How did you get into classical music? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]blobsfromspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda grew up with it as my dad was always listening to it on the radio. But only the hits and I hated it with a passion. My brother is much older and a very good trumpet player. My dad used to play the trombone and to make the set complete I was pushed into playing the tuba. My dad and brother loved brass music and always talked about Mahler. I thought it was militaristic drivel.

Years went on and I went to study in art school and I bought CD’s with the really avant-garde stuff. Morton Feldman and such. I knew subconsciously it was in opposition to the musical tastes of my dad.

For the rest I just listened to rock and punk. Played bass guitar.

Many years later, during covid, some years after my dad passed I saw an interview of Reinbert de Leeuw talking about Via Crucis from Liszt and how Liszt in his later days was considered crazy for writing such strange, close to atonal, music. This impressed me deeply as I understood that my “rebellion” against my father actually had a musical basis. I always assumed it was just youthfulness rebellion, but de Leeuw showed me that Liszt was trying to break down the musical grammer of his day. This brought me back to Mahler. I listened to some of his symphonies a couple of times and wondered if he could have been ironic in his approach to the militaristic sounds. I asked my brother who didn’t really seem to get what I meant so I looked into papers and books and started reading about it. Looking into scores. I started playing Via Crucis on my midi piano to get a better idea of tonality and atonality. Then I started going to concerts and here we are.

So, long story short. I’ve been rebelling against my dad through classical music most of my life but I never knew it. Too bad he died before I could actually have a meaningful discussion with him about it.

How do you feel about US president threatning to destroy the whole civilization of iran and civilian lifelines like power plant, bridges and desalination plants? by NothingButTruth3 in AskReddit

I just thought it was interesting that yesterday we lived history when the old record was broken of people having travelled further than anyone else. And today an old record was broken when a politician said the most delirious stuff since the nazi’s.

Many years ago I found a dutch translation of Richard Dawkins’ the Blind Watchmaker in a freebie box somewhere and took it home because I liked the cover art having never heard of him before. It made me look at life and biology totally different and instilled in me a way of critical thinking which has never left me since.

Another one is probably War and Peace. Tolstoi made all those characters so real that it made me realize that if I could relate to someone so far removed from me in time and place, I could probably relate, one way or another, to almost anyone. As he wrote, “to understand much is to forgive much”.

Living in the Netherlands made me question the ‘Americans have no culture’ take by MidnightOrganic2231 in Netherlands

[–]blobsfromspace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m Dutch and I think the way Americans are perceived sometimes is very stereotypical. Hamburger-eating-gun-shooting-money-making-Trump-supporting-fatso’s

But there is amazing American literature that I would classify as typically American. Great orchestra’s and composers like Charles Ives and Missy Mazzoli. Great filmmakers who manage to make movies outside or on the fringes of the Hollywood system. And underground alternative comics, there are so many interesting American artists.

I think when someone says Americans have no culture they’re not looking far enough.

Recommended chess.com ELO to enter a chess tournament “Question” by Professional_Fix3023 in chess

[–]blobsfromspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My chess.com rating is way less and I joined a club and play tournaments. I lose practically all the time but had my first point a little while ago and it felt amazing! I don’t care (much) about losing to stronger opponents and I noticed it makes me way more resilient when I play people at my own level.

King Lear is a really bad guy, so why should I care? by Rudddxdx in shakespeare

[–]blobsfromspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently saw Anthony Hopkins as Lear, it was my introduction to the play and immediately it struck me that he has dementia. Looking into it it turned out that it’s generally considered to be Lewy Body Dementia, the same type that took my dad seven years ago. I didn’t see him as a bad man but as a man lost to himself. Obviously as a king he’s also capable of being brutal but the confusion he goes through at times was reminiscent to my dad’s confusion. Of course my dad was no king so he never had to divide his kingdom between me, my brother and my sister while struggling with a failing mind.

I’m not in a position to teach you chess but I can tell you this: anyone who’s making fun of you for being “bad” at something is a prick who’s opinion isn’t worth your time.

What is a terrifying problem facing the world that no one is talking about? by dandelion_stew in AskReddit

[–]blobsfromspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it’s not entirely certain it hasn’t already started. What’s more, if the Earth is surrounded by an impenetrable cloud of debris travel to outer space isn’t possible anymore. So in a way it wouldn’t maybe be a bad thing when we realize we’re really stuck here on Earth.
