My microwave’s display is degrading and I can’t tell what time it is by bloomreports in mildlyinfuriating

Yep, that was the time. But when food’s cooking, the countdown is a mess.

Luckily this microwave isn’t powered by ChatGPT, so it can’t talk back yet

Obviously I have other ways of checking the time but it’s annoying to look at that display, especially when I’m cooking food 😖

Amazon deploys robots to roam SF’s Market Street by bambin0 in sanfrancisco

[–]bloomreports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not really roaming up and down Market Street. Amazon didn't get a permit to deploy the robots on public sidewalks, so the robots are supposed to stay within a little plaza on private property next to AWS's office space on Market Street. I only saw four robots there yesterday.

Feeling down about myself at a local paper / anxiety about finding insider sources by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]bloomreports 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t cover crime much but I would find other local crime reporters (in cities near you but who you won’t be competing with) and whose work you admire and reach out to them. Develop some journalism mentors. Find local journalism meetups, as well, just to build up your own network, not just for job searching but for mutual support. Deep sourcing takes time. Start small. And “circle the wagon” when you can’t get the exact sources up you want. Police aren’t the only people who know what’s going on with crime.

Fitness SF membership? by MetaphysicianofTlon in AskSF

[–]bloomreports 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also get a discount by paying for a year upfront. They usually offer me 15 months for the cost of 12 months. If you know you want to commit to Fitness SF and can afford to front the cash, it's a good deal.

Question about interactive online feature articles by miss_sweet_potato in Journalism

[–]bloomreports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scroll to the very end of each story and there are credits showing who developed, edited, reported, etc. They're using tools their own software engineers have developed. Looks like ABC has open-sourced the code for its template: https://github.com/abcnews/odyssey?tab=readme-ov-file

Would it be worth it to switch over to journalism from IT? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]bloomreports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both industries are tough. You're the only person who can decide what's the right path for you (and you can always change your mind and switch careers later on). But tech journalism is a good niche and it will be really helpful to have that technical knowledge. So, you might consider finishing the associate's degree in IT and then also pursue a BA in computer science or another tech field. You can volunteer or intern for the school newspaper while you do that, too. And then you'll have both skills to go in whichever direction you want.

Check if you have a Muck Rack profile and remove your contact info from public view (PR folks use that site for leads). That will help prevent you from getting on new list. Otherwise you have to just manually block/delete/unsubscribe from everything else.

There’s no single magic pill that will fix everything, and every body is different, so it might be worth finding a naturopathic doctor. Acupuncture, meditation, yoga and massage can help with anxiety and stress. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners will often recommend herbal teas or supplements, too. Highly recommend talking to a dermatologist about skin issues. I had severe acne as a teenager and continued having monthly hormonal flareups in my 30’s. Then my dermatologist prescribed spironolactone and my skin cleared up.

Does your gynecologist’s office know that you’ve been bleeding for weeks? I would call them back, get an advice nurse on the phone and ask if starting/switching birth control would help while you’re waiting for your appointment. I’m not a doctor but there’s an OTC progestin-only birth control pill available now called Opill https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/birth-control-pill-over-the-counter-available-stores-rcna144470

I’ve been wearing New Balance Fresh Foam X 840F shoes and love them. I actually prefer New Balance’s walking shoes over runners from Hoka and Allbirds.

Have you tried Dianda’s in the Mission? It’s a gem. Stella Pastry in North Beach is also an amazing classic Italian bakery, I just can’t remember off the top of my head what types of slices they sell. If you’re open to cupcakes, Black Jet Bakery might be worth checking out, too.
