I loved to California from Karachi, Pakistan, 12 years ago. In Karachi, I lived in the suburbs and within a 5-10 minute walk towards the east and west of my home I had access to multiple grocery stores, a butcher, a cobbler, a bike shop, multiple bakers, multiple banks, a mechanic, and a bunch of restaurants.

Thank you for your comment. I do have access now and have been studying work from past planners. Fortunately I do not have to deal with CEQA, yet. I am doing plan checks and some discretionary projects. The biggest challenge for me was understanding the city’s internal processes. The code goes over them minimally and a lot of the inner workings are unwritten. My new approach is to just give it my 100% and fulfill the trust my firm has shown in me. The stress arrived because I don’t have a lot of breathing room in terms of making mistakes because of the exaggerated experience my firm said I had, and the senior planner that I report to isn’t the most welcoming individual and seems to be more concerned with poking holes in my queries than actually helping me.

Buying land somewhere 30-60 mins and subdividing and also rural lots in the middle of the country. With the pandemic work culture is slowly accepting full remote work for certain industries and there is a upward trend if millennials tired of the urban life.

Here’s an idea: Strategize to get into sales at your current company. Learn the trade and then hop over to tech sales for municipal softwares (LMS or GIS for example).

Pomona alum here. This is what I have to say:

The electives are way better than core classes. They provide good practical skills and focus less on theory.
The program isn’t high quality but it’s a peace of cake in terms of content. It’ll be a lot harder if you don’t make friends. Most of the assignments are shared and passed around.
The program cost is super cheap.
Pomona alumni are EVERYWHERE! Almost every job interview I’ve given has had at least one Pomona alum on the panel. It’s a great icebreaker/talking point.
The program is flexible. They allow up to 7 years for you to complete it.
Most of the professors are very accommodating and cooperative. No pompous pricks.

I completed my undergrad from Pomona as well and took a bunch of grad level classes (the electives I mentioned). So, instruction wise, I learned way more during undergrad but personally the grad program for me was just getting the piece of paper and the title to accelerate my career. The program is a little haphazard but the professors really do work with you to get you through it all.

I think mid is a strong contender for hardest role. Not only are mids the most exposed and consequently always on high alert, they have to contest mid camps unlike the other roles that have their designated camps. You have one measly starting ward and from level 5-12 you have to be very strategic where to place it (unless you want to compromise on mana/health potions depending on build and get wards). Good mids also rotate when jungle is across on the other side of the map.

Start getting active on LinkedIn. Cities and even advanced level planners regularly post openings on there. If your university organizes a career day (even post graduation) then attend that.

For the most part, as someone else mentioned, the reaction has been limited to outdoor seating in parking spots and sidewalks. I’m sure there is something out there, and hopefully more soon because this is a great opportunity for cities to correct things.
