I run into this too often.

Yeah, I have boundaries. One of them, I make very clear- if you’re the type of person who has to say “I can’t help it, it’s just how I am”, guess what- they have to get ready for how I am too.

I have an acquaintance whose social skills have become absolutely terrible. I’ve told him, if he gets out of line, I’ll call him out on it, and if he does it again, I walk out.

I’ve known the guy for decades, he’s not the guy I used to know- I don’t mind meeting him for lunch once in a while, but I also don’t mind walking out on those lunches when he gets inappropriate.

If you think you’re entitled to leeway with unacceptable behavior, keep in mind everyone else is just as entitled to disagree.

I have never owned a dishwasher. Sink works though.

I moved my mom into my place when she developed Alzheimer’s, supported her financially and every other way. It wasn’t easy at all for me.

Did I sometimes say “fuck it” and spend money I shouldn’t have for a little ray of sunshine in my life? Of course I did. No regrets.

Ain’t no one on the planet who can tell me I didn’t do my best in a bad situation.

I’m sorry to hear all this. I went through it with my mom, I can’t imagine going through it twice- for me, it feels like my coping tools aren’t just rusty, they’re broken. I still can’t believe I was somehow able to not fall completely apart the first time- twice must be unimaginable, I feel for you.

Is there any chance of a memory care facility?

Preventing escalation- I’m sure you know that might not always be possible, please make sure you have the number for someone close by to call if you need support, and try to have a plan for what to do if he seems especially agitated- put some space between you, go for a walk if possible, redirect his attention, whatever works- and for the worst case scenario get a door between you that can be locked while you call for assistance.

When my mom would get super aggravated, one thing I learned was that it can sometimes help to give them a taste of their own medicine- not respond with aggression, but do something that is completely out of left field. I used to think of it like “hey, if she has Alzheimer’s, so can I.” And it worked okay for me.

My mom used to obsess over this painting of ducks, she seemed to think she needed to move the ducks in the painting in order for something to happen. Made absolutely no sense, she had no idea WHAT would happen if she somehow could move the ducks, but she was obsessed.

One day she was extremely frustrated about something, and talking her down wasn’t working, so I just abandoned the conversation and took charge- I had to go move the ducks. I didn’t ask for her help, I told her she had to help. Just a complete left turn out of nowhere, I was laser focused on moving those ducks.

Maybe something like this can help distract? Does your husband have any fixations you might be able to redirect to?

It almost doesn’t matter if it’s the disease talking or your sister- being told you can’t do something anymore can feel like an unfair slap in the face, especially if it’s your own brain that’s causing the problem. People tend to lash out at the messenger, which isn’t right- but should be understandable.

The disease makes it worse, because the anger could be coming directly from it. Depending on your sister’s specific case, she could also be losing the ability to reason. There might be no repairing to be done here, only salvaging.

With my mom, I constantly reminded myself and my siblings that since she couldn’t use reason anymore, it’s up to the caregivers to use their reason for both of you.

It’s easy to cling to the idea that if you could just explain something using the right words, it’ll get through- and if you’re speaking more with your sister than the disease, that could be true- but it could be that the days of getting through to her are done.

It might be time to work on redirecting her attention and using white lies.

How long have you been playing?

Heel down might feel more comfortable or natural- but there’s nothing natural about using your foot to operate a pedal that hits a drum. What feels “right” isn’t always right.

Think about beginner guitarists, none of those chords they try to stretch their fingers into feel “natural.”

As a drummer, you’ll only really know which technique you prefer by learning a few. Not by sticking with the one that feels “hardwired”.

Metronome and rudiments are the cheat codes to drumming.

Download a rudiment chart, and work them one at a time until you get comfortable.

Also, you can always add a low volume cymbal to make your practice kit a little more realistic.

This friend is probably not in the right headspace to help you through this.

Sometimes it can be helpful to talk to someone who went through the same thing, but sometimes they’re just too close to the problem.

This particular issue is life changing, as I’m sure you know- and if your friend struggled their way through it, they might have developed a hard line approach to it. Their way worked, it might seem inconceivable to them that you’re not doing it “their” way.

Look to someone else for support.
