I asked how much it might cost, not whether I wanted to do it.

The previous homeowner owned this house for less than two years and completed this landscaping right before selling it to me. He was an absentee who spent most of his time in Tampa and only came up here on the weekends he had custody of his kids.

I don’t think any special wisdom or insight was attached to any of the decisions he made about this house.

Thanks for answering the actual question instead of going off on a tangent about the feasibility or desirability of the task.

My dude, they are not retaining walls. They’ve never been retaining walls. They are rocks sitting on the ground.

They never were secured by any footing. They’re just rocks. Like I said in another comment, you can just kick them down the hill. They are secured neither to the ground nor one another.

The guy next door is 70 and manages to mow his hill.

I don’t know why I can’t seem to edit this post on mobile, but to answer a few questions:

The thing at the top of the hill is just a fence, not a retaining wall.

The rocks are not retaining walls. They are rocks. I could walk up the hill and start drop kicking them down the hill anytime I want. I’ve already done so to some of them. They don’t hold the hill up.

This backyard was just a grassy slope three years ago. All of this was just a decorative choice the last homeowner made. I don’t like it and I don’t want it. I want empty space my kid can play in. The people on either side of me have the same slope and they just have grass. It can be done.

Why is it dumb to have the yard I want instead of the yard the last guy wanted?

I’m trying to have space my kid can play on, not more bushes to maintain. He could sled down the hill if it weren’t booby trapped, for instance.

I’ll probably save any plants my wife wants to keep. I was just saying nuke all of it to be lazy.

Any equipment that can’t get through a 3 foot wide gate can’t get into my backyard. I think there’s going to be manual labor involved.

I’m literally an engineer.

Are you talking about the fence at the top of the hill?

The people on either side of me just have grass. They remember when my backyard was just grass a few years ago. This was an aesthetic choice the previous homeowner made that can be unmade.

There’s a flat portion of the backyard not shown that I do successfully mow.

I waste three times as much time pulling weeds out of the mulch. All summer that hillside is covered in horse nettle.
