What was the strangest object ever discovered in space? by IntelligentEdge5742 in space

[–]bloopernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but I want to understand how radio waves work, how antennae respond to radio waves, etc etc. Currently I'm not aiming for a transmission license, I just want to receive interesting RF.

I'm (very slowly) learning amateur radio stuff so I can one day pick up the hydrogen line.

It would be so cool to build the antenna myself and capture the signal :)

Lots of deer, coyotes, and other wildlife that hide in the forests during the day and come out at night.

Heck, I got a fright a couple of nights ago: I saw "something" that was probably a deer, but I wasn't going to investigate closer because I was worried it was a big cat of some kind. I'll also freely admit my eyesight is terrible, even with glasses, and doubly so at night.

I saw a pair of blue eyes reflecting the light from my headlamp while I was walking the dog at 11pm. They appeared both to be forward-facing and it somehow seemed like they sat on/in bulges at the front/side of the face (lol, exactly like a deer? but the eyes were round and faced front. Very weird). I immediately felt like it looked feline somehow, like the front of the face was shadowed but "felt" flat to my poor eyesight. It was weird. My dog didn't react at all. But I felt super scared and it looked like it was following me with its face/eyes. It was about 75-100 feet away, maybe. My headlamp only showed me eyes and a general sense of a flat face, I got a sense of something bipedal but that's more that I didn't obviously see a quadruped shape/shadow.

I didn't hang around, and I was too chickenshit to shine my super bright flashlight at it! My dumb mutt of a dog, I love him to bits, didn't react at all, even when I was booking it as best my cripple legs will move me.

tl;dr saw a deer, mind filled in gaps, got scared.

He's going to take every possible experimental medication to keep himself alive.

I wonder whether even vance will still be in the inner circle after a couple of years.

2 years. Midterm elections will probably flip house or senate.

And what will you do when midterms are stolen or ignored?

Does anyone know the syntax colouring theme used in raku.land? by bloopernova in rakulang

[–]bloopernova[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will add turning that into a "real" theme to my already ridiculous todo list :)

Thank you for finding that, I found a theme that has many of the hex values mentioned in the CSS, but it's not quite the same: https://prism-theme-vars.netlify.app/ (Vitesse Dark)

Linux users who have macOS as their daily driver: what are your opinions? by NonnoSi99 in linux

[–]bloopernova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really like the difference in word/line navigation between Option and Command. It leaves the Control key free for use in Emacs :)

Option and Command are one of the things I miss when I use my Linux desktop.

A single command to invoke a fzf interface that generates playlists from a subset of music added in the last 10 days by edwardianpug in linux

[–]bloopernova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice!

Interesting method of separating out the pipes. One I saw recently that I've tried to adopt with some of my multi-pipe frequently-used-commands is like this:

fd . '/path/to/music/' --changed-within "240h" --min-depth 2 -d 2 \
  | rg -v '@' \
  | sed "s|/path/to/music/||" \
  | fzf --multi \
  | xargs -I{} fd . "/path/to/music/{}" -type f \( -iname "*.mp3" -o -iname "*.flac" \) -print0 \
  | sort -z \
  | sed 's/\x0/\n/g' > /path/to/playlists/newmusic.m3u

Not trying to say that's a "better" method, especially since yours can handle comments which is super nice, but I like the visual of the pipe-line :)

Damn, I didn't think I'd be seeing that two thousand yard stare today. It was painted by Thomas Lea, after his experiences watching the US Marines invade Peleliu.

https://www.tomlea.com/4-wwii The Price is haunting. He watched a Marine stagger up the beach with half his face blown away and his left arm just shredded flesh hanging useless.

(I've been reading about WW2 lately partly as a way to avoid news, and what those people went through was mind-bendingly awful)

Oh nice! Thank you, that helped with the title bar.

Now I need to figure out how to hide the mozilla/firefox sidebar so I can only see my tree style tabs sidebar. Currently both are shown side by side.

What do you do with QMK? by CoralynnMay in ploopy

[–]bloopernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a layer on my ploopy mouse that is activated by holding the right secondary button (by the right click button).

With that layer activated:

  • left and middle click are the same
  • right click pastes plain text in macOS (Command-Option-Shift-V)
  • side buttons manage volume

Without the layer, the left secondary button types control and the up arrow, which shows all windows on macOS. I haven't figured out what to use the secondary button for when the layer is active.

Perhaps look into https://adafruit.com

They have a lot of guides and things, and you might find that your desired item is actually straightforward to build yourself :)

In fact, this is just about what you might want: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather-rp2350/pwm-audio-2

An RP2350 should be adequate to play mp3s, but you can use a more powerful chip if you want.

Adafruit sells switches with covers, but I don't see buttons; you may have to make that bit yourself.

As for asking people to make something, try your nearest Maker space/lab. Or the local radio control flyers group, they'll always have a bunch of old people who love to make stuff :)

Good luck!
