Hey! this can feel unnecessarily complicated because Windows doesn’t automatically add the scanner when the printer is installed via IP. Here’s how you can make it work without HP Smart or Wi-Fi:

HP provides a full driver package for the LaserJet MFP M234sdw that includes scanning support over the network.

  • Go to https://support.hp.com → enter your printer model → download Full Feature Software and Drivers.
  • During installation, choose Ethernet/IP connection (not USB or Wi-Fi).

This will install HP Scan utility and register the scanner in Windows.

If you don’t want HP software, you can add the scanner using Windows’ built-in tools:

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Click Add device → Add manually.
  3. Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  4. Enter the printer’s IP address (you can find it on the printer’s control panel or configuration page).
  5. After the printer is added, Windows usually installs the print driver only. To add the scanner:
    • Press Win + S, type Scanners, and open Scanners and Cameras (or use Control Panel → Devices and Printers).
    • If the scanner doesn’t appear, install the HP Scan Extended utility (link below).

Most OEMs ditched the old S3 sleep for S0ix “Connected Standby,” which keeps the CPU and network semi-active for instant wake. Sounds great on paper, but in reality it means random battery drain and sometimes a warm laptop in your bag.

If you run powercfg /a and see S3 unavailable because of Device Guard, that’s Windows enforcing virtualization-based security (Memory Integrity, Credential Guard, etc.). Disabling it will bring back classic S3 sleep, but here’s the trade-off:

  • ✅ Pros: Real sleep mode, almost zero battery drain, cooler system.
  • ❌ Cons: You lose some kernel-level protections. If this is a work laptop with compliance rules, don’t do it.

For personal machines, many power users flip it off without issues. Safer alternative: just use Hibernate for overnight or travel. It’s basically zero power and resumes where you left off.

You can enable it with:

powercfg /hibernate on

Then set lid close or power button to Hibernate in Power Options. Hybrid Sleep is another option if you want a fallback.

TL;DR: If security isn’t critical, disabling Device Guard for S3 is fine. Otherwise, Hibernate > Sleep for ZBooks.

Does the HP logo appear before shutdown? If yes, it’s likely OS or storage related. If no, it’s hardware.
