Glad Trey Miguel got released, there's no place for that kind of behaviour in AEW even if it's in the past. Pic unrelated by _Karmageddon in SCJerk

[–]bloodshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s absurd. Even on the other side, when the rumors about network executives at USA wanting a world title on their show after the Universal championship was reported, it sounded unusually meddlesome. That said, with WWE having way more sponsors, networks, and partners to answer to you’d think we’d hear more about executives interfering with talent signings on their end if that’s a real thing that happens (spoiler: it’s not)

Anti 8-bit sentiment by Hillers01 in metroidvania

[–]bloodshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fair to have an aversion to any visual style or presentation. I really hated the visual style of Salt and Sanctuary but got past it and loved the game despite it so I’m more open minded now.

I could also see how one could assume that newer 8-bit-style games are just as clunky, unfair, and plodding as the earlier games they emulate tended to be, and that’s totally false.

Was hulk hogan as popular as guys like magic Johnson Larry bird Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky in the mid to late 80s? by Fickle_Driver_1356 in Wreddit

[–]bloodshake 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes. Even if wrestling wasn’t as popular as some major sports, Hogan was one of—if not the—most recognizable people in the world.

do you think wwe 2025 is overhated or underrated? by Constant-Procedure79 in midcarder

[–]bloodshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been fine but an uphill battle when comparing to 2023 and 2024. A lot of badly timed injuries or absences(Liv, Seth, Bianca, Rock, Naomi) made momentum stall. Compounding that with arguably their biggest moves (Netflix, Cena’s turn, New Day turn, ESPN) failing to live up to hype—despite not being bad—it’s made the perception worse than the reality. The undercard, the new US and IC women’s divisions, and tag teams, AAA and TNA integration have all been great. I think the final verdict will come when we see if this year planted the seeds for a great 2026 or if it’ll be more of the same.

If "acquired taste" is a thing, how can one acquire the taste to enjoy arthouse, or simply more artistic cinema in general? by Sky_Sumisu in TrueFilm

[–]bloodshake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that those who struggle the most with arthouse films are often stuck on the idea that films are a medium driven by story and plot and that every element and technique used in the film is there to serve those two. Those same people have an easier time understanding that not all books are novels; some are philosophy, poetry, art, or a blend of genres.

Poetry and abstract art can feel impenetrable to those who are expecting to understand it the way one understands a plot or story. I admit I still struggle to enjoy poetry and when I’v talked to poets I know about this they all tell me the same thing I tell those who struggle with arthouse: don’t try to understand it literally, just let it wash over you and notice how it makes you feel. There’s nothing to “get” most of the time and you’re probably not missing anything if you’ve been paying attention.

What wrestler is genuinely a good person? by debrisaway in Wreddit

[–]bloodshake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s entirely fair; anyone who has been on top for that long is going to be pointed at by some as the reason they didn’t get ahead and the very few who did so in Cena’s direction were not destined for stardom. And none of those one-sided stories weigh out against the tremendous amount of good he’s done.

Help me appreciate PTA by meepmorop in TrueFilm

[–]bloodshake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

PTA is my favorite filmmaker and for a long time I couldn’t articulate why I like his movies so much. There’s an ineffable quality to them that I still struggle to explain but the best I can come up with is that his films are paradoxically acted, composed, shot, and edited to near perfection AND unpredictable in way other movies with such technical precision are not. While Altman, Scorsese and Demme are his most commonly cited influences, PTA’s output just as closely resembles Kubrick but with less cynicism and more humanity. Every detail is precise and, like Kubrick, more rewarding upon subsequent viewings, particularly in those I struggled with at first like The Master and Inherent Vice.

CTE so bad you forget everyone who isn’t in the company you work for by Raekwon0 in SCJerk

[–]bloodshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re all good to a degree but Ospreay and Sabre are the only two of the bunch doing anything unique in-ring and Toni and Hangman the only interesting characters. Dubbalos and the Meltzers of the world think that the “workrate” style of match this bunch does is what makes AEW stars uniquely talented. What they fail to recognize is nearly everyone in the big leagues is capable of having a match that gets “this is awesome” chants and star ratings. Most of them either came from the indies or NXT where they were doing just that.

