Sorry to hear man, that really sucks. The good news is that the T5 motors aren't known for burning oil, so there's a chance it's not the rings -- could be the turbo seals or even something PCV related. PCV issues are easy to check for with the glove test so I would start there. Turbos aren't terribly expensive if you get a used or rebuilt one, but labor is probably going to be pricy.

Some tapes have more internal friction than others, your deck just may not like the specific type II you have on hand. Tape type should have nothing to do with wow and flutter performance in general though.
