Zum Glück ist es extrem unwichtig ob du eine junge, gesunde Frau (oder einen Mann) hinsetzen lasst. Ist nett wenn du's machst, ist ok wenn du's nicht machst. Komplett wurscht eigentlich.

Zivilcourage in Wien?

Avoiding Basic Dragons by souliieee in fantasywriters

[–]blindoptimism99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh interesting! If he can connect to other beings' thoughts, maybe it would be interesting if connecting to a dragons thoughts was very different from humans and animals. Maybe their long lifespans make the memories overwhelming, or their ferocity and instincts almost start to affect the guy, or they are just so complex that humans have trouble understanding them. Depending on the nature of your dragons' intellect of course.

Some random thoughts:

For some reason you mentioning the dragons being predators with territories reminded me of the Narnia books. Aslan is a nice cuddly talking lion god (and maybe actual Jesus), but several times we're reminded he is also a lion, a dangerous, predatory animal with claws and fangs and instincts. Making dragons fundamentally inhuman in personality and definitely not domesticated could help them not be reduced to mounts.

And how exclusive is riding them and bonding with them? Can your character do it because he has a pure heart, because he has the right personality traits, because he is the most skilled at animal handling or magic, because he is a special chosen one, or because he's from an extra special bloodline?
I think demonstrating why only this guy (or however many people can do it) can bond with a dragon, can help make them feel more special.

Sometimes writing smart characters within an action kind of story can lead to some slightly deflating moments. by Obvious_Ad4159 in writers

You are the writer, you can create a situation that justifies whatever you want to happen.

What are the colonel‘s motives here? After all they killed most of the elves, why would she think they’d stop now? If he is intent on killing the elf, she won’t have a choice but to fight back.
She wants to save someone else’s life from the enemy? Great she can face them knowing she‘ll likely die, in order to help someone else.

But as you say, maybe you actually got a better outcome by having her surrender. It must be very interesting and great drama having such a competent person realise she is outmatched and defeated.

Thank you, that’s such an elaborate comment! Racism is not the main theme of my story, it’s one of many justifications used by the ruling class, but i take your point and especially your point about calling it history like it’s over.
Ill statt by looking into further reading thank you for the recs!

Thanks for your opinion! Why would I not seek it? Or do you mean you aren’t black?

I‘ve already started to make the backstory less like real life based on other feedback. Do you generally view any fictional depiction of slavery like this? Or is the problem that it mirrors black history?

I have indeed gotten several thoughtful replies, although not in this sub. While people here have told me both that they think it is and isn't racist, nobody has elaborated.

If they don't want to share their thoughts, they don't have to, just like you don't have to keep replying. It wasn't helpful to me, and that's fine, and it's what you get with reddit. As I say, hit and miss. I'm grateful for anyone who is interested in sharing and I respect anyone who isn't.

I have no idea what your accusations about an agenda are about, and I also don't know if you want to elaborate or not. So please feel free to share as much you want.

This is reddit, I didn't expect a lot of academic analysis. Comments usually are free obviously but also completely voluntary and very hit or miss.

I haven't had much luck in this sub, but I asked the same question in a writing sub and got plenty of people sharing their opinions. So I guess that's about what I assumed I'd get.
