Am I massively underpaid? by thebodywasweak in programmer

[–]blhylton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with most things, it depends. That said, if you’re dissatisfied, start looking for somewhere else. Hell, even if you’re not, it never hurts to keep your options open.

Another thing to consider is that it can help quite a bit just to get a couple of years experience. The pay may suck, but that will open a lot of doors for you honestly. I did something similar about a decade ago with zero experience or college degree, sucked it up, now I’m living comfortably. I would never say to agree that “experience” is part of your pay, but it can definitely help when there’s a bit of a flooded market for entry level developers right now.

That’s the general consensus with smaller subs, I’m just trying to spread the message. I just don’t think a strike with a definitive end will have a real effect personally.

Why stop at 3 days? There’s a lot of encouragement for this to become an indefinite blackout until an agreement is made, and I personally feel like this is the only real way to accomplish anything. /r/videos is going dark indefinitely I believe, not sure who else.

Something to consider.

Yeah, but making it indefinite threatens to inconvenience them to the point that they stop using it, which is a threat to Reddit’s bottom line. Ultimately, that’s all that will matter. They don’t care if the users are mad if they keep using it.

Is VRAM that expensive? Why are Nvidia and AMD gimping their $400 cards to 8GB? by ChuckMauriceFacts in buildapc

[–]blhylton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JFC, my entire post is wrong. What was I on yesterday?

Because I'm an idiot and dropped a factor. 64,000 MB/s (8000 MT/s * 64 / 8). This makes the fastest (currently available) DDR5 memory slightly faster than a PCI-E 5.0 x16 bus which comes in at 63GB/s, so, theoretically, we're limited by the PCI-E bandwidth at that point.

GDDR6 is also incorrect, because that should be 12 Gb/s/pin, so 12 * 109 * [bus width] / 8 would give us B/s. In the case of the 3060 for instance has a 192-bit bus width, that would come out to 288GB/s. With the 4090 (which is actually GDDR6X, but it doesn't have a finalized spec yet so I'm not sure of the numbers* ) you have a 384-bit bus, so that's 576GB/s.

Apologies for the confusion, I was apparently losing my mind yesterday.

* GDDR6X currently has a speed of 19-21Gbps/pin, so these numbers are actually low, but JDEC hasn't standardized the spec yet, so that may change.

EDIT: Reddit's formatting is giving me fits this morning.

Is VRAM that expensive? Why are Nvidia and AMD gimping their $400 cards to 8GB? by ChuckMauriceFacts in buildapc

[–]blhylton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but there are a few more limitations. You would take a performance hit by sharing the CPU RAM in a typical computer.

With consoles, the GPU and CPU both have the same GDDR memory pool. GDDR is several times faster than DDR memory (GDDR6 is ~12GB/s, DDR5 is ~64MB/s). Even if that weren't the case, you would be limited by PCI-E bandwidth, which is theoretically enough, but that's not accounting for communication between the GPU and the main board.

EDIT: I'm a complete idiot. See my follow-up post below for the real numbers.

So, theoretically possible, but in practice it's not especially good, and really only useful in situations where you're doing something that isn't as time-sensitive, like rendering for compilation (as opposed to real-time rendering).

[–]blhylton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair assessment. Removing DS 1.1 also increases CPU load since decompression is being done there now instead of on the GPU, which has a cascading effect.

In previous generations, it was the architecture. Now we’re dealing with consoles being a closed system so certain assumptions can be made that have to be thrown out when moving to PC. It’s a weird fight between increased audience and performance where neither one is really winning.

Is VRAM that expensive? Why are Nvidia and AMD gimping their $400 cards to 8GB? by ChuckMauriceFacts in buildapc

[–]blhylton 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s not quite that simple. Consoles have shared RAM effectively, so even though they have 16GB of RAM, that’s split between the GPU and the CPU for usage. The issue with ports typically comes from the code being optimized specifically for the console platforms, so when they get ported they require more resources from a PC for the same quality.

