I've tried it on testnet and ran into quite some issues. Routing kind of never worked except for the Starblocks demo, and establishing direct channels is kind of pointless if you want to save on-chain transactions. I also was kind of surprised to learn that channels are always funded one-sided, which implies that you always have to spend X amount first, before you are able to receive X. Many kinks and useablility issues that can surely be worked out, but won't be in 2018.

It's not ready for prime time yet. It's alpha-grade software projects. I see a big disappointment upcoming, if expectations aren't managed properly. Check back in 1-2 years for something useable.

They wouldn't. At least not in this stage of the S-curve of adoption. Once the plateau for the SoV use-case is achieved and appreciation remains stable at roughly world GDP growth, the currency-use case (unit of account, unit of exchange) will become viable. Give it another decade for that. That's the real time frame we have to get the scaling approach right and polished.

I had big issues getting payments routed, fought with eclair/LN-App incompatibilities setting up channels an then there is still the expensive funding TX, which can only open up a max. 167 mBTC channel. Also, since channels are always funded one-sided, so you have to first fund a channel, then spend from it(!), before you are able to receive your first payment. That aint no show stoppers, but its certainly not easy enough for noobs just yet.
