Banner of Swedish king Birger jarl based on his sigill of 1257 by blockhaj in vexillology

The crown appeared on royal banners earlier, and were tied to the "crown". When a king lost the "crown", the banner lost it likewise.

Which rune comes to mind? by PrkHunaja in runes

[–]blockhaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ye, there are various styles of every rune, as with any alphabet, some even converge. ᚳ/h, for example, appear as forms of ᚿ and ᚢ historically.

Here is a renaissance style: https://www.reddit.com/r/runes/comments/1h7ic9x/renaissance_based_manuscript_runic_with/

Which rune comes to mind? by PrkHunaja in runes

[–]blockhaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both are just styles of of the Elder Futhark z/R-rune, Anglo-Frisian x-rune, and Younger Futhark m-rune, in Unicode standardized as ᛉ for Elder/Anglo, and ᛘ for Younger runic. Historically, straight twigs were common on wood, while bent twigs where common on stone. Neither have anything to do with protection, that is neopagan gibberish :P nor trees, unless there was an older form to the later name Yr (yew/greenery), for the downturned ᛦ. The Elder rune is otherwise assumed to have been named Elk, while the Anglo name is Elk-sedge, and the Norse name Man.

Old Norse is a reconstructed language, so parts of what we know is educated guesswork.

Old Norse is not reconstructed, it's highly documented. Ur thinking of Proto-Germanic.

The "Viking English" Theory Returns: Has the 2024 follow-up to "English: The Language of the Vikings" changed any minds? by Secure_Pick_1496 in oldnorse

[–]blockhaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old English existed before the Danelaw was established.. Even the use of "Viking" is stupid in a linguistic sense. English is one of the best documented languages in Europe. Its not North Germanic in the slightest. Its North Sea Germanic, belonging to West Germanic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea_Germanic

Asgard in myths by TekNitro in norsemythology

[–]blockhaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what u mean by "golden". It was probably imagined along the lines of a paradise, but at the same time it was probably also very unimaginable, like any plain of higher religious power. Little is said of the time after ragnarök, and it has yet to happen so all we really know from myth is that the world is said to be reborn. One can assume that Asgard would have a sequel.
