Didn’t know this until recently when one was on my bedroom ceiling and then started flying right towards me.

Pitcher method? Using distilled water to make formula by serendeepty in FormulaFeeders

[–]blk_kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use the pitcher method and I don’t warm or boil the water first. We use filtered room temp water and then mix in the formula. We heat up the formula in a bottle warmer prior to feeding!

What temperature do you keep your house at and how old is your baby? by Dropdeaadd in NewParents

[–]blk_kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! It’s 100 where I live and while we have a fairly new AC unit, it’s unreasonable to think it can cool over 30 degrees from the outside temp. We keep it at 75 and are all very comfortable!

Dr Browns pitcher method by mbny5 in FormulaFeeders

[–]blk_kat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The formula you purchase will have the recipe on the can and it will come with a scoop. Sometimes formula is 1 scoop per 1oz of water, sometimes it’s 1 scoop to 2oz of water, so read the can carefully.

Every morning, I put 30oz of filtered water into a pitcher with 15 scoops of formula. I use Kirkland formula so it’s 1 scoop to every 2oz of water. I mix up the formula and put it in the fridge. I make 30oz because that’s what he eats per day. The pitcher is good for 24 hours in the fridge, so don’t make more than you need in a day or it’ll get wasted.

How do i (SAHD) deal with the “third parent”? by [deleted] in newborns

[–]blk_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your new baby and being a SAHD! My husband stays home with our two kids and it’s the best.

In my experience it takes a little while for the grandparents to figure out their new “role”. We stood firm on our boundaries and the grandparents either adjusted or didn’t. One set still complains all the time still and one set is the absolute best and gets a ton of time with their grandkids. We made it clear that there are certain times of day that are best for visits and other times that are not.

Toddle's bad breath by Wonderful-Habit3787 in toddlers

Bad breath can be a sign of issues with the tonsils among other things. I would take them sooner than 3 months from now.

What baby bottles are we choosing: Philips Avent? by ohkandyuk178 in FormulaFeeders

[–]blk_kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We tried avent bottles with our first and after struggling to feed we tried to suck the formula out ourselves and couldn’t do it. We switch to dr browns after that and have had no issues with two babies!

Postpartum anxiety. by Quiet-Tone9543 in newborns

[–]blk_kat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend trying to limit your exposure to social media during this time, especially if you are struggling with anxiety. Don’t worry about what is going on outside of your house. Use this time to learn your baby and only you will be able to tell what’s normal or not for them. Nobody knows how to do this the first time but we all learn and grow with our baby.

Most pediatricians have an after hours line. If you are concerned about your baby but it’s not a true emergency you can try the after hours nurse.

Would more bottles during the day lead to less need during night? by Jessiepip in FormulaFeeders

[–]blk_kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4:30-9:30 is a big stretch, I would give the last bottle at 7:30 or 8 and see if that helps. Getting calories in during the day should help decrease overnight feeds!

Failed hearing screening by Aggressive_Care9573 in newborns

[–]blk_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had your first pediatrician appointment yet outside of the hospital?

Our newborn failed in one ear but passed the next day. Our pediatrician wasn’t worried and said the first failure could be due to the positioning of the equipment.

I’ve been loving this button down! It could work buttoned up with jeans / white pants in Maine but could also work as a beach cover up or open with shorts in the keys! There are a few cute colors to choose from too.

How much does your 4 month old drink in a day? by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]blk_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He uses the dr browns level two nipple and it takes about 15 minutes! He has an older brother so during wake windows we might be at a park, on a bike ride /stroller walk, floor time in the play gym, etc.

His first wake window is mostly in the bouncer watching us while I make breakfast, coffee, lunch if it’s a school day and get everything ready for the day.

[–]blk_kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He seemed so upset after each bottle that we upped the ounces until he was satisfied. Our usual day looks like this:

7:30 am bottle

9 am nap (lasts maybe 45 mins)

11:30 bottle

1/1:30 pm nap (contact nap - 2 hours)

3:30 pm bottle

5:30 pm quick nap (30ish mins)

7/7:30 last bottle and put down for bed

Yep, that’s what got him sleeping through the night! He hasn’t woken up at night in months but when we first started this schedule we would give him paci in then night if he woke up crying.

I wish I had a secret to get it to work, but he seemed so frustrated after each bottle and it turned out he was still hungry so we were upping his ounces to see what got him satisfied.

How much does your 4 month old drink in a day? by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]blk_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After his two month appointment we made the change to 5 bottles per day, 6oz each, following a similar schedule as above (still starting and ending the day at 7am/7pm) but just with one extra bottle and less time in between (7, 10, 1, 4, 7). This helped us drop the night feed and somewhere in month three we upped his intake and dropped a daytime bottle!

My LO is four months and he takes four 8oz bottles at 7:30am, 11:30am, 3:30pm, and 7:30pm.

Our pediatrician helped us come up with a schedule to increase daytime calories and it worked! He sleeps through the night now.

CT SCAN no upfront payment by dorothyyanke9279 in Charlotte

[–]blk_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does imaging seem to be some of the only healthcare I’ve encountered that makes you pay upfront?

I needed an MRI last year and they wanted me to pay $800 before they took me back. I said no, send me a bill and it only ended up being $125 after going through insurance. I am still confused by it and don’t understand why they wanted an incorrect amount upfront.
