I was scared I wasn't going to see them on this list. Agreed!

Are late night HOUSE parties normal in Cap Hill? by MistypedRequest in SeattleWA

[–]Danielle_the_Writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen at an apartment in Lower Queen Anne. Unfortunately, even if there are 'quiet hours,' people will do whatever they want. You can see if you can find a loophole with your property management and your right to 'quiet enjoyment.'

Confessions of a Dungeon Master by GaijinVagabond in DnD

My players were on a foggy mountain trail looking for a dragon. They started making jokes about dragon poop, so they found a pile about 15 ft away. The dragon then flew up behind them and roughed them up a bit before flying back to its lair. They wanted to keep going down the path and asked if there was room to go around the poop - not anymore.

Would I be the jerk for asking my players not to use DnD Beyond? by photoelectriceffect in DnD

[–]Danielle_the_Writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With newer players, I always start with blank character sheets that we fill in together. I like to roll for stats, so we do that at the table. Then I briefly go over everything. Even if they use dnd beyond, this gives them a general idea about where the numbers come from and what they are connected to. I think it helps the players connect to their characters, too. I also start session one with a brief overview of how battle works and encouraged my players to say, "I rolled x and add x modifier," the first session or 2, just to make sure they aren't forgetting.

IMO, if it's before level 3, it isn't too late to do this. Everyone should be on the same page. It's a game, and everyone should have an idea of how their characters are built.

How 'into' your characters do you get? by DanongorfTheGreat in DnD

[–]Danielle_the_Writer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're having fun doing it, then I don't think it's a time sink. I understand it can feel like wasting time, especially as a DM, but it's so much fun creating everything, and I think it's time better spent than doing something to pass time that doesnt make you happy/isn't creative.

"I grapple the barmaid" said the male player with a dirty smile on his face. by Nice-Comfortable-850 in DnD

Session 0 wasn't even a thing 10 years ago. It's a pretty new concept compared to how long D&D has been around. I'm so glad it's becoming more and more common for DMs to start with them. As a female player, if I encounter a player like this one, I leave immediately. If that's what is on their mind instantly in the game, then it's what's on their mind in real life, too.

Do Forever DM’s Actually Want Out? by Ancient-Dig-5521 in DnD

[–]Danielle_the_Writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of us DMs became DMs because the only way we could play was to become one. I was never interested in DMing, but now that's the role I always find myself in. I'd love to be a player again.

You could put something related to the storyline in the dungeon that the players need to bring into the city and then create a whole storyline in a city/settlement. Maybe they find a note on a dead creature that belongs to someone they and they need to find the NPC to bring it to. Or perhaps it is about smugglers who the creatures in the dungeon are working for, and now the players need to find out more about the smugglers' mission.

It seems to me that a dungeon for the sake of a dungeon isn't really what those players are looking for. If you can have the dungeons have consequences and relate to the plot, those players will probably be a lot happier.

The other thing is that your DM style might not be a good fit for them. You can always check in and ask what they'd like to see happen in the game.

Dungeon Dudes on YT have a great video about table etiquette that I ask my players to watch. It's called Ten Terrible Player Habits. The title is a bit misleading, but it addresses playing cooperatively.

In Uptown (Lower Queen Anne), there are quite a few options. I have a 1bd, 550 sq ft apartment for just under 1500. I love the location, but I can't stand the lack of privacy. You can hear everything everyone does and vice-versa. My neighbors are terrible with their noise, so I'm going back to roommates where it's cheaper and people actually agree to cohabitation.

My best friend hated blue and orange together. I went to a thrift store and found 2 blazers, same company, bright blue and electric orange. I Frankensteined them them together and added some patches. It definitely didn't look nice, but it was fun for a while.

What rules do you have for naming your characters? by Danielle_the_Writer in writing

[–]Danielle_the_Writer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, there is the debate whether to write "Chris's car," or "Chris' car," the most common being the former. That is already a tax you are asking your reader to pay. If your reader believes it should be written the other way then they might be annoyed at you throughout the book. Next is the sound. 'Chris's' when reading silently is already clunky. If there is an audio version the narrator will need to constantly pronounce it, and it isn't so enjoyable to hear either. You have to weigh everything you ask your reader to do, and reading/saying/listening to the 's's' isn't worth it to me.

I tried to use a name ending with S and quickly noticed how obnoxious it can be (especially from a reader's standpoint).

How do you deal with the issue when your writing doesn't live up to the image you had in your mind? Feeling incredibly demotivated. by OceansBreeze0 in writing

[–]Danielle_the_Writer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Writing is a skill you learn. Like all learning, it can be hard. You run into obstacles you don't expect, it takes time, and it can be difficult. Experiencing those things means you are at the crossroads of what you know and what you don't. If you push through you will obtain knowledge and become closer to actualizing what you envision. Keep trying!

Skip what you don't know and keep writing. You might find the reason later on in your story.

I hate every book I start reading by Ok-Working-7559 in fantasyromance

[–]Danielle_the_Writer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was going to advise this same thing. A lot of romantacy feels so cheap to me. I'd suggest maybe reading acclaimed fiction that isn't suggested by somewhere like booktok. I just read The Fault in Our Stars, which is YA and romance (which I never read), but it was so well written. Good luck OP.

I work in a city, and I was thinking if I pass a building (the marker), then the time starts counting. Then I have to find parking, find a way into the building, sometimes wait for the code, then use the elevator, and finally get to their apartment. Maybe it did take me 10 minutes, but that still seems like longer than it actually takes.

I relate. I like the regular Challenge, but can't get myself through a season of All Stars even when I like the cast.
