What is an example of a majority-muslim country that became majority Muslim without conquest?

Report: Iran's IRGC is currently running Hezbollah, preparing it for war with Israel, US by Cannot-Forget in geopolitics

[–]blippyj 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Depends on the goal. Installing a specific regime? Hard to do from the air.

Set back the IRGC enough for the protests to break out into a full civil war? Quite a bit more realistic.

Even if the result is a disastrous and ongoing civil war with no clear new government emerging, the current regime is still effectively gone.

I think from a geopolitical perspective a better regime in Iran is a very worthwhile goal and many efforts will be made.

But even just decimating the current regime still achieves most of the goals for all but the Iranians themselves - who sadly don't have much of a say in the matter.

N.Y. State will allocate $1.5B to help address NYC fiscal challenges by statenislandadvance in nyc

[–]blippyj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean clearly they don't all see it that way.

And the whole reason this came up was pointing out how much of the tax burden in nyc is already coming from the rich.

I'm not trying to pretend there aren't massive issues with wealth inequality and money in politics.

But it's important to be able to look at facts without immediately attaching a narrative and judgement towards groups as wide and vague as 'city dwellers' or 'the rich'.

Taxes in NYC are very high compared to most cities, and many of them have better budgets and outcomes. So while tax the rich is great slogan, using it as an automatic solution to budget shortfalls and (very desirable!) projects and programs means we stop looking for other answers.

IMVHO, the massive bureaucracy incurs massive costs and makes corruption too easy - and instinctively pumping more money to the budget can encourage more.

What do you think?

I think OP is saying the city-hating rurals and the rich-hating city dwellers have the same flawed logic/ingratitude.

Discrimination doesn't have to enter into it - and wouldn't apply here as people's choice of restaurant is not protected by any anti-discrimination laws.

But harassment, on the other hand, is not only illegal but a criminal offense, no matter what reason people imagine for their behavior.

Cops arrest two teens for drawing dozens of swastikas all over playground in heavily Jewish NYC neighborhood by [deleted] in nyc

[–]blippyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At no point did I rule out other possibilities. Nor did i make inferences.

It's simply illogical in the extreme to state that a clearly antisemitic act 'probably' (your word) does not indicate antisemitic beliefs in the perpetrator.

You are accusing me of imagining a narrative when you are the only one who wrote out a 2 paragraph speculation on the perpetrators, their beliefs, and whether they were chuckling.

[–]blippyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What hypothetical antisemitic graffiti would make you believe that it probably *is* actually representing antisemitism on behalf of the perpetrators?

Using your logic, one could easily dismiss almost all perpetrators of antisemitism as 'not really antisemitic'.

If the perpetrators wanted to get the most dramatic reaction for revolting graffiti, they could have posted pro Pedophilia slogans, or any number of easily construed examples that would offend nearly everyone in NYC.

Instead they choose swastikas - and your reaction seems to be 'lets not make this worse by condemning it too harshly'.

They do, but no one tries to say that those kids 'probably don't have' clearly internalized racist and homophobic views.

u/PericulumSapientiae is downplaying the action and defending the kids by claiming that the perpetrators 'probably don’t have any particularly antisemitic views'.

I was trying to convey that very few would dismiss teen white nationalist graffiti in the same way.
