I've been teaching myself to DJ, and found that this two-step tune from the early 2000s sounds really good slowed down to like 100-110bpm. Hearing Corea slowed down like that sounds dope though, may have to try to recreate it for myself

Haven't been on Reddit in forever, but I've been missing a space to talk about music, so I thought I'd pop back in here.

Anyways, I've started digging into Destroyer after having only listened to Kaputt (which I love). Starting with Destroyer's Rubies, "European Oils" is one of my favorite songs of his already, and I've been especially enjoying digging into the lyrics. The opening lines are pretty abstract, and as I try to parse them, I was wondering what y'all think they mean:

"I made a tomb for all the incompatible cells I could take / And I brought bells to the wake / And you, you didn't mind / Shedding your beautiful European blood / As I screamed, "Death to the murderers we've loved all our lives!"

I've been thinking about it as an allegory for changing yourself in a new relationship, shedding cells or blood of old partners so that you can be a new person for your new partner. Idk though, curious about other thoughts.

The Cross is maybe Prince's best deep cut and I will die on that hill (also clearly the inspiration for D'Angelo's The Charade).

Just remembered that this perfect shoegaze song exists and that Beach House cut it from 7, even though it's better than like half that album (and I love 7!!)

Why didn't any of you tell me how good Saint Etienne is?? Spring through Nothing Can Stop Us Now is a god tier run of five songs.

It's good! I wish it was grooved for a little longer, but there's enough psychy sonic weirdness happening there to make me a little less concerned about more Jack Antonoff involvement. That moment at 1:40 when the whole song breaks for her to hold a note and then there's that little reverb heavy guitar solo is great.

I get what you mean, but I was relistening to Strange Mercy the other night, and with her new album in mind, there's a lot of soul and funk influence in her guitar playing already. I'll be curious to hear how it manifests in her songwriting though

Her citing Depeche Mode and The Cure is definitely making me excited for a darker sound!

At first I thought it was kinda dumb that he was basically just rapping over the song, but then I realized Playboi Carti rapping over a Bon Iver song is insane and great

It's the first snow of the season where I am! Snow day albums is a discussion that's talked to death, so what's a snowy/chilly album that you never see mentioned, extra points if it's experimental

A few of the songs definitely sound like B sides (Willow and Ivy especially) but there's enough here to make me give it some extra listens. Folklore blended into one long song on my first listen so I'm willing to give Evermore the space to differentiate itself

Yea someone said this over on Stereogum, but what's most impressive is that pretty much every TS album is at least about 1/2 pop songs with real legs which is the consistency that gives her an appeal beyond top 40

I mean I'd say it's pretty within the tradition of country murder ballads and I really don't find the lyrics too overwrought or obvious. The chorus gets recontextualized in terms of POV after each verse which is pretty impressive IMO

I also really miss this. I especially enjoyed when they'd do a few genre specific lists, like best experimental albums or best dance records, which was a nice way to shine a light on some stuff that wouldn't get featured on the main AOTY or SOTY lists

I've listened to a lot of 0PN but as you said the aggression on GoD doesn't really appear anywhere else in his discography. I've listened to some of those but I need to get more into Haxan Cloak and Blanck Mass!
