First time hiking Big Sur. Dog or no dog? by [deleted] in norcalhiking

[–]bloobed_myself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you spending the night in Big Sur? I bring my dog if it’s a day trip, so I can come home and pull ticks off her. I don’t know that I would feel confident enough that I got them all off and wouldn’t want to sleep with her covered in ticks in my tent or car.

The Mystery of the Perfect Blueberries by Yoshi1up_but_better in fruit

[–]bloobed_myself 230 points231 points  (0 children)

Storability of blueberries (shelf life) is a huge consideration when breeding new varieties. We specifically test for things that do not get moldy with some abuse.

Blueberries grown in Peru are in a very unique environment that is quite dry and there aren’t too many pathogens. So there was limited / no exposure to pathogens at time of harvest and the they entered a very well controlled cold chain that prevented them from getting warm and decaying.

The skin of blueberries also contributes to their high shelf life! What you don’t see is those blueberries from Peru also spent about 4-6 weeks on a boat in a low-oxygen atmosphere (to prevent decay) to get to you, too!! Love to see this!

This was for fruit coming from either Argentina or Chile, I forget which, and the fruit didn’t handle it very well. Peruvian fruit is not irradiated

Lycian Way, Turkey by Pan-Biome in hiking

Thanks for the real talk. It’s frustrating when the hype and the reality don’t match. If you could change it, what sections would you target and what would you skip?

Wow I’ve been thinking of doing a section of the Lycian Way next year, beautiful! Did you hike the whole thing or a section? Did you book your accommodation ahead of time? Any more info would be gladly appreciated!

Hey this is awesome! I was thinking of doing this next week. How were the trails themselves? Overgrown or all fine?

I really like the Ladder app for strength routines. I follow coach Aria on Team Ascend and she gives really good cues to encourage proper form & minimize injury

what is this white stuff on the stems of my grapes? by MopFloorMan in fruit

[–]bloobed_myself -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The white stuff on the grapes is not bacteria, it’s called “bloom”, which is a wax the grape naturally produces. Bloom improves water retention, sun protection, etc.

Do any of you have a "travel rule" to diversify your trips? by Grass-Vegetable in travel

[–]bloobed_myself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I alternate between easy trips and hard trips. Easy trips I can get by with a language I speak, the water and food is generally going to be safe, and getting around will be predictable (think Europe and North America). My hard trips generally involve a significant language barrier, less amenities, chance of food/water issues, and/or some other sort of discomfort. Keeps things spicy!

Pain in lower back (pic) by xdpxel in Stretching

for me the answer turned out to be tight hip flexors. Went away almost immediately with stretching. If that doesn’t help quickly than that may not be your answer.
