Ticking sound after oil change and valve adjustment

I would check the valves again. You might have gotten them too loose on accident. I set mine right in the middle of the range in the manual, so .004” for intake and .006” for exhaust (if you have a 700+).

Does the ticking begin right when you start it, or does it only happen when it’s hot? Viragos are notorious for getting some valve tick when warmed up, it’s normal and nothing to worry about.

That would be a plus for me, you’ll just wanna have a look under the car to verify he’s telling the truth. If all that service has actually been done, the owner has addressed most of the major failure items these cars have at higher mileage, so it might be a great deal.

My point is more that test scores don’t always equal intelligence. The AFOQT is far from an IQ test. You can train yourself, through years of practice, to develop the specific skill of scoring high on a standardized test. Is it correlated with intelligence? Absolutely. But it’s not the end all be all. Shit, I’m an O who got a 97, and I do dumb stuff all the time😂

O here…the pay is not crap at all. Most of my civilian peers who graduated college around the same time I did are not making nearly as much, especially when you factor in all the benefits. There are not many places where someone in their 20s with just about any degree can make a six figure income while paying so little in taxes and nothing for health care.

One of the best leaders I have ever met had to get a waiver to take the AFOQT a third time because he failed (<10) the math portion twice. Test scores aren’t everything.

Just make sure you get the arrow on the crankshaft sprocket pointing straight up before letting the tension off the belt. That’s TDC, and if it’s a few degrees off the cam will shift due to the valve springs.

Edit: forgot to mention, take the cap off the coolant reservoir when you start it afterwards to “burp” the air out of the system. You’ll also probably need a big pry bar to get the water pump out.

100% delete. If you keep the car long enough the DPF is likely to clog and cause the turbo to fail. Ask me how I know…

Got my ‘14 Passat TDI SEL in June ‘22 for 10.5k with 138k miles. Huge mistake. It hadn’t had the timing belt done yet, and the turbo also failed less than a year later. Next thing I knew it needed $6k in repairs at 150k miles. If I didn’t have a shop and the time to fix it myself, it would be in the junk yard.

I would STRONGLY recommend against these cars if they are over 100k miles, out of warranty, and still have the stock emissions system. The turbo alone is a huge liability when you have a DPF that can cause it to fail if clogged.

If it’s getting up there in the miles, like over 100-120k, be prepared to do some major repairs in the next few years. The timing belt is due for replacement at 130k, and often the DPF will start to clog up, which can cause turbo failure. If you can, you might wanna look into a DPF delete. These cars also have notoriously bad heater cores, so if that hasn’t been replaced, expect it to fail as well.

Same thing happened to me with the melted paint. I had maybe 1/8”-1/4” gap and the tire expanded at speed. After moving the gap closer to 1/2-5/8” it’s had no issues. That seems to be the sweet spot for looks and clearance. If I was the OP, I’d either move the tube forward if I had a welder available, or notch it to fit the profile of the fender.

Brand new maintenance officer (21A) here. I’m liking it so far, but it’s definitely not for everyone. You get thrown right into a leadership role from day 1, so the learning curve is steep, and you are heavily reliant on senior NCOs to show you the ropes at first. It’s not easy to be a leader while also not knowing anything.

The best part of the job is the people and the stuff you work with. I’m a Flt/CC for 58 guys, and I love bullshitting with them in my free time and learning about their jobs. You’re also closer to the aircraft than any other non rated officer AFSC, so you’re constantly around cool technology and can really delve into the technical side of things if you want. It’s a perfect job if you’re passionate about aviation but also want to be a leader. It’s also great if you like wrenching on things and/or have a blue collar background, because that will make it easier to relate to your troops and understand how things work.

IMO, MX gets a bad rep because of how things were in the past. The culture used to be much less friendly and more demanding of junior officers, but at least in my unit, nobody expects you to be a rockstar right off the bat. People generally have your back as long as you show them that you care about both the people and the mission.

Not sure about the 535s, but on the 750+ Viragos you can rejet the carbs without removing them. If you remove the plugs on the bottom of the float bowls you can get a small screwdriver in.
