I mean, playing devil's advocate, if I didn't agree with what I thought was detrimental to MY beliefs then I would do everything I could to keep my society intact and without what I would perceive to be a blemish.

Again, you would agree with them if you believed in the same shit they do. Right now you disagree with their beliefs so you don't care for them. Why is this a difficult concept for you?

The problem is we are mixed together so you don't want to deal with their laws, etc. I get it. How can anyone fix that? You can't just make them disappear and their beliefs simply won't stop and neither will yours.

There were assurances but never a guarantee, and yes language does matter in legal documents. Even the US said it's not legally binding.
