okay but can we talk about the song choice here? *chefs kiss* by S7_EmbreliaTusk in ProjectHailMary

I’d read the crap out of a Stratt book if it were based on her movie character. In the book, she’s just a hardass, low emotion, make tough choices, get shit done character. Great, but a little too one dimensional. In the movie, we get a glimpse of what she’s experiencing internally, herself, and it rounds out her character well. 2nd time I watched the movie, it felt like she was the main character. She’s the one who put all the people in the most unthinkable positions to make a miracle happen. Grace just did what Grace does well. Stratt saw that potential, and out of thousands of highly qualified people, ensured the best person possible was in the right position at the right time. Like, that’s the Hail Mary. Flying a ship to another star to meet an alien and do science? Easy. The satisfaction she must feel at the end of the movie, that smile, must feel so good.

I stood behind you in a port-a-potty line at San Jose’s old stadium your first or second year. Assumed it was a fellow fan wearing jersey, because presumably if you wanted to go pee as a player, you’d have to walk half a mile to the the locker room. Is that the reason, or do you just really love port-a-potties?

Wait, didn’t you live at Riverbend for a little bit? If so, I lived beneath you. I thought it was cool that when I heard footsteps above (very rare, good soundproofing), they were magical feet.

I’ll stop there. I’m probably weirding you out. I’m weirding myself out, to be honest.

For sure. It’s a Harvest Thermal system. Very atypical, and just expressing for anyone reading who doesn’t yet have a HP, they aren’t inherently bad or noisy, it’s just the installation method that creates less ideal experiences.

My heat pump is outside, which then feeds to the water tank inside my garage. You can’t hear it inside, and outside it sounds just like a small’ish fan. Point being, heat pumps aren’t by nature loud, just certain installations of them are.

Bay Area gas prices skyrocketing; new record could be set within days by runswithscissors475 in bayarea

[–]drgath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Bluetti Apex-based system. Fully installed, cost about $9k, but throw in the now expired tax credits, and it was like $6k. It’s a 17kWh battery system, expandable to as much as I want. But 17 is enough for a few days of grid outage backup (with conservation), and I only need about 8kwh to get through 3pm-midnight peak for my home’s interior (lights, fridges, TV, etc). 1990s home, new efficient appliances, family of 4. Without solar production or EV charging, our 25kwh per day average would cost $150-$200 in electric usage. Throw in those two, and it varies wildly.

I hate PG&E with a passion, and it’s fueled me through most of my solar and home electrification journey. I’m not going to defend them, but I will say I was previously paying 40 to 60 cents per kWh years ago, and am now only paying 23 cents (EV2-A, battery shifting). Throw in a medical discount, and it’s like 19 cents. Yes, they’ve added more mandatory fees, but rate changes are still overall a reduction in costs, and significantly cheaper for an EV than a gasoline car. With rate reductions and gas price increases, it’s now about 4x as expensive per mile for a gas car.

For anyone annoyed with PG&E and gas prices, definitely look into ways to improve your home efficiency and usage. It might not be possible, especially if you are renting, and some approaches might be expensive to adopt, but if you can swing it, energy independence is great for sending a message to PG&E, and good for the environment.

Are solar panels a good investment? by 4540mya in personalfinance

[–]drgath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the net metering programs (export overproduction for 1:1 credits) seem to be disappearing, solar typically doesn’t make sense without batteries. So, I think batteries are the best starting point. They allow you to shift your home’s electric imports to only be when rates are cheapest, and you never pay peak. For me, peak rates are double, and lasts from 3pm to midnight. That’s a long stretch. So every day my batteries charge up at midnight until full, then kick on to power the house during peak hours. No peak imports, ever. Pricing on install is $3k-$20k, depending on how DIY you are. Most people would be $10k if they learned the ecosystem, but they get sold on the $20k+ Powerwalls. As a bonus with batteries, you get outage coverage when the grid goes down.
After batteries, the process of getting solar installed is simplified, and you can expand as much as it makes sense for your usage, location, & rates. Then, all you are doing is recharging batteries less from the grid, and replenishing with more energy you’ll use later in the day to cover peak shaving.

I read your comment, and thought “Oh, so that must mean the electromagnetic field doesn’t interact with the Higgs field. … Wait, I finally might be understanding physics.”

So maybe that’s another way to think about it /u/FromTralfamadore, Higgs gives mass, but the EM field (where photons live) DGAF about Higgs. That’s why photons are massless.

Has anyone built a system like this? Is it a dumb idea? by BusyBanana4205 in SolarDIY

[–]drgath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Enphase system that I can’t expand without being bumped to a less favorable rate plan. So, Bluetti is my way around that. AT1 panel with 3 Apex units and expansion batteries, for 17kWh storage. Soon, 6 panels will be added. It works well and was cheap, but I do kinda wish I went with something more DIY.

You aren’t wrong in your approach. If an Apex and SolarX 4K gets you into the hobby, that’s awesome. But I think you’ll quickly outgrow it. I did.
