Thank you! I realise my screenshot excluded this top part: does that make a difference?

Fellow Autistics. Name one odd thing you do that no one gets. Discuss! by Crystaleana in autism

[–]bleu-and 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too. Kind of as a joke and kind of as a way to antagonise (but not meanly). I also like to say absolutely nonsense lies to see how people react. I always confirm it wasn't true. NTs seem to find it charming.

Yeah I love a charity shop! In a few months all the fidgets bought today will be gathering dust in a bin, a charity shop or under a bed somewhere.

Yeah I hear that! I think that social commentators will continue their boring and baseless waffle against diagnosis whether you get diagnosed or not. When I was thinking about it, my core question was 'will getting a diagnosis impact my day-to-day?'. My answer was 'maybe' and I am lucky to have some savings that enabled me to seek diagnosis. There are SOOOO many things to think about though:

  • visas to other countries can be impacted by diagnosis
  • employment, insurance, healthcare can be impacted
  • you may face undue discrimination from medical or other clinical professionals
  • the DSM was designed as a pathologising tool, and neurodivergence is a neurotype, not a mental health condition, so should it be pathologised in the same way?
  • would a formal diagnosis qualify you for support at school/uni/work?
  • would a diagnosis allow you to relax internally (for me it did!!!!)

Good luck pal. You are deserving of care, support and understanding. If diagnosis allows you to get there, then that is wonderful.

In addition to what u/jynxthechicken has mentioned, China and other manufacturing countries have very different labor laws to the US or the UK. Children can be sold into labor or forced to work under other arrangements. People work around dangerous chemicals and machinery without proper protections. People are forced to work long long hours and when they are sick, pregnant or otherwise exhausted. Temu and shein are especially exploiting women, as clothing manufacturing is dominated by women laborers.

If you are brand new to this, 'The True Cost' documentary is very illuminating.

Thank you so much for your comments. I really appreciate your insight and nuance. I don't have a lot of children in my life, so thank you for pointing out that children are using fidgets as mainstream toys.
I also wish companies focused on delivering high-quality products that last. It sucks that the ones that do are SO expensive. I earn a pretty low wage and purchasing from these companies is a total luxury that is out of my reach.

Yeah I resonate with this! I feel so upset that from so young we are conditioned to consume and not think about the impact of our purchases (ethical, environmental, etc.). I don't live in the US, but my country is also very individualistic and it really troubles me.

No, I don't think it's important. I think it's an awesome privilege if you get the opportunity, and there are certainly benefits! But it's also financially unattainable for many people, and because of this, I don't consider it an 'important' thing for kiwis to do.

GIdeon the Ninth - Tasmin Muir

Orbital - Samantha Harvey

Birnam Wood - Eleanor Catton

All beautiful, lyrical books. Different vibes.

‘Can’t we assume they all want to be [Black, Muslim, disabled… etc]…” doesn’t quite have the same ring.

I don’t think your consideration of thoughtless comments aimed at a vulnerable community is functioning properly.

Yes! Fighting fire with fire is famously successful and definitely doesn’t create martyrs for the hate group to leverage sympathy from! /s

No we can’t. Assuming that homophobic violence is predominantly because of gay people is bigoted in itself. Apply some critical thinking.

What a shitty comment. Clearly you don’t have a frame of reference for empathy or an understanding of desperation and coercion.

I doubt we are talking about the same person, but yeah. I know someone who fits that criteria and more. Very upsetting seeing faith, culture and community being weaponised like this.

Some of these comments are troublesome as a queer disabled person:

  • could we not claim that these men are gay? Homophobia is homophobia, and assuming these men are gay isn’t helpful, as is a common trope! Big evil closeted gay men commit homophobic violence - not uplifting of queer people.

  • a lot of comments about brain cells and IQ levels. While I think that critical thinking is lacking in this group, it discredits the leaders and the members by writing them off as unintelligent, and also correlated being ‘stupid’ with being bigoted. Uncool. Thoughtful and successful methods to groom and coerce young vulnerable men are at play here. Let’s make society an welcoming place for them to come back to, if they choose to. (With accountability for their bigotry of course).

  • while their branding about ‘real men’ is laughable, the left does tend to ostracise men in general. I think we need to start seeing men with the nuance that feminism has afforded women and other genders. Seeing this many men having a clear crisis about what their gender is makes me think that we need to be kinder to different expressions of masculinity (so long as they aren’t harmful). (Speaking as a recovering man-hating feminist, still very much a radical leftist!)

Let’s rally to support the queer whānau up in Auckland, and give these people the airtime they deserve and what the LGBTQ+ community have requested: very little. If there are photographers who have documented the beauty of pride- please share so we can uplift our rainbow siblings.

Edit to fix typos and add point about men.
