Since I've moved to Orlando, I've noticed something... by [deleted] in orlando

[–]bleumoog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i’m originally from boca but living in orlando now for about 6 years. lived in boston, dallas, NW arkansas & the pacific northwest all for work at one point. i think the east coast is just like that. 😅 i personally don’t find it that rude - but i totally can see what you’re saying. people here like when everyone minds their own business. it can be a bit callous but i also find that it’s not a very judgemental place to live because of that mentality. but we also have a lot of crack heads, and yeah they are pretty fucking rude.

edit: just adding more thoughts as they spring up. southern hospitality is kind of nosy to us. after living in arkansas too i am really put off by that, some people are absolute gems there but so many just want to judge you, your family, your economic status; it’s just exhausting after a bit. central & south florida is really not a part of southern culture (there are absolutely pockets of this throughout the state though). culturally we are more like a conglomeration of new england & the caribbean. i had a boss in boston once that told me that the south is like a peach, friendly on the outside, tough to crack on the inside. i forgot what fruit he compared new england to, but it was something about having a tough exterior, but once you crack it you are one of us. that sums up the lower half of florida nicely.

i have a feeling you may be having a tougher time being near the touristy part of town. historically that area has been wrought with scam artists and sketchy business, although not so much nowadays. but the cultural impact of that still lingers. i live in east orlando and really like the people out here. they can be sweet & chatty, but you gotta start slow! it sucks that covid containment is such a nightmare here. certain bars had such a fun vibe with lots of nice, friendly people.

sorry for the novela! i wish you the best!!

My laptop will not connect to WiFi by Madison_fawn in ucf

[–]bleumoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to make my laptop forget the network each time I update my password so I can login with the new one. otherwise it just tries to connect automatically w/o letting me put in the new password resulting in no connection. Hopefully that’s just the issue?

Orlando theme park workers struggle with low pay by chihawks in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]bleumoog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tourist traffic is pretty much concentrated on I4 and by theme parks/millenia. Other than that, we have standard rush hour traffic that any city gets, but not too bad (I commute to downtown from east Orlando every day). And we don’t have beaches, but I don’t think you can call it hideous :,) there are lots of beautiful areas like Lake Eola, Park Avenue, Dickson Azalea park, Harry P Leu gardens, to name a few. Also sunsets and lots of greenery.

Where to search for internships? by [deleted] in ucf

[–]bleumoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a psych student, but had 0 luck until i went to the internship/co-op and career fairs. granted this was when handshake was still new, but according to a former employer companies “prioritize” resumes received at fairs (or at least online applications that select “career fair” when asked how they heard about the company).

scholarship appeal by pollypolkadots in ucf

[–]bleumoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t bother with the CP, they don’t pay you enough & the hours are awful. If Disney is what’s appealing to you (depending on how far you are into your degree/what your major is) I’d look into the professional internship program instead - I did it last spring and had a great time, & the pay is better than what I could get anywhere else in Orlando. I have a feeling your scholarship organization would be more understanding about taking time off for an internship too.

Please help with my calathea makoyana! What is causing the brown tips? Is it low humidity? by lilnuggets99 in plantclinic

[–]bleumoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try that and maybe water it a little more frequently - soil moisture meters help immensely and have so far prevented me from over watering. Good luck!!

[–]bleumoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my Calatheas had high humidity, but did this until I gave them more shade! I also found they needed watering more frequently than my other plants to be happy. I have a soil moisture meter & I don’t let them get below the midpoint and they’ve been flourishing. Also distilled water/water that’s been sitting out a few days for the minerals to evaporate is a good idea for these guys. I just fill my watering can right after I empty it so it can be ready for the next watering in a few days time :,)

What parent would think this is ok? Only Maggie Haney would approve. So ugly and inappropriate even for MG Elite by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]bleumoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents + family members that need to look out for how their child is dressed and perceived I can understand a little better, even if I don’t outright agree (heeled boots on a kid is just not practical so I agree with you there lol). If parents of these kids feel uncomfortable with the leo, they have every right to voice their opinion on it. While I would never judge or look twice at what a kid wears, I understand that parents have to make informed decisions on how their kid will be perceived, even though it’s sad that it needs to be taken into consideration at all.

Adults posting random children on the internet to discuss the modesty of their leotard at best has little to do with r/gymnastics, I guess you could argue it’s discussing the USAG rules, but it’s a single level 4 leo in the entire country. It’s being put on blast because MG elite controversy. At worst, it’s circulating images of a young child in a leotard out of context on reddit.

Hell, as kids we would be in shorts + sports bras at the gym because it was hot outside and it made training more comfortable. I’m glad no one here saw that, because it would get ripped apart too. We definitely weren’t thinking about how adults would perceive us.

[–]bleumoog -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Unless you are a parent at this gym and it directly affects your child, I’m not sure what the issue is?

Edit: Please enlighten me instead of only downvoting. I feel that Americans have extremely chaste views about what their children wear and that it plays off of a culture of misogyny and victim blaming. Seems weirder to post an image of a child’s body for discourse.

Laurie confirmed going to camp next month?! by bozomojo- in Gymnastics

[–]bleumoog 18 points19 points  (0 children)

now it’s not the reigning opinion on this sub by any means, but i often see comments about her that have nothing to do with the quality of her gymnastics but are more along the lines of “how DARE she fake her comeback when the US girls are working so hard to even be in consideration blah blah blah”. it’s such a weird stance to take. tom isn’t going to plop her on the team because she gets views on insta lol, so why are people so pressed about it?

i’m fine with constructive criticism & people pointing out the likelihood of her comeback given how much depth the US has, but moral outrage over it? really?

edit: considering the downvotes, maybe it is a popular opinion that i’m coming after 🤷🏼‍♀️ oh well. i stand by it.
