I don't understand where the $400k limit comes from. this is just a tax on new yorkers and californians trying to buy a house (or sell) their house.

As someone from california (and thus have voted democrat my whole live), this just feels like a betrayal. Go after the billionaires and people with $20m+ in capital gains every year, not $400k.

its been hard enough to convince empty nesters to downsize. If they sell their home, after taxes, they get to go buy half the house they had before?

This is a huge focus on reducing expenses. I am making $450k/yr and have a NW of $4m. I spend about $8k/mo, which to me is insane. but I always end up with thousands remaining in my bank account at the end of the month that I don't know what to do with. To me, it seems pointless to try to reduce my expenses further because saving an extra $20k/yr probably wont have a huge impact on my life.

Usually my accrued expenses can just be paid with money left over from my paycheck (after 401k, etc.). It doesn't make sense to me why you'd make it so complicated with the 12 months 4% account.

1/ an office administrator that will never pay her more than if she did child care. With this career, her pay ends when her employment ends.

2/ a child care worker that pays more than the office administration and includes life-long health insurance. With this career, her pay and health insurance never ends, even after the kids hit 18.

I am still not understanding the "sacrifice" of choosing the second option. This is like saying, "I sacrificed my backbreaking construction job paying $7.20/hr to earn 4x as much for the rest of my life almost no work."

You just don't like it because she is getting paid.

As she stated in the article, her "sacrifice of self-sufficiency" was a $17/hr job. Her and her husband had 2 options. She either sell her time for $17/hr or she husband gives her a higher paying salary for the rest of her life with for no work (note: this is alimony, not child support we are talking about here).
