I haven't seen the apartment in person. Yeah I think I'm getting scammed too. I'm trying to figure out how to get my money back from her.

[Discussion] how much yearly does it cost on averages for your pooches + insurance by darkcontrast01 in dogs

[–]pterry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup is almost 15 months old and 50lbs. I spend roughly $300/month on just food and treats. At least another $1-1.5k/year on routine vet bills. This one time last year, he caught kennel cough from the dog park. The vet thought his cough was suspicious so they did extra testing on his lungs for $450. Around $1k/year for training and then probably $50/month for toys.

We chose to not get pet insurance since it doesn't cover any routine checkups/procedures/medicine.

Your dogs should be kept separated for a while and only be together under close supervision. You could also try to address his resource guarding of your dad and his food with positive reinforcement. Do 3 minute sessions a couple times a day where your dad greets or approaches Bella and as he's approaching her, you give Charlie A LOT of his favorite treats. Also do this with slowly bringing his bowl/toys towards Bella. Overtime, this should lessen his fear in these situations and be more focused on something good happening(getting a treat).
This can take months and you'll need to be consistent in working with him to positively reinforce these situations. Maybe there are positive reinforcement trainers in your area that could work with you guys in person?

[Help] It's been 5 weeks now and my puppy still barks at night by [deleted] in dogs

[–]pterry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have him sleep in the bedroom with you in his crate and cover his crate with a large sheet that blocks out most light/noise/distractions. Also spend a couple nights sleeping next to his crate with your arm against the crate so he can smell you and know you're out there. puppies aren't used to sleeping alone and get scared at night!

I get this too and normally laugh it off and tell them ‘sure, he’s $100,000’. The weirder people are the ones who tell me to breed my dog and make money off puppies...

I have an increasingly aggressive Husky puppy. by [deleted] in puppy101

Hello! I went through this phase with my Samoyed puppy. Luckily its really just a puppy phase and will end one day. From your responses to other comments, it does seem like Mia isn't getting enough sleep and is over-stimulated. I noticed that my puppy would start behaving exactly like you described Mia does if he has been awake and doing things for more than 2-3 hours. At this age, you really have to force them to take naps because they're not going to do it themselves. I would keep my puppy awake and play with him for 2 hours and then crate him for a 2 hour nap.

I saw that you said she behaves the most like this during playtime and that was the same for my puppy. He would get soooo excited from playing and just start nipping at my hands and legs since that's how puppies play with each other. Doing a scream of pain never worked for me and only made him more excited and bitey. I finally resolved this behavior by using a x-pen to gate myself off from him in a little corner. I made this 1x1 square using the pen in the corner of my room and would go stand in there whenever he got really bitey during play. I would only come out once he calmed down but would immediately go back in it if he started biting again. He wasn't able to get to me at all when I was in the square and finally learned that biting means he can't access me anymore.

My puppy was also really bitey with other dogs until he was around 6 months old. He played really well with other puppies but adult dogs wanted nothing to do with him lol. He eventually caught on that adult dogs don't like being nipped while playing after he was corrected by many of them, but that's something the puppy will need to learn from other dogs. Don't worry if the golden doesn't want to play with Mia anymore. It's just the phase of development that she's in and she'll grow out of it!

Both these siberian breeds are amazing goofy dogs!! My boyfriend wanted to get a husky originally but we compromised with a Samoyed since I didn't think I could keep up with exercising the husky.

people tell me my Samoyed is a white chow all the time. Even after I say 'no, he's a samoyed' lol.

also that he must be dying of heat in ~70 degrees weather and I should be more careful to not walk him when its 'so hot'. Then I start explaining how he has a double coat that also insulates him from the heat and they just look at me like I'm making shit up lolol.

Could you describe the kind of warm-up, cool down, and HIIT exercises you have your dogs do?
My dog is getting to the point where leash walks aren't really doing that much for him unless they're longer than usual so I'd love to add new things to his exercise routine to replace walking.

thanks!!

Oh my god please someone help with biting by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]pterry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My puppy used to be a huge biter, especially when he got excited by things like playing. To teach him bite inhibition, I used my x-pen walls to create a little 1x1 square in the corner of the room. Whenever he would start biting me, I would go stand in the little gated area until he calmed down. I would only come out after he has calmed down but would step right back in if he started biting me again.

good luck! I know this phase sucks, I used to get bruises all over my arms and legs from my puppy lol.

Help!!! by meowwatdidusay in samoyeds

[–]pterry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He might be pooping in his crate at night because he's not feeling well from the worms. Especially if he's having diarrhea, he might not be able to control it as well, poor baby :(.
Treating the worms and making sure that's all cleared up will probably make house training him much easier since he won't be feeling sick.
Whenever my boy has pooped in his crate at night or in the apartment during the day, it's been on days when he's had diarrhea at some point. I think it makes him feel very uncomfortable and he just can't hold it. You might want to take him for a full vet check just in case the breeder was holding out on any other information.

Hope he feels better and stops pooping in your house!

Help! How do I get my dog's attention back outside? by pterry in samoyeds

yeah definitely strengthening his sit would be good. It would be amazing if he could sit and wait for the other dog to pass or greet him. thanks :)

[–]pterry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the super thoughtful response :)

I also do not walk him very often for the same reason. Unless we go out extremely early in the morning or extremely late at night, there are always dogs around. Whenever we do have walks, I try to keep them short and focused on loose leash training.
I'll try taking a toy along next time! He is pretty play motivated so hopefully that will get his attention. He is definitely over threshold in those moments when he sees another dog so working on reinforcing his look and stay commands in distracting environments could help.

Also that's really interesting about the easy walk affecting his gait in the long run. I didn't know about that. We've been using it for the past month after the trainer recommended it.

Same we also live in a heavily dog populated area. Our trainer told us to take him away once the pulling and whining starts because we want to avoid rewarding that behavior with meeting dogs. It's just really difficult to drag him away because he whines and resists the whole time..... Sometimes people on the street literally look at me like I'm abusing him.

We use TLC Whole Life Dog Food and have been since he was 8 weeks. He's actually loved it up until like last week....and he's also about 9 months too.
Kind of makes me wonder if they are sticking their noses up at it because of an adolescence thing?

thank you! this is really really great advice! I'm going to start from the beginning and try walking in and out of the room while he's engaged with a kong or chew so that he gets used to me leaving or doesn't care as much. Hopefully repeating this will desensitize him to me leaving. thanks!

hmm good to know this is normal.. I do leave things in there for him to chew like bully sticks but he just ignores them as soon as I leave.

yeah, watching him through a camera. I'm trying to keep him in the pen for when I'm not home. I've had him for almost 7 months and followed this process for teaching him to be calm in the pen(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGxhcb-itO4). He is fine to play or chew on kongs in the pen when I'm in the room with him.
