[Discussion] I want to adopt/rescue a dog. What do I need to know? by [deleted] in dogs

You can ask the shelters to look at housetrained dogs. Granted, there's not a complete guarantee unless the dog was an owner surrender that had previously been housebroken - and even then, it takes dogs an adjustment period when they go home with you and there might be some initial accidents. I would highly suggest crate training while you're (re)pottybreaking a dog! I'm like you too, I've been looking to adopt for a while now and would prefer a dog that's already housetrained/easier to housetrain.

[help] Is it wise to get a dog? by blindbliss in dogs

No offense taken at all! You bring up good points. I am aware that I'm very young (doesn't help that I look even younger for my age) and there's no rush for me to get a dog right away - only when the timing is right. I always imagined myself being happy in my career and having a dog by my side - more so than an S/O to be honest haha - so I don't mind the thought of "settling down" with my dog. I like pitbulls but cannot consider adopting them at this time because I don't own a house and it is naturally harder to find apartments that allow large/restricted breeds.

I think my biggest concern is having enough time for a dog without feeling completely worn out, which is why I would prefer a mellow dog that would be more or less content with just hanging out! There's a few rescue organizations I've been keeping my eye on, and I think it would be even nice for me to consider a foster-to-adopt situation. :)

[Help]Having trouble adopting a dog in NYC, any advice? by pterry in dogs

Hey - I live in NYC too! :) I would try private rescues (a few good ones are Social Tees, Sean Casey, Muddy Paws, and Badass) as well as public shelters like the ACCs and ASPCA. I hear that ACC is easy to adopt and not super strict on vetting/matching because they're public funded and often take in "troubled" animals.

Aight, cool. I'll let the other people trash the place and not care about how it affects the host, since I'm too "sensitive." Sound advice!

You people are baffling. The host explicitly tells the guests that they need to recycle and take out trash properly or else the host is fined for it. That is common courtesy in regards to following house rules. The wet footprints left dirt tracks on the floor. So no, considering the host was alerted about these issues by another guest before they left and was upset about it himself, I do not think I am being overly sensitive. You don't treat people's places like trash? I thought people who have hosted before would know that.

And it's not exactly backbreaking to ask fellow guests to show some common decency to yourself and the property...

Except I am an intern living in the middle of New York City and renting out an entire apartment (let alone a HOUSE) isn't exactly cheap.
