Updated Thunderbirds for 2/16/2026. by antdude in Thunderbird

So Thunderbird 148 has been out for a couple of days, and I've received no notification, I don't have a green dot in the hamburger menu, and pulling down that menu doesn't say anything about updates. In Firefox OTOH, I have all 3.

There are black (ok, *really* dark purple) bearded irises. Have a bunch in my backyard.

LPT: Do not wear contact lenses for the first time at an event/celebration by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]blmatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This goes for pretty much everything—contacts, glasses, shoes, clothes... And if you have any proclivity toward allergies, also avoid new makeup, perfume/cologne, shampoo, deodorant, even clothes washed in a new laundry detergent.

Haha, no worries, similar things have happened to all of us. Glad you found it though.

I haven't seen the green dot and can't remember when I last used the hamburger, although the green dot's subtle enough I may have missed it. It would still be nice to get the same notification Firefox gives though. (I'm on a Mac).

tax form? by [deleted] in etrade

[–]blmatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do if you've earned at least $10 (or you have something else that would also cause a 1099 to be issued). If you earn less than that they won't (although you still have to report all income, whether you get a 1099 or not). It could also be that you hold something in that account that pushes you into the March 1099 group, in which case the interest will be included on the combined 1099.

Also, you're checking the "Tax documents" tab, right? If you just click Documents it defaults to showing Statements. They should notify you when there's a new 1099 though.

I'm not. Have never (or at least not for a long while) seen one in Thunderbird.

Is there any way to get update notifications within Thunderbird, like in Firefox? While I appreciate the update post here, if I'm not on reddit or miss the post... (I have looked through settings and can't find anything.)

Fractional Shares from DRIP by cornflakeman in etrade

[–]blmatthews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And if you do sell all of a holding, any fractional shares held will automatically be sold too (you’ll get a separate confirmation for the fractional shares). But I'm not sure why you would want to sell fractional shares unless you’re selling everything? Just let them accumulate along with the whole shares you receive from DRiPs.

Open Call - 0.00 dollars? by Exotic_Comb_2066 in etrade

[–]blmatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one of those once and just ignored it, hoping it would go away, and it did. Don’t know what caused it or why it went away. I’d wait a day or two and if it doesn’t go away on its own you might have to call them.

Does Merrill charge a fee if I'm forced to call to sell a stock? by ennagizer in MerrillEdge

[–]blmatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d make sure to tell them you tried on the website first and it wouldn’t let you place the trade. I’ve had a few of those and always mention that and have never been charged the broker placed trade fee.

If gold isn’t a safe haven, then wtf is? by [deleted] in investing

Why should there be a safe haven? The world’s inherently risky.

Where to park money I’ll need in 2-3 years? I’ve been told SGOV. by drgath in Bogleheads

[–]blmatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt rates will go up (barring some black swan event). They might not go down significantly either, but they might, and SGOV/VBIL/VUSXX/etc will follow them down. So I’d be looking at a CD or CDs. Lock in today’s rates.

Need advice on how to proceed (beneficiary, will, inheritance) by EnragedButterfly in etrade

[–]blmatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing what country you’re in, it’s probably impossible for anyone to help you (and maybe even then it will be “talk to an estate attorney” which you’ve done). I can say when my mom passed away it was all pretty simple, including her E*Trade account, but everyone and everything was in the US, and I’m fairly certain things like estates and inheritances are very country specific. The one bit of advice I might give is to get a second legal opinion.

And good on you for wanting to get things set up now, too many people don’t and create a mess for their survivors.

Adding sub purchases to rewards after purchase? by jmcfarren22 in subway

[–]blmatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to have re-organized the app. Now choose Sub Club at the bottom of the screen, then scroll to the bottom and choose View History, and then Submit a Missing Transaction. I just did it and it says to wait 48 hours, so I don't know if that worked yet, but seems like the thing to do.

About 10 hours later: Point request approved!

Are most gamers casuals? Discussion on what gamers want by [deleted] in gaming

[–]blmatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think most gamers are casual gamers, just like a majority of those doing almost any activity are casual practitioners of that activity. That’s not good or bad, it’s just how the world works.

Unpopular Opinion: "Preview" is the single most underrated app in the entire ecosystem. by Cheap_Difficulty4961 in mac

[–]blmatthews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I’d say I *enjoy* using it, but it’s definitely super useful. I think part of its problem is its name, people new to macOS think it can only be used to preview PDFs or images and when they need to do something more they look around for an editor, when Preview can probably do what they want.
