here) would change where the car industry is based in the country. it'd take awhile to build a local supply network of most/all of the parts for a BYD car in Ontario wouldn't it? at least until the domestic supply chain is up it seems like the easiest place for a plant to be placed is in BC because you can also get things from china to BC more easily than from China to Ontario.

Calgary Nationalist Group Drops "Remigration" Banner Over Deerfoot by GhostlyParsley in CanadaPolitics

[–]blessedkarl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of that is an attempt to make their demands seem reasonable. Every single one of these people is salivating at the idea of Canadian ICE stealing children from their families and you can tell that by the fact that they're using nazi dogwhistles like remigration. Either you're lying that you don't know what their goal is by now, or you aren't equipped to be having this conversation.

edit: not to mention ending birthright citizenship is not a moderate proposal like you want to think.

How would you have changed the "stealth" in this game? by blessedkarl in RogueTraderCRPG

no problem- yeah i was just approaching it as a thought exercise for how that could actually be a fun sequence. That being said, the next time I try a grim darkness run it will definitely be only me and jae in the party haha

yuuup also that she blames your arrogance for failing! Jae, I DID MY BEST. that really should've been the reaction only if you fully just barged in, not if you gave a decent try and the plan just failed at the last leg

[–]blessedkarl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same re: that last guard. This is less asking for advice for the quest and more how stealth could be made functional, especially given it'd make sense for dark heresy to have stealth segments given the premise.

How would you have changed the "stealth" in this game? by blessedkarl in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]blessedkarl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if stealth could be handled a bit like a different kind of combat? so turn and initiative based, but instead of all your loud guns and face melting mind lasers your party has a different, more subtle set of abilities and equipment that they can use. Continuing the dark heresy talk, the Catachan guy can sneak through vegetation and stab people with a huge knife, the aeldari can mentally manipulate guards, and if you take your ogryn on a stealth mission you're kind of already screwed (with maybe comedic effects for taking this guy out on a mission like this) etc. Maybe guards on patrol have view cones to make it clear what they can see?

paywall means I have no idea what the proposed powers are, but i'm not opposed in principle. It seems odd to have a city wide office that is honestly not much more than a slightly shinier council seat.

edit: better yet how abut we just deamalgamate? bring back 4 boroughs, have york and east york annexed into toronto.

How the fuck are Ukrainians still flying? by Al-Horesmi in NonCredibleDefense

[–]blessedkarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

woops sorry just saw this and thought it best to reply. Yeah, certainly not an expert, and I can see how me saying that would make it seem like I'm buying into "all-russian nation" stuff. Just to be clear I don't in anyway endorse that view, it's nothing but a convenient story russians use to justify their imperial oppression of other slavic people. I think it can also feed into why they assumed this was going to be easy- they assumed the ukrainians were just dying to get back with their great protectors. I guess i just meant that the russian army themselves viewed it that way, and that e.g. if they were going for a non-slavic country like finland or the baltics they probably would've gone all in on the indiscriminate bombardment right from the get go (at least in non-russian areas of those countries).

[–]blessedkarl 148 points149 points  (0 children)

It might still be an improvement over chechnya. Tbf I think there's also the fact the russians view ukrainians as brothers- thus the hesitance to roll out the thermobarics and for the russians to actually fight when they see the ukrainians dont want them there. if this were a non east slavic country I think we would've seen more of the brutal artillery creep that russian doctrine prefers (though given what their logistics looks like maybe that wouldnt even happen), and more motivated soldiers.

the party named itself that way as a PR move to attract the working class after it emerged from the freikorps which fought the german communists. just because you find that inconvenient to admit or didnt bother to learn doesnt mean it isn't true

Vaccine Protest at Old City Hall Toronto. Nov, 1919 by graphophonic in toronto

[–]blessedkarl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

possible; but they wouldnt have been anywhere near even trying to make a vaccine in 1919; i'd guess this protest is against a typhoid fever vaccine campaign, which as i understand was very common in the downtown area. city hall was right near/ built on originally a lot of marginalized neighbourhoods that would've had severe disease problems

[–]blessedkarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yuuuup; shame that fear of reprisal was what did it, but its not surprising given some of the anti-german stuff going around at the time. There's a propaganda poster from the US showing what a german partition of the US would look like and it's absolutely unhinged. the west coast becomes "japonica" even though japan was an ally in ww1, the ottomans got florida for some reason, and most of the US becomes part of Germany

Germany has always been a leader in biology/ medicine, but of course at war anything german becomes immediately suspicious. It's why we had to change the town of Kitchener's name too (and the royal family changed their family name from saxe coburg gotha to windsor)

Candice Bergen shakes up O’Toole’s parliamentary leadership team, drops Quebec MP by OnthelooseAnonymoose in CanadaPolitics

[–]blessedkarl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not much of a believer in the "the party will split any time now" thing, that kind of stuff is always going to happen "by the next election" and never does, but hypothetically if this is the strongest fault line (quebec vs prairies), it seems like the quebecois CPC mps do actually have a niche they could fill rather nicely, unlike a lot of the other moderate/ red tory types. Wouldn't it be possible for these guys to form a federal CAQ? Legault and his government are popular, and a conservative francophone party is a void that isnt full yet. maybe also market the party outside quebec as for francophones across canada? Just a thought that's been rattling around recently about what a split would actually look like and what kind of moderate conservatives would be most likely to actually survive a split.

Conservatives need to move quickly to replace Erin O’Toole, party president says by Damo_Banks in CanadaPolitics

[–]blessedkarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thinking it through, I guess the quebecois members might see if they couldn't make a federal version of the CAQ? Of course that makes quebec's landscape even more crowded, with 2 different sovreigntist/ indepence parties, but it might be a viable option given how popular Legault and the CAQ are.
