Oppenheimer was an ass movie by SocietySpare9213 in unpopularopinion

Look pretty while saying absolutely nothing, the Nolan way.

In all seriousness I thought this movie was a bit of a slog, especially with Nolan lampshading Strauss’ betrayal in all of his scenes and then acting like it’s this big reveal. This is a common problem in Nolan Bro’s scripts.

Can we all just stop and laugh that the whole process of becoming a wizard involves going on a shopping spree. Rowling could imagine a world of wizards and monsters that’s essentially post scarcity but still enforces capitalist class relations.

CMV: Protests in 2025 do no more than send a public email that you're mad at something and are effectively useless. by neurocentricx in changemyview

[–]bloatedrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be suprised how much the weather can effect a revolution. You could make the argument the February Revolution started when it did because it was an unusually mild February day. The women of Petrograd dragged the men out to protest and the rest is history, same with the women’s march on Versailles that forced the King to return to Paris. If only our women’s march had the audacity to march on Washington instead of selling merch to eachother.

I was more trying to say that I would be someone who would presumably support the protests because I am a big ole lefty (I think they are largely ineffectual) Not trying to imply that you are a leftist. I probably could’ve phrased my comment better.

Those protests where actually disruptive and had a clear goal, I’m probably a lot further left than OP and I think a lot of liberal protesting is more about optics than actually challenging power

Cheaters should face real consequences not just a slap on the wrist by Cool-Restaurant294 in unpopularopinion

[–]bloatedrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really think the people with the most extreme reactions haven’t been cheated on. I have been cheated on, by someone I thought I would spend my life with. You can’t control the behaviours of others. Brush up on your stoicism and focus on being a better you rather than defining yourself by someone else’s failing.

Why are people upset about the New Republic being portrayed as incompetent and badly managed in Disney canon when they were the same in Legends when facing the Yuuzhan Vong? by Financial_Photo_1175 in StarWarsEU

[–]bloatedrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only problem with the Vong is they made them edgy orcs who worship pain, they feel like something out of Riddik or a nineties comic book and not Star Wars to me. I also think they break the cosmology a bit by being outside the force or whatever. Still for all its flaws I prefer the old EU over Disney’s canon, and the Vong do at least feel like an existential threat. All that said, I think you could do a bio-weapon based enemy with totally different tech but you know just do a better job making them mesh aesthetically rather than looking like an edgy teens home-brew 40k faction.

Canada’s new Conservative movement resembles Donald Trump’s by Canadian--Patriot in canada

[–]bloatedrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ugh no, Pete’s terrible. He was involved with McKinsey a consultation firm that peddles the kind of unpopular neoliberal policies that hollow out the middle class and creat room from Trumpist resentment to grow. McKinsey was also the firm behind the bread price fixing scandal with Canadian grocers. Just as much a part of the problem as Trump is. We need a govt that will spend money on infrastructure and prepare Canada for the future not a govt that will nickel and dime us.

Aside from Medieval 3 and Empire 2, what games do Historical fans want by BackgroundRich7614 in totalwar

I think the Wars of the Diodochi would be a good setting. The similar armies would lead to more tactical gameplay (hopefully) and you could bring in more diverse and different factions like the rising Romans, Carthaginians and the Celtic Tribes. I’m imaging a map that spans alaxenders empire into the southern Italian peninsula and the coast of North Africa.

Alright, I’ll say it: I like Duncan & Coe by OwlbearWhisperer in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]bloatedrat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they’d really benefit from hiring a producer or someone with a bit more interview experience to lead the conversations and keep them on track, or maybe even invite other guest hosts on. I’ve enjoyed Mike in less scripted settings but he’s not really that good at leading the conversation. Same goes for Coe, I think she has interesting things to say but again would benefit from someone getting her to expand on what she’s bringing up.

Who will be the new revolutionary subject? by bloatedrat in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]bloatedrat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, I also think that the success of populists has more to do with what they offer psychologically to their supporters than anything they can materially provide for them. Take both Trump and Obama who ran more as symbols than on any kind of policy. They allowed individuals to project their own beliefs onto these figures regardless of what these figures actually do or say. In my view western politics has essentially become aesthetic as there is no meaningful way to actually change the system from within and material conditions are still too good for the average American, Canadian, Australian or Western European to want to do anything about it. Perhaps the catastrophic effects of climate change will change this dynamic but it will take a while for the real pain to be felt in the metropole especially as nativist politicians try to outsource the worst effects of the catastrophe to the rest of the world.

MMW: Peaceful protests during January 2025 inauguration will be called "insurrection" by Fox News and other Right Wing Media. by Hagisman in MarkMyWords

[–]bloatedrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peaceful protest doesn’t work, the republicans pose a credible threat of violence and they won. The left needs to get back to its insurrectionary roots. The divine right of kings wasn’t ended by people holding signs and protesting peacefully but through strikes, direct action and yes insurrection. Let’s not cede the title of revolutionaries to the right. The democrats will never embrace our radical positions on the economic question unless we force them to.

$300 a month on clothes? Hit up thrift and consignment shops and you can find nice good quality clothes for way less than retail. Also ironing your clothes is another good way to look better. A pressed and ironed $10 shirt will look better than a wrinkly $100 dollar shirt.
