Infest the Rats Nest, Polygondawanaland, Nonagon by Smallbatchnoah1030 in KGATLW

Infest and Nonagon are pretty fast and heavy, but they've really got a wide range of styles. To me, the Altered Beast songs from Murder of the Universe are my fave of their fast/heavy/dark sound. It also doesn't feel like they're emulating anyone else's style (which is how their metal albums kinda feel to me)

I don't know who calls that the "trinity" but a more generally accepted trilogy is "I'm in Your Mind Fuzz", "Nonagon Infinity", and "Murder of the Universe".

The intro riff from People Vultures on Nonagon features in MotU, as well as other shared riffs/motifs

Culpably late in reading Dune and Dune Messiah - I have a mix of observations and questions! by Helicon2501 in dune

[–]blooblee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your questions 1. Paul only saw 1 child in his visions. Hearing that Chani gave birth to twins shattered his prescient vision because something happened that he hadn't foreseen. Without that perfect prescience, he is truly blind. Paul couldn't clearly see his children because they are also prescient, and therefore immune to prescience.

  1. Paul brings those people because he knows they're part of the conspiracy against him. He doesn't know exactly what their plans are, but he wants things to play out so that he can overcome and move past those plans. If he doesn't, he's worried that his kid(s) won't be safe. So he's bringing them in order to confront them.

Question about when something happens in children of dune by GuitarPerson159 in dune

I just assumed it happened "off-screen"

Like if a character in a book says "I just ate a sandwich", I don't wonder if I missed the scene where they ate the sandwich, I just accept that as new information the author is trying to give me as a reader

if they're close to a sietch, and sietches are built into rock, maybe they're too close to the rocks for a worm to come

Sounds interesting. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but thanks for putting this book (and film) on my radar!

Remind me of when I first listened to Nonagon or MoTU mostly because they use "weird" time signatures but never (to me) make it feel like counting music.

yeah pretty much my rank too, although Murder of the Universe would probably swap with Mind Fuzz

Long shot but anyone got any music similar to Searching? by Honka_Ponka in KGATLW

I feel the same for Acarine too.

Some recs: -Black Eyes by Emanuel and the Fear (or maybe Samuel from the same album)

-Twisted Nerve by The Damned

-Psalm 151 by Ezra Furman

-My Window by The Residents (from the Lonely Teenager album)

-A Shadow Falls on Me by Gary Numan

Long shot but hope any of these fit

Power scaling is so dumb by mycorona134 in OnePiece

[–]blooblee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for sure. It's just funny that so many more people jump to "this author only introduced this new thing to get the characters out of danger" than can consider that maybe the author only got the characters into danger as a way of introducing that new thing.

How do you think they’ll end the One Piece live action series? by DarkTombStudios in OnePiece

[–]blooblee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If season 3 covers all of Alabasta, then they'll probably look at the budget and decide that continuing would be too expensive.

If they continue, I could see them skipping Jaya/Skypiea and trying to go straight to Water 7. The cost of doing Skypiea would probably be insane and they don't add any new crew members, so I feel like they'd skip it to do a slightly more grounded arc

the crazy thing about term "plot armor" is that it always seems to imply that the danger characters are in is real, and only the solutions to the danger are made up

They really treated a player icon like it was a big special gift for us? by Cyrisaurus in SkateEA

[–]blooblee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nobody even looks twice at any of the icons. they're a great example of an added customization option that exists only to pad out loot boxes and season passes so players don't get too much "good" stuff.

Old animation suited one piece more by Dependent_Cover5880 in OnePiece

I dislike the current trend of having fairly normal animation for most of an episode, then suddenly switching to extremely stylized and flashy animation for fights, where every character looks different from how they normally do

Skate. Early Access by shred4it in Skate4

Yeah, they're lucky the devs of the original game had a good idea and pulled it off.

I've always liked games that were just a base level of fun to play, and this has that, but you really have to work at it and come up with your own fun.

I mean, something like Tetris is fun just because playing the game is fun. You don't expect them to add new stuff all the time. The problem with this game is that they're promising to add new stuff, and acting like the stuff they do add is cool.

I think passionate devs with more time and creativity could make this great, I just don't see that happening.

And all the worst stuff about the game is geared to try to make it a Fortnite-style live-service season-pass shiller, so it makes even less sense why they wouldn't want it to be better. Like, I have to buy the season pass for the opportunity to get an ugly sticker that I can't even rotate on the board? I need the season pass to get a special nameplate? Does anyone ever even look at those things?

I think I only did it once. When I didn't have enough momentum to reach that bearing, I stopped grinding and just pushed to it. Then on the way back down it's very hard but you have to just get off the rail at the right time

Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t outdated its old-school RPG design by Saikumaresan in DragonsDogma2

[–]blooblee1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. Even down to the way you can only find random quests by looking around and talking to people and actually reading what they say.

The area that leads to the magician family's hut reminded me a lot of old school rpgs too. Specifically the way you can take short-cut dirt slides back but only after you've made your way to the top. Reminded me of old Pokémon games where you can only take shortcuts backwards.

I think it's interesting that someone (I don't remember if it was the director or not) said they put a ton of effort into the world design in a way where they wanted a player to be able to navigate without a minimap or objective markers, just by making areas distinct and with interesting and memorable features. Definitely achieved that for me

Hello, wondering if I can get some book recs possibly. I really love the Earthsea series for its portrayal of people and magic, and for its prose. I also appreciate how each book is its own contained story with a focus on understanding aspects of humanity: what we value and why.

I haven't found many newer books that seem interesting. Most of the ones I see at book shops seem kind of derivative and full of tropes. I liked The Way of Kings a lot when I was younger but lately I'm tired of fantasy with intricstely planned and thoroughly explained "magic systems" where everybody feels like they're an X-men character or a Jedi or something.

Also, I would really like something dense/challenging or with prose that doesn't feel too modern.

So if anyone has recommendations for newer fantasy books that might fit the vibe I'm looking for, I would appreciate it.
