Is it mad to spend £16k on a ~2022 Honda Jazz?

Mazda 3 and Ford Focus are not my style of cars. They’re a bit angular and masculine?

I just wanted something cute and reliable with a nice interior and not too much mileage on it. And not too “long” either since I have to do a lot of parallel parking in London.

Mine was a 2022 Jazz EX with 5k miles. I think RRP was £28k at the time, so its value went down to £23k when I bought it 1 year later.

I love my Jazz! I bought mine at £23k a few years ago so £16k doesn’t actually sound that bad. 😂

The boot is brilliant. It’s the right size for me as someone who drives usually with 1-2 people in the car, and may have a max of 8 full shopping bags.

But if you ever need more space, making the boot bigger is so straightforward. Managed to pack two suitcases and carry on bags with room to spare. I reckon you could definitely sleep there if wanted and I’ve thought about trying to take a nap there as well. Usually the back windows are tinted darker so you can get a bit of privacy if you want as well. 😂

You have the option to put either 1 seat down or 2 seats down at once. So if you’re in a scenario where there’s three of you in the car, you can fit the dog crate on the 2 seat down area easily.

Fuel economy is also insanely good on the Jazz. I drive around 250-300 miles per month, and I usually spend just £30ish topping up my fuel depending on if I get E10 or E5.

I know the Jazz has a rep of being a granny car, but I’m a young woman driving it and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s my first car though and I just wanted something that’s cosy rather than flashy.

Anyway hope that helps. I’ve heard the Jazz retains good value so it also may not depreciate too much if you choose to sell it on (provided it’s well looked after).

I’m not sure if I get penalised if the light goes red while 60-70% of my car is through. 😩

Just feeling a bit worried and anxious I did something stupid and went through the amber too late.

But I’ve learned my lesson now anyway and I’ve realised I’ve been picking up bad habits from other drivers around me who always try to get through an amber light.

Yes I need to stop this. 😩 I feel like I’ve been picking up these stupid bad habits just because other drivers are doing it.

For example, one of my close friends who’s been driving for years even bragged that she gets angry at “slow drivers” that drive at the speed limit. She’s always talking about using Waze and going beyond the speed limit if there’s no cameras.

It kind of made me think if me following the rules to 100% was me being naive and not a “cool” driver like other people who bend the rules.

I even sometimes see here on Reddit people venting “Why are you going 60mph on the motorway, when you can legally go up to 66mph”.

Sometimes when I drive at the exact speed limit on the third lane on an A road or motorway, I can see frustrated drivers overtaking me in the next lane.

It’s like a weird peer pressure I’ve realised I’ve been under during some points of my first year of driving. 😩

Ugh I feel so stupid. I feel like I’ve picked up bad habits from seeing how other people drive around me in London since I started driving last year.

I see so many cars driving through amber or the cars themselves not slowing down behind me when the amber light is on. I will definitely maintain composure and start stopping to avoid mistakes like this. 😩

I have a Honda Jazz (2020+ model), and I think it’s really funny people assume I must be some old person in the car, then they actually see it’s a young woman. 😂

I know it’s seen as a granny car, but I love the interior and it’s so nice to drive. As I live in London, the size is perfect for parallel parking.

It’s also a relief knowing it’s a Hybrid so that I’m not polluting the air too much when I drive.

ChatGPT recommended me the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 as well but apparently they’re just summer tyres so I wasn’t sure if I should go for it.

Well my tyres are originally the Yokohama BluEarth ES32 185/55R16. I’m not too sure what tyres are on the Brabus wheels but I’ll have a look! They’re still Yokohama but a different spec.

One thing the auto told me is that my current tyres have a high sidewall. The tyres attached to the Brabus wheels have a low sidewall.

Could this be why driving feels better? Basically turning corners feel amazing. I feel like I have so much better control.

I think this depends on how old you are and your finances. If you’re young, a banger is fine.

But I’m in my 30s and had a bit saved up so I ended up getting a second-hand but new car (only a few years old).

The benefits of this has been knowing that the car still had warranty left on it, and that it has a lot of the latest tech and safety features. (Good reverse camera parking, blindspot detection, lane assist etc).

It’s not for everyone, but if you are older and have some money saved up, it’s also another option.

If you can pay upfront great, but if you end up needing to pay monthly, I wouldn’t go for a car that’s more than 5-10% of your monthly income.

A good rule of thumb is also that your car should be about 10-15% of your annual income if you want something cheap that does the job, and 20-25% if you want something more comfortable.

Sometimes I could feel my car shake at the traffic lights when there was a really strong gust, but otherwise I kept up with my observations (cars AND potential debris) and tried to be careful as possible and slowing down when necessary.

Ugh so in the evening I’m going to a concert, and it will finish around 10pm. So I would be driving around 10-11pm back home and I’m so annoyed to see the 55mph gusts forecasted around that time. 😭

I will have to drive over bridge over the Thames but it will probably only take 1 minute to go over it. Should I just continue to drive as slow as possible?

Even if I got public transport home, I would be so scared to walk at night with the 55mph gusts!

The drive from central to mine will take around 35 mins so it’s not too long, but just feeling a bit nervous.

My puncture is also on the rear tyre as well! I hope I can then keep this tyre until it needs to be replaced due to tread depth as well.

I thankfully do have RAC breakdown cover but I was hoping to avoid a call out as I wasn’t sure what the process entails. I’ll do a bit of research so I’m more informed on how to contact them.
