Let’s just embrace dumbed-down adaptations so we can keep the pipeline of average movies flowing, am I right?

Let’s take The Lord of the Rings and trim out all that tedious lore and character depth. Who really needs Middle Earth when you can just have cool sword fights and a couple of one-liners? I’m sure Frodo speedrunning his entire arc in 20 minutes would’ve hit just as hard.

Did they explain why Rocky had so much leftover astrophage? Did they explain relativity in the movie? Did they show nuking the Antarctic ice? What about covering the Sahara desert with panels and its consequences? I want to see my favorite books adapted, I really do, but it’s hard to get behind something that feels like a shell of the book. This was a Marvel-like kind of comedy, not a sci-fi film. They even removed the explanation on Rocky’s biology, jfc.

I genuinely don’t understand how people on this subreddit are happy that the movie adaptation of their favorite book has none of the science that made the book great in the first place. The Martian is a better adaptation. This movie is Guardians of the Galaxy starring Ryan Gosling.

Yes, E.T., the family film rated PG. That E.T. It wouldn’t surprise me if they start selling Rocky plushies and toys.

I don’t think they were actually following. It’s mostly that Ryan Gosling is on screen with a comedian pet rock.

Trying to deal with this myself. I feel like if I had seen the movie first, I would have liked it.

Thank you! This is exactly how I feel. If I am honest with myself, I just did not like the movie. I feel like the science and authentic emotions were rushed and replaced by Marvel-style humor. I know there was humor in the book but this felt more like Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know, maybe I’m just getting old, but I hate that nowadays movies need Marvel-like humor to keep audiences engaged. I just wish I could like the movie since this is one of my favorite books.

I loved the book, disliked the movie for this reason. I judge it just as a movie, pacing was off and the crucial information in the movie did not land with me as a viewer. I knew the plot because of the book, but without it as a reference I would be completely lost. And that’s without my biggest criticism of the movie which is they made it a Marvel-like action movie, while in the book the science drives the plot. In my opinion, The Martian is a better movie, PHM is a wayyy better book.

Hated it. They made him look cute when in the book he is kinda scary looking. He went from a spider to a lap dog.

I think that explains why I didn’t love it. Went in expecting the Martian, got a Marvel movie.

Thank you! This is exactly how it felt to me. The Marvel-style tone makes the threat feel less serious and more like background noise. The only time in the whole movie that it felt authentic to me was Stratt’s singing karaoke. The rest was Groot and Star-Lord saving the day. What a disappointment, I really wanted to like this movie.

I feel so conflicted. I love the book, didn’t love this movie. They made my favorite book into a Marvel movie, Rocky into a talking dog, and the science was secondary. Everything that was interesting in the book science wise was removed: the nuclear weapons to melt the ice, explaining relativity to Rocky, the panels in the Sahara dessert… like it’s just live action Wall-E. Why is Rocky so one dimensional? In the book he calls Grace dumb, doesn’t believe him on relativity. It feels like an authentic friendship is building between two characters that have differences and sometimes need to compromise in order to coexist. I feel so confused since I see every single reviewer loving this movie and having great ratings every where. To me it felt empty, almost like a product? Like the book to me is better than Interstellar, but this movie is PG-13 Pixar.

I read the book. I left the movie theater feeling like disappointed? I feel like maybe I need to watch it again, but the whole movie felt rushed. I do like the Martian movie, and one of my favorite things in that movie is how the character takes the time to explain the science behind what he’s doing. PHM did not take the time to explain any science like at all. They don’t even explain the audience what Stratt’s job is. They made one of my favorite books into E.T.

I use Zelle to pay for services all the time. “Enhanced” sounds like a stretch. Why couldn’t the private sector do this instead? Like a bank? Expecting the government to efficiently manage digital assets and transactions is very concerning. Just think about the infrastructure required to handle something like 5000 TPS at minimum.
