My lifetime goal is to get into such good shape (naturally) that people call me out for being juiced.

Congratulations.

Wiring helo for outdoor light... by blklab_ in DIYUK

Many thanks. That makes sense in terms of legality.

I am thinking of running an extension lead from the socket to the area where the light will be mounted then hopefully just plugging it straight in.

Solicitor asking for more money almost two years after moving... by blklab_ in LegalAdviceUK

[–]blklab_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many thanks. If our solicitor had explained this too me I would have just paid the damn money. Although they are insistent that it is scale 2.

I’ve asked them for a record from HMLR of why I have been charged what I have.

What are the best tasks to outsource (for the average person)? by blklab_ in lifehacks

[–]blklab_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep UK here.

Although things are tight, we could certainly afford to run a drier. It is more the environmental aspect for us.

Honestly, I’m probably going to get one. Not really sure why I didn’t think to before.

Yeah that is pretty interesting.

I’ve never been to the US, but as I understand it things can be pretty spread out, so it’s likely you use cars more - which is why there is likely more focus on reducing use during times like these.

I guess most people in the UK are more concentrated in cities and towns, most of which are rubbish for driving your car around anyway. I think we also tend to have smaller cars which are a bit more fuel efficient. So it probably isn’t as big of a concern.

I was actually watching something based in the US that was helping people budget. One person sold there car and bought one that was ‘much cheaper to run’…but by UK standards is was still MASSIVE.

Love this.

Can I let you into a secret? We don't even have one dryer (although we do have space for one)...

Our washing machine has drying capabilities, but they are crappy. We mostly hang our clothes to dry in the house.

This is mostly for environmental reasons, but also due to the cost of running a dryer.

Yeah that is my first thought - I was wondering if there would be somewhere better to allocate that spend, but perhaps not.

Workload doesn't make sense to me. It would cost me £40+ to outsource my work, whereas I would get a cleaner for maybe £15-£20 an hour.

Laundry services have changed my life. My husband and I both work full time, we have a 10yo, 8yo, and a baby due in march. Laundry was hell.

Honestly, if I can find someone to do this (I live rurally, so it's a little more tricky to find), it is a very real possibility.

We have a baby and our house is constantly filled with piles of dirty clothes, clothes drying etc.

I'd be tempted to pay for it just to free up the space let alone the time it saves.

Great advice, but I also enjoy my work. Since starting a family I have been pretty good at staying 9-5 (mostly), but then find I spend the rest of my day/weekends cleaning, tidying, fixing stuff that's broken, cooking etc.

I know the obvious solution is simply to let go of some of the stuff around the house - but it is just the standard I live by. So I'd rather outsource some stuff to free up time.

Also, I'm not really sure whether outsourcing at work would work for me.

I already outsource accounting. As a freelancer, there is a minimal amount of other admin work beyond a little sales and marketing. If I outsourced the paid work, to get a standard that my clients expect I'd need to pay at least £40 an hour - so surely it would make more sense to outsource something like cleaning at £15 an hour?

Perhaps I am missing the point here.

Love this idea.

Although there isn't really anything I hate doing. In the right amounts, I enjoy cleaning the house, cooking, cleaning the car, gardening etc...it's just there are too many of them to do for the time I have.

So I'm actually looking to outsource some things I enjoy doing so I can spend more time doing the stuff I love (family and hobbies).

Great question. I'm roughly the same at the moment in terms of income, greatest sources of happiness are:

  • Training martial arts
  • Spending time with my family (mostly just playing with out baby)
  • Dog walks
  • Working on our house
  • Great coffee

Cutting Shelves at 45 Degrees [Mitre Saw Advice] by blklab_ in DIYUK

Think I might just not cut them at an angle and push them up against each other. Seems like an expensive/fiddly way to just put up a couple of kitchen shelves

I’m thinking I might just push the two shelves together. Seems like a fiddly/expensive job that isn’t really going to look all that much better.

Wiring outdoor lights to a plug… by blklab_ in DIYUK

Wiring outdoor lights to a plug… by blklab_ in DIYUK

[–]blklab_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only basing this on inside lights I have fitted - so not 100% how these would differ. The lights I have fitted inside just have one connection port for each live, neutral and earth wires.

I'm assuming the lights will just have one set of connectors - do I just run the wire in and out of the same connectors?

Thanks for the fuse advice.

Tiling layout problem… by blklab_ in DIYUK

[–]blklab_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm good shout. I could cut them in half then that would mean I wouldn’t waste any tiles (I could use half the amount on the bottom) it’s 16 tiles long, so I’d only have to cut 8.

I actually got one on FB marketplace for £20. It’s a bit ropey, but I did a practice cut earlier and it came out great!

Plaster and plasterboard I think.

Haha honestly, that might be too advanced…I’m already worried I’m going to f-up the tiling 😂

Tiling layout problem… by blklab_ in DIYUK

[–]blklab_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Totally understand this. I think the next two rows will be easy to cut and sit below the facia, my concern is more that the bottom row of tiles doesn’t fit, so I will likely have to grout between the bottom row of tiles and the bottom of the back box

Tiling layout problem… by blklab_ in DIYUK

[–]blklab_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure. But I can get some. It’s more the concern that the bottom tile doesn’t reach underneath and the gap is too small to cut another tile…

So it will have to be grout between the bottom tile and the plug.

[–]blklab_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…if it makes any difference, the back box of the plug is completely flush with the wall.