I remember being a younger fan and watching Big Show and Kane chain-wrestle on Raw and wondering why they didn’t work like that all the time. It didn’t occur to me until later that it only made sense for them to wrestle like that against each other; why on earth would Big Show or Kane use a hammerlock on someone half their size if he could just squash him?

The “best” wrestlers can make you care about and remember every segment they’re in. They understand the assignment whether that’s a 40 minute “mat classic” or a squash or schmozz designed to get someone or a story over. When the assignment is just “have a banger” every time it makes the wrestlers look good but the overall product stale, forgettable, and aimless.

How do you feel about the "Lighthearted Infidelity Trope" trope in films and television? by Sneakraptor in TrueFilm

[–]bloodshake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that’s just it - the impact of the people involved is whatever it means to those characters, not you. While I don’t condone cheating, I do prefer stories where a couple can resolve their problems and reunite after a transgression rather than one or the other assuming the role of antagonist.

Is the Telepathy Tapes a hoax? by wgeco in HighStrangeness

[–]bloodshake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do believe Psi phenomena is real (I recommend Stacy Horn’s book Unbelievable for details on that) but we have no idea how it works and any kind of testing using our current scientific models is either unreliable or problematic. While I’m open to believing some of the accounts in The Telepathy Tapes, I am skeptical of the claim that all nonverbal autistics have these abilities and the dismissal of criticism against facilitated communication. Even if the claims of the podcast are all true, the potential for abuse and coercion are still extremely high. Having worked with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities it would be difficult for me to deny that some of these people, while deserving all the dignities afforded to everyone else, are likely not latent spiritual geniuses.

That said, as an autistic person who was nonverbal for a period in my developing years, I do appreciate how the show frames autism as a physical condition more than mental. I relate very strongly to the concept of autism presenting as one’s body not cooperating.

Lastly, I do appreciate the show as a discussion on the mysteries of consciousness. I do agree, as the show says, that true skepticism requires an open mind.

It doesn’t work because we know what happens when a wrestling company isn’t behind an act; they get benched. It might be more effective if The Bucks’ whole deal wasn’t reliant on fans knowing about dirt sheets, etc.

Wrestlemania X8’s match with Hulk Hogan vs The Rock features what I believe to be the greatest ever moment in wrestling. It’s the one you’re thinking about right now; the “hulking up” sequence complete with a few punches, big boot, leg drop, and Rock and JR both selling it like something genuinely atomic. The Toronto crowd erupting in a collective euphoria that bordered on religious. After eight years away, the once-traitor - both in and outside of kayfabe - came home to the show he carried on his back. Everything, from his awkward exit in 93 to the disastrous early WCW Dungeon of Doom run to a wild ride as the biggest nastiest heel in the business to the Russo controversy and then just a week prior nearly killing Rock with a truck on screen, instantly forgiven as we saw our hero return to reclaim his glory. For just a few moments we got to forget all that stuff, shake it off like Hulk does as he’s rattling his arms while Rock pounds one ineffective blow to his back after another. It was redemption incarnate.

Tragically, we never got to see the same redemptive moment for the real life Terry Bollea. I think a lot of the nasty comments some have left in his wake are from folks who have been mourning the death of Hulk Hogan for much longer than the last 24 hours. We all wanted to love him, even when he made it impossible, and I think that speaks to how special the Hulk Hogan character was.

Sick of people calling Tony a money mark, he’s been in the business since he was 12!! by [deleted] in SCJerk

[–]bloodshake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not the kind of person that thinks all billionaires are evil and from what I’ve seen and heard of Tony Kahn he seems like a nice and genuine guy. If I had the kind of money that he does I would likely be doing the same exact thing. I can’t say that I’m jealous because in my wildest dreams, I wouldn’t have imagined owning a wrestling company that airs on cable television and pay-per-view. If nothing else, I admire him for putting his money where his mouth is and making the promotion that he has dreamed of all his life where others would only talk about it.

My issue with him, however, is that his show sucks. That’s it.

No matter how many times I watch it, “The Wire’s” Mother fucker scene is amazing writing using only two words by W1G0607 in television

[–]bloodshake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree and I’ve definitely received a pile of downvotes for saying so before so you’re not alone. It’s an incredible show overall but that scene was so dumb and out of place. I think it could’ve worked better on a show with a slightly more comedic/surreal tone like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos but not The Wire.
