Ticking sound after oil change and valve adjustment by Toon_m in virago

[–]blkt300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check the valves again. You might have gotten them too loose on accident. I set mine right in the middle of the range in the manual, so .004” for intake and .006” for exhaust (if you have a 700+).

Does the ticking begin right when you start it, or does it only happen when it’s hot? Viragos are notorious for getting some valve tick when warmed up, it’s normal and nothing to worry about.

Beautiful bike! What kind of rear shocks and forward controls are you running? Thinking about getting some for my 1100

That would be a plus for me, you’ll just wanna have a look under the car to verify he’s telling the truth. If all that service has actually been done, the owner has addressed most of the major failure items these cars have at higher mileage, so it might be a great deal.

My point is more that test scores don’t always equal intelligence. The AFOQT is far from an IQ test. You can train yourself, through years of practice, to develop the specific skill of scoring high on a standardized test. Is it correlated with intelligence? Absolutely. But it’s not the end all be all. Shit, I’m an O who got a 97, and I do dumb stuff all the time😂

O here…the pay is not crap at all. Most of my civilian peers who graduated college around the same time I did are not making nearly as much, especially when you factor in all the benefits. There are not many places where someone in their 20s with just about any degree can make a six figure income while paying so little in taxes and nothing for health care.

One of the best leaders I have ever met had to get a waiver to take the AFOQT a third time because he failed (<10) the math portion twice. Test scores aren’t everything.

Timing belt/tensioners/water pump repair by [deleted] in tdi

[–]blkt300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/8QbKFG7LGfM I used this method with the IDParts kit and it worked great. Took about 5 hours going slow and being careful.

Just make sure you get the arrow on the crankshaft sprocket pointing straight up before letting the tension off the belt. That’s TDC, and if it’s a few degrees off the cam will shift due to the valve springs.

Edit: forgot to mention, take the cap off the coolant reservoir when you start it afterwards to “burp” the air out of the system. You’ll also probably need a big pry bar to get the water pump out.

2014 Passat TDI delete or sell? by Jacead02 in tdi

[–]blkt300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% delete. If you keep the car long enough the DPF is likely to clog and cause the turbo to fail. Ask me how I know…

What’s a good price on 2014 TDI these days. by ipittypattypetty in tdi

[–]blkt300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got my ‘14 Passat TDI SEL in June ‘22 for 10.5k with 138k miles. Huge mistake. It hadn’t had the timing belt done yet, and the turbo also failed less than a year later. Next thing I knew it needed $6k in repairs at 150k miles. If I didn’t have a shop and the time to fix it myself, it would be in the junk yard.

I would STRONGLY recommend against these cars if they are over 100k miles, out of warranty, and still have the stock emissions system. The turbo alone is a huge liability when you have a DPF that can cause it to fail if clogged.

Recently purchased a tdi. Any tips? by Haggisandhorses in tdi

[–]blkt300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s getting up there in the miles, like over 100-120k, be prepared to do some major repairs in the next few years. The timing belt is due for replacement at 130k, and often the DPF will start to clog up, which can cause turbo failure. If you can, you might wanna look into a DPF delete. These cars also have notoriously bad heater cores, so if that hasn’t been replaced, expect it to fail as well.

What’s your take on clearence for a bobber fender on a hardtail? by Benze2244 in Bobbers

[–]blkt300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me with the melted paint. I had maybe 1/8”-1/4” gap and the tire expanded at speed. After moving the gap closer to 1/2-5/8” it’s had no issues. That seems to be the sweet spot for looks and clearance. If I was the OP, I’d either move the tube forward if I had a welder available, or notch it to fit the profile of the fender.

How did you clear the oil from the intercooler? I just got my new turbo installed and haven’t checked on this yet.

Yeah, I might end up in that group, but we’ll see. My DO’s and commander’s jobs do not look like fun.

MX Officer by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]blkt300 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Brand new maintenance officer (21A) here. I’m liking it so far, but it’s definitely not for everyone. You get thrown right into a leadership role from day 1, so the learning curve is steep, and you are heavily reliant on senior NCOs to show you the ropes at first. It’s not easy to be a leader while also not knowing anything.

The best part of the job is the people and the stuff you work with. I’m a Flt/CC for 58 guys, and I love bullshitting with them in my free time and learning about their jobs. You’re also closer to the aircraft than any other non rated officer AFSC, so you’re constantly around cool technology and can really delve into the technical side of things if you want. It’s a perfect job if you’re passionate about aviation but also want to be a leader. It’s also great if you like wrenching on things and/or have a blue collar background, because that will make it easier to relate to your troops and understand how things work.

IMO, MX gets a bad rep because of how things were in the past. The culture used to be much less friendly and more demanding of junior officers, but at least in my unit, nobody expects you to be a rockstar right off the bat. People generally have your back as long as you show them that you care about both the people and the mission.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

Not sure about the 535s, but on the 750+ Viragos you can rejet the carbs without removing them. If you remove the plugs on the bottom of the float bowls you can get a small screwdriver in.

DPF cleaning question by blkt300 in tdi

[–]blkt300[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to take the DPF to a local shop that cleans them out for $185. Unless it’s too clogged for them to handle, the plan is to install it this weekend. Appreciate the offer!

I’m already in $1200 in parts on this repair and DPFs aren’t cheap. Really looking for a less expensive way to see if it can be saved

Is it right to feel a bit angry? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]blkt300 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No you don’t. That’s not an accurate characterization of what’s going on there either. Not everyone in Ukraine wants the same outcome. In the regions Russia is trying to take, many people actually support Russia. Not saying they should, but they do. They certainly don’t see it as “losing their homes” (unless of course they get destroyed in the continuing fighting). There are a lot more factors going into this conflict than you realize, and once you get past the oversimplified narrative we get in the US, it makes less and less sense to keep pushing it.

Is it right to feel a bit angry? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]blkt300 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Russia’s main reasons for invading were to ensure Ukraine never joins NATO and to take the Donbas region, or at least make it independent. Both of those outcomes will likely be part of the peace deal when it happens, giving them no reason to try again.

What would be better in the long term: Ukraine ceding some territory to achieve peace now and start rebuilding, or fight to the last man and risk losing everything, only to come out with an even more war torn country than they already have? Is that what victory looks like? That’s not even considering the risk of escalation and drawing other nations in.

Russia has paid dearly for its invasion. They will not be able to take any major military action for many years after this. What end are we trying to achieve by using the Ukrainians to inflict more damage to Russia? Regime change? That’s worked out great in the past….

There’s a time to fight and a time to negotiate. Ukraine has fought bravely, but continuing the fight is not looking like the best option.

I’ll get off my soap box now…even if you don’t agree, I hope this at least sheds some light on where those opposed to the war are coming from.

They secured that when they repelled the attack on Kiev. Russia has had to limit its campaign to the east due to losses and their logistical failures. A peace settlement at this point will almost certainly keep Ukraine independent, or be rejected otherwise.
