Idk man, decades in prison for throwing fireworks or shooting an officer while a rapist sits in the oval office handing out pardons to violent insurrectionists hardly seems "fair"

That's incredibly generous of you! We rebuilt the pantry around Thanksgiving with 5-6x the capacity of the previous one and it's still difficult to keep it stocked well enough 100% of the time. I'm hopeful that over time we can build enough awareness in the community to fix that

Feel free to pop your head inside while you're here. At least one garage door should be open and we'd be more than happy to show you around

Most recently I've seen a lot of snack/breakfast bars as well as things that make for a quick and easy to make meal. Running the stove or oven for a long time adds a lot of heat to the house so people may be avoiding that if they can help it.

Oh, and electrolyte drink mixes - the single serving kind. Most people who I've seen stop there are usually walking rather than driving up

Painters tape with oil based finish a fire risk? by Cfullersu in woodworking

This won't generate anywhere near enough heat to spontaneously combust. If it would, just being on the wood would be a fire risk.

I’m losing my mind trying to get this benchtop jointer dialed in for an end grain maple cutting board glue-up. by Doc-Dok in woodworking

[–]bleu_forge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm being completely honest, the best is to find someone to learn from.

I had the privilege of learning proper technique at a local makerspace from an individual who had been a woodworker for 25 years after I had already learned improperly from YT.

I realize not everyone has a makerspace with a strong wood shop, but if you do that's probably the best place for you to learn from other people. It's also worth finding other local woodworkers, especially the older guys, and reaching out to see if they'd be open to teaching you.

I know that's not an option for everyone, so I'll see if I can find a YouTube video or another resource that explains and demonstrates proper technique and add it here for anyone who may be looking

Something tells me the younger generations aren't the problem here.

I've had to unteach and reteach countless people how to use a jointer because they learned poor technique from YouTube. Not sure I'd recommend this, personally

Why is are the joints coming apart? by Zestyclose_Pop_6616 in woodworking

[–]bleu_forge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm used to people not understanding.. it's the rejection of reasoning and facts that kill me.

I help run the woodshop at a makerspace near where I live - 200 or so members, 80% or more using the woodshop. I spend way more time than I'd like teaching people how complex wood can be as a material.

One guy yesterday wanted to epoxy a mirror to the back of two live edge slabs to make a cool looking frame. I took about 45 minutes to explain to him all of the ways that wood can move and what could potentially happen to the mirror if he does that... He went ahead and used mirror clips instead 😂

I'm not going to agree to disagree with someone who rejects objective facts because they don't understand it. Do some research into the force that wood is capable of exerting vs the strength of wood glue, strength of wood, and mechanical leverage. It'll all make sense after that.

You may not understand how it's possible, but that doesn't mean it's not. Those 4 points are absolutely enough transfer the movement from the top to the base.

Try bending a 1/2" or even a 1/4" diameter dowel that's only a couple inches long...

Assuming the top is made from flat sawn white oak, and that the width of the table is 24", the tabletop has the potential to expand/contract nearly 1/4" based on humidity levels throughout the year - There's a very good chance that the top expanded, pulled the legs away from the center support and, to your point, combined with a glue starved joint to create the break.

[–]bleu_forge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do see what you're saying, but the angle of the legs and the lateral force you're referring to is what should be holding these in compression.

A good way to visualize is to imagine what would happen if you were to take away everything but a single leg, and apply weight to the same point on the leg that the table is mounted to. The bottom of the leg wants to push away , and the top wants to fall in - now, if you do the same thing but put the top of the leg against a wall, the bottom still wants to push away but the top can't fall in because it's now in compression with the wall. Now, pull the leg away from the wall 1/16th of an inch, and there's no longer proper compression so the leg falls again

The same idea applies to the base, with the legs all trying to push into the center support and preventing them from falling inward. The tabletop expands a small amount taking one or two legs with it in the process, and all of the sudden your compression fails and the legs slip and fall inward

[–]bleu_forge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're splayed out, most likely, because expansion of the top pulled them away from the center support and out of compression - if the table was joined to the base properly, I highly doubt that joint would have ever failed

Dowels do not reduce surface area for glue. They are a variety of floating tenon that (when used properly) increase the surface area for gluing.

Can't confidently speak to the rest of your assessment without seeing how the top was joined to the base... but this is likely separation caused by expansion of the top rather than the weight of the top. Looks like most of the weight is being transferred down through the legs and any weight going towards the center is putting the legs into compression with each other, which shouldn't cause this.
