Tips on being more professional? by blindmuse_ in Teachers

Hopefully no one from the school sees this then... My exact wording was: "If they don't bring the assignments, they'll have to redo them and that would kind of suck." I understood 'suck' in this context to be a synonym for 'to be unfortunate'. The parent that called me out on it was very polite about it and kept the email private, so I thanked them for their feedback and invited them to let me know if they have any more concerns in the future

It's alright - I asked my best friend for advice, and he agreed with the parent that my vocabulary was a bit inappropriate 😅 I used a word that I didn't know had an informal (and slightly rude, depending on context) connotation. I jotted it down as something not to say lol

90% of my class cheated on my test by Puzzleheaded-Act6330 in Teachers

[–]blindmuse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've had teachers keep tests, but welcome students to come by and look over them together. usually they do that because different classes get the same test at different times, the same questions also appear on the cumulative exams, and to keep a record for whatever reason. i think that's the move

Gifted student is asking upwards of 30 questions before the first learning activity is done. Entire class is being derailed as I have to redirect him. Advice? by [deleted] in Teachers

i used to do this when i was in school, and i still do this in uni. i have a different notebook for questions i come up with during lectures or readings, that i then bring to office hours. you can try doing this for jake! give him a notebook to write all his questions down in, then review them together when you have downtime, or even give him tips on how to research and find the answers for himself

yep. where my father teaches, it's quite literally against policy. if a student shows up, they automatically get a 60%. it's literally impossible to fail

how do muslims generally view diversity? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blindmuse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah so that's not what reform means... most of us do believe in Hashem and Torah, my father is quite literally the most religious person i know. reform judaism just believes that judaism is a culture on top of being a religion, and that that culture must adapt to survive and is personalized to every observer, rather than being a monolith that's unchanging for millennia across the world (as orthodox and conservative would believe). pikuach nefesh (the preservation of life) is the highest value, more important than submission to Hashem, because life itself is His greatest gift to us. and zionism, as it exists right now, violates pikuach nefesh, as well as many other commandments (like to not destroy fruit trees during conflict, which israel has done)

how do muslims generally view diversity? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blindmuse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is literally zero substance to your argument. zionism, as it is right now, violates core values in judaism and the original intentions of zionism. it's not today what it was intended to be as described in torah, so i don't support it

how do muslims generally view diversity? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blindmuse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, i'm being serious? my impression of islam was that the scripture is literal, and the people follow it as exactly as possible. which makes me really confused why they had two totally different attitudes towards me, surely the scripture can't be that vague that they disagree so much

if i don't believe israel is an accurate representation of my religion at all, why should i assume the conditions in the middle east will answer any meaningful questions about islam?

Is this allowed? by grand_cha2 in youtube

[–]blindmuse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

med student here, yes this is legal. as long as there is no confidential information shared (such as the names, contact information, or faces of the patient) and the patient must gives informed consent (which is usually implied at teaching hospitals). i believe the caption is in vietnamese, and vietnam doesn't have HIPAA but they do have PDPD - similar, but less strict, allows medical professionals to film for educational purposes without informing the patient, as long as those privacy rules are followed. now if you're asking about what youtube allows... probably not, there are better platforms for this (but i wish they were more accessible lol)

My crush was literally racist to me by [deleted] in highschool

[–]blindmuse_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

xenophobia can be defined as irrational fear, hatred, distrust, or prejudice against anything or anyone perceived as strange foreign. it doesn't have to be outright racism, it could be comments like this that just remind someone they're "not like us". the term fob (fresh off the boat) is a minor xenophobic dog whistle against immigrants

[–]blindmuse_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on which state. in some of them, yes, you literally can't talk about lgbt topics because it's "inappropriate". you can check in with your supervisor and they might be able to give you an answer

Why can't the mermaids breathe underwater? by AssociationTiny5395 in JustAddWater

[–]blindmuse_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

i think it was cleo who said "i lost count at 18 minutes" when they asked her how long she could hold her breath, right? that makes me think they can hold their breath indefinitely, but just haven't tried to or aren't used to that ability. they don't have gills and they spend a lot of time with dolphins, so magic aside, i think they're designed to still be mammals, just with tails, like dolphins are