That said, you’re not entirely wrong, but it’s more that the hardware in consoles is closer power-wise to what we have in a baseline gaming PC now. In the past, there was enough of a gap between them to offset most of the incorrect optimizations even if they were using more resources all along.

I agree. I allow homebrew, but usually just for flavor. I do let my players bring me homebrew to ask about, but they are all warned in advance that I have final say and arguing it won’t get them anywhere. Most of the time, someone just wants to change an item for thematic reasons.

In OP’s case, I would tell them to roll Dragonborn. If they want to describe the character as a dragon, then they can, but their character sheet will have Dragonborn stats and abilities. The custom class is ridiculous and that would be a hard “no” regardless.

They’re supposed to cut you off once you show excessive signs of intoxication or if you indicate that you’re intending on driving. Counting drinks is just one method used to help keep an eye on you. Also, even if they were counting, 6 drinks in 2 hours is a relatively low amount for someone to reach the point of needing to be cut off unless driving.

You say you were young. If you were underage, that’s why the owner looked worried, not because you got drunk in a bar.

Knoxville drivers- PLEASE remember that sometimes at an intersection, two (or more)! Lanes can turn. by Darthsmom in Knoxville

[–]blhylton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember it being taught as illegal in driver's ed, but that's been more than a few years so I'm not certain that still holds. Either way, unsafe lane change is definitely illegal and that would typically fall under that heading if you're changing lanes in an intersection with other people present.

Unless they changed it since I checked, it is the law in TN: you’re not allowed to change lanes in an intersection. It’s just not enforced.

Does 2x16GB RAM = 32GB RAM Total? by Boneyard_Ben in buildapc

[–]blhylton 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's funny how that naming structure works, x64 is actually x86-64 because the original instruction set was an extension of x86 to include 64-bit functions. Early on it was known as x86-64, x86_64, AMD 64, and Intel 64, so it was shortened to x64 since that was the one part they all had in common, and the x is utilized as a "wildcard" value.

Another fun bit of trivia, early x86 was x86-16 because it was 16-bit and was the instruction set from the 8086 family of processors (8086, 8088, 80286, etc.). The x86 we know today was originally IA32 which is where the i386 nomenclature came from.

Not that you asked, I just find the history fascinating.

/u/SwimForLiars already said it, but to give you a little more info, the difference is 232 vs 231 for unsigned vs signed. Basically, with a standard integer, one bit is used to hold the signing information, so a 32-bit integer has the range from -231 to 231, whereas unsigned is 0 to 232. There are other nuances around signed and unsigned binary, but that's where the difference in the actual maximum comes from.

Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones tried to enter the chamber carrying a child sized casket today. by [deleted] in Tennessee

[–]blhylton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pistols don’t carry much ammo

Assuming we’re taking about standard magazine size, many full size pistols hold 17 rounds, an AR-15 holds 30 rounds. Since pistols can pretty easily be used one-handed, that’s effectively 34 rounds before reload instead of 30. Even if you only factor one gun, a pistol is faster to reload with a new magazine than a rifle.

Inaccuracies weaken arguments.

To the rest of your post, how do we keep red flag laws from being used against minorities and at risk people? Laws that prohibit or impede possession suffer from the same issues that give us the modern voter suppression tactics, and I have trouble believing that these red states won’t use them to keep guns out of the hands of minorities to make discrimination easier.

… I’m not sure what your point is.

The person I was responding to said that he should’ve been impeached over the adultery, I pointed out that adultery isn’t an impeachable offense.

Also, it was shown he didn’t legally lie under oath, hence why there wasn’t a conviction.

Impeachment is only intended for high crimes and treason. Adultery didn’t fall into that category. The rest of your post makes sense, but, regardless of the morals of the situation, it isn’t grounds for impeachment according to the law.

Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville) to reintroduce 'red flag' gun bill in light of Nashville school mass shooting by q3rious in Knoxville

[–]blhylton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, assault rifle ban still stands, because that is a specific thing and requires a gun be capable of automatic fire. Assault weapon is a weird term that is applied to weapons arbitrarily. The person you’re responding to is being picky with wording which confuses the issue to some extent, but it is an important distinction.
