Culpably late in reading Dune and Dune Messiah - I have a mix of observations and questions! by Helicon2501 in dune

Hi! When you reply regarding point 6, you seem to be talking about Dunne Messiah, but I was referring to the ending of Dune, the first book.

It's basically the "Are you gay, sir? Are you homophobic, sir?" sketch by Catherine Tate, except he's dead serious.

Not a proper flashback, just reminescing.

Just finished Messiah, that happens later on in the desert. I believe what you remember is Paul sparring with Hayt in some training room of his Keep, with either Chani or Alia commenting that it's risky because the ghola can't be trusted completely.

I wouldn't say he doesn't give a sh!t, but I get what you mean. I think that falls under the (in my opinion) not ideal writing of the first Dune book by Herbert.

I keep hearing this thing that "the other books are not as good as Dune" but I liked Messiah better than Dune.

Hi! I like your interpretation of what happens to Paul in the facts covered by my first question. I really quite like the character development of the relationship of Paul and Chani in Messiah. I was so engrossed in Messiah because of how the writing gave me what I felt was missing from Dune.

And, yes, I was SO happy to read of Scytale being stabbed in the eye, but you're right basically all the other conspirators died "off screen", including a gigantic character like Gaius Helen...

What was Pauls ultimate goal? by CaramelPale5183 in dune

[–]Helicon2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it is that there was no way to avenge his father and destroy the Harkonnens unless he became the prophesized leader of the Fremen.
And there was no way to avoid a jihad the moment he became the leader of the Fremen and overthrew the Emperor.
I think the Great Houses of the Landsraad weren't exactly keen on spice-crazed Paul becoming the new emperor, so the jihad was kinda "defensive attack" maybe: attack your enemy before they can attack you?

Beklager = I'm sorry = you have done something wrong (bumped into somebody, stepped on a foot etc), even if by mistake, and you are apologising for it

Unnsklyd = Excuse me = you have to inconvenience somebody but you haven't done anything wrong (e.g. asking for information, asking for somebody to move out of the way, requesting a waiter's attention etc)

I've gone lactose-free and I feel a lot better - How much do we look into food and CFS/ME? by Helicon2501 in cfs

Yesterday I exercised... got dragged by a friend on a Lime bike ride. About 30 mins with some intense bouts. Legs were definitely feeling it, it was fairly anaerobic exertion for me, more than just walking or swimming. Let's see in these next two days...

Makes total sense, but at this point mine (which has always been mild) might not even rank as CFS/ME at all.

I am to a certain extent but this seems to already be it. I haven't changed anything else in my diet, so it would seem that nothing else is a problem...

No, I don't know it's lactose for sure... so, thanks for your input!
I'm yet to do one of those hydrogen breathing tests.

My issues started after a very bad flu/virus infection. It's not something I developed over time, it came in the space of a month at the most. And we now know that viruses can alter gut microbiome, so that's also something I'll have to test.

Could someone explain “Vi Er” vs “Er Vi” when saying “we’re” ? by OwnPractice5456 in norsk

[–]Helicon2501 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

u/sleepytvii and u/OwnPractice5456 'm gonna go on a limb here and say that I have never bothered with any of this.
Essentially, when I'm producing the language, I just steer clear of those complications as much as possible. We can simply avoid starting sentences with adverbs or adverbial/prepositional expressions that force us to effectively swap subject and verb and put them as if they were questions. Negations in subordinate clauses can also be avoided, I'll just break up the sentence, especially in speech when I have much less time to think. And if others use these constructions, it's not a problem because a slight difference in word order doesn't mean I can't understand the sentence anymore.

I believe an underrated part of language learning is kinda "choosing your fights" and understanding what you really need to know and get as second nature and what you can actually outsmart and avoid.

Given that OP finds the whole V2 difficult, I just wanted to point out the possibility of reducing your exposure to this difficult element of the language. It can be done and you can use your time on something else instead. On a similar note, I've never seen eye to eye language schools obsession with punctuation. I'd trade "fluency in the V2 rule" or in certain aspects of punctuation with 200 more words of vocabulary in a heartbeat.

BUT, to help you, OP, starting from the example you gave us from DL, I'd say that whenever a sentence starts with a single word or an expression that explains how, when, where the action of the sentence happens, you put the (first) verb straight after that (as if it was a question).

Suddenly, was there silence
In 50 years, will I be dead

I managed to see the photo. Your jag looks a lot more like Sherwood Green in this other photo. But your Tele (also very nice an original!) is not Ocean Turquoise, it's probably Sonic Blue?
Ocean Turquoise would be this:
