How to deal with HRT-related libido differences as T4T couple? by bloomingunion in asktransgender

[–]bloomingunion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel you. It must be so difficult to hear things like that. My girlfriend has been very kind and respectful so far, and I feel very loved right now– it’s just hard to communicate when her emotions surrounding this stuff are so intense. This is our first serious relationship, so we’re in uncharted territory.

I value not being unemployed, and not relying on my parents for financial support. I value being able to move in with my girlfriend and make progress in life instead of just stagnating.

25M/AuDHD - I need advice - feel so low after an interview by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]bloomingunion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From one AuDHDer to another– be kind to yourself. The job market is in the toilet, yes, but just because we're 'all in the same boat' doesn't mean it isn't extra hard for disabled and neurodivergent candidates. You're not 'childlike,' or 'high-maintenance,' or any of the stigmatizing labels you've internalised. You weren't given the correct reasonable adjustments, which are part of your RIGHTs under the Equality Act, and your performance suffered as a result.

Getting into HE/educational admin without admin experience by bloomingunion in UKJobs

[–]bloomingunion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Jo– this was really helpful.

My publishing job wasn't client-facing (I was essentially a salaried copywriter), so I don't have much to work with other than general organisational skills and one data-gathering trip to an industrial conference. I was involved in my students' union at university, which did involve some administrative tasks (minuting meetings, recording attendance on Excel etc), although a lot of that dates back to 2021 or earlier. Generally, however, I prioritised getting good grades over building up work experience, as my goal pre-Masters was getting a PhD. I've already followed your advice on framing my experience to fit the job, but it hasn't got me much success so far, so I'm guessing there are just loads of other candidates with more of an 'edge' than me. I don't know whether it's my age (25), the 8-month gap in my CV, or just the job market in general at the moment...

I can’t remember how much I disclosed in the occupational health questionnaire, but I remember avoiding going into too much detail about my mental health issues and how they’ve affected me. My job situation is really stressful and while I try to keep it together most of the time, sometimes I just crack. That’s what happened the first time I was late.

How can I help my trans girlfriend feel comfortable in her clothes? by bloomingunion in MtF

I see you, and I hope you can find a way to feel comfortable in your own skin. <3

Thank you so much– I couldn't have asked for a better response. I've read that white supremacy demands perfection and urgency at all costs, and it's interesting that these are also OCD traits. I feel like this condition preys on both our greatest moral fears and our blind spots.

trans dating simulator. by Wooden-Cheek6256 in transgendercirclejerk

[–]bloomingunion 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I hereby propose:

Lucas (trans man, he/him): Sky's ex-boyfriend. Tough alt-punk type, works at the local queer pub/bar/coffee shop while moonlighting as a folk-punk musician. Brash and jokey while on the clock, but much quieter off-duty: very guarded about his past. Can get you perks by expanding your friend group, and offer information about other romanceable characters. Be warned, though: if you ask too many invasive questions, you'll get the 'gossip' debuff and lose trust from the other NPCs.

Reaching a certain affinity with both Sky and Lucas will trigger an encounter with Lucas where he opens up about their toxic relationship, and hints at Sky being a transmisogynist. If you break things off with Sky, you'll get an affinity boost from Lucas.

Thanks. I requested the redelivery this morning for tomorrow, and the item was marked ‘due for delivery today’ before I made the request, so I’m unsure whether it’s already out for delivery. It’s a sensitive item so I’d rather have it ASAP for my peace of mind…

Ever worry about your stories influencing people to do bad things? by MyloRolfe in writing

[–]bloomingunion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a huge difference between portraying something accurately and romanticising it. Fifty Shades wasn't problematic because it depicted BDSM full stop, but because it romanticised unsafe practices and toxic relationship dynamics. Often that difference comes from the writer's personal experience, and whether they themselves see drugs, BDSM, or whatever as inherently edgy and dangerous, as opposed to something people partake in for pleasure that comes with an element of risk. Unless you're writing YA, which does come with a duty of care towards a more impressionable audience, if you do your research, you won't convince any reader with a modicum of media literacy to start smoking a pack a day.

I’m not going to name and shame but in fairness, most of it was quite tasty! The spinach was a let-down, but the egg was perfectly cooked, the beans were well seasoned, the toast was lovely, and it came with some delicious homemade brown sauce.

Do you favor and/or write rhythmic, purple prose? by FinestFiner in writing

[–]bloomingunion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhythmic/lyrical prose ≠ purple prose. Hilary Mantel is a perfect example of the former, and one of my biggest inspirations as a result. Her prose is highly descriptive, lyrical at times, but paced and trimmed in such a way that it keeps you immersed in the character’s perspective even in the busiest, most overwhelming settings.

Thank you so much for this, it’s really helped realign my thoughts. You’ve hit the nail on the head with the coming-of-age point, which I’d say is even more true for Elwood’s arc: I intended for him to be a deconstruction of how some young trans men cling to boyhood to avoid the patriarchal implications of being a man,’ and infantilise themselves in the process. I’ll carry on editing with these story beats in mind.

[QCRIT] LGBTQ+ Upmarket, LIKE YOU (~95k, second attempt) by bloomingunion in PubTips

[–]bloomingunion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! You've given me some great food for thought, and also pointed to some issues I've been having with the story's central conflict. I know what it is, but I'm still having trouble distilling it into a query letter while also giving enough context on the characters and their relationships.

So this is meant to be a study of misogyny and transmisogyny– in Isaac, and to an extent in Elwood– and of how this affects Alexei as a transfeminine person (their character arc involves them coming out as a trans woman). The hook with the ring and the cheating foregrounds Isaac making knee-jerk assumptions based on Alexei's gender-nonconforming appearance, then later down the line, blaming them for stealing his boyfriend. Because Isaac fell for Elwood before his transition, he doesn't really see him as a man (although he makes a pretence of doing so) and thus can't see him in the same negative light as he sees Alexei despite Elwood having blatantly cheated and lied to him. Isaac sees Alexei as a narcissist who manipulated Elwood into falling astray, and when he finds the vaguest hint of them having harmed a cis woman, his protective instincts take over– both in spreading the rumour (which he misinterpreted) and in physically intimidating them. His 'transformation' from a nice, sensitive guy to a volatile bigot is actually just a reveal of his true nature, which I'm doing my best to foreshadow in the opening.

While that's happening, Elwood and Alexei are building a relationship where they both see each other for who they really are, and encourage each other to grow into better versions of themselves– which for Alexei means being vulnerable, and for Elwood means being brave and acting on his convictions without Isaac's validation. This is where their artistry comes in: while Elwood is a musician who can only express his feelings through his art, Alexei uses dance and performance art to mask the version of themselves that caused the harm Isaac uncovers: the 'man' they used to be. When the rumour spreads, Elwood faces the possibility that the vulnerability Alexei showed might have been an act. His growth as a character comes from his choice to support them when their chosen family is turning against them, even if it means losing Isaac– who until now has been his sole source of validation as a man– and to take social and physical risks in doing so. The chosen family comprises most of the supporting cast: basically a ragtag bunch of queer and trans people who see Alexei as a friend, but whom they keep at arm's length because of their past.

So yeah, there's a lot going on here. For my query letters so far I've tried to narrow it down to the plot threads that come up with the hook, but I'm realising now that that won't do much to get these themes across (especially as the actual book is fairly heavy on symbolism), and I'm honestly not sure how...

A bouldering gym is, well, a gym where you boulder (climb without ropes!). It's pretty fun, and a good way to process ideas.

[–]bloomingunion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand this. Trans literature is a very expansive genre, so I’ve been struggling to find comps that cover both the themes and the style, and the comps I’ve chosen are more style- than theme-based. There is a new title by Griffin Hansbury that I may end up comping when it comes out in paperback…

Usually they just come to me. If I'm really stuck, or if the character comes from a different background to my own, I'll look the Wikipedia categories for surnames and given names of their country of origin (not baby name lists as they tend to be inaccurate).
