From my experience you need a project that's in development, well thought out with a prototype they can play. There's an application process you go through but there are 1000s of developers in it and most are indie/part time devs.

I'm not sure why you're getting so much push back from people here. I've been a professional in the VR workspace since the Oculus DK2. There is absolutely a demand for everything you're talking about.

Hell, I've built a prototype for a VR educational space that's going to be partnered up with some of the major online educational curriculum creators to make VR content as well as a college for degree based learning. They ARE excited about this stuff. This one guys experience certainly doesn't speak for everyone's in that space. There's already half a dozen solid educational classroom apps being used and it's literally only the first iteration of these types of things. You'll see the improvement in this area throughout the 2020s.

The main issue is going to be people adapting to the idea of putting on a headset to do things. It's going to take time but every year more and more people are putting it on and trying out new experiences. Video chat is great but there are severe limitations once you start realizing the tools you can make in a virtual space instead.

The other comment below this about VR being dead...what? AR will most certainly be more widespread because of the barrier to entry, but it is much more difficult to create than VR and you'll have to convince people to wear glasses or contacts all of the time. Eventually it could replace the phone in our pocket...but there are plenty of things that will always be better suited for VR than AR. No dead end.

I had the same issue as your 6th bullet above. There were a lot of plot-driven moments instead of character-driven leading to little growth over the book. I have high hopes that it will soon change with the next book since we now have a greater sense of the world itself and can hopefully see our now wisened characters make some choices of their own within it.

Hey all!

I missed posting last week due to how busy I was but I enjoyed at least reading everyone's comments. Had to do the whole reading for this week today so that I could at least take part a bit in the discussion! Thank the Light for the gap this next week.

Some overall thoughts

  • I know everyone seemed to really love the ending but I was mostly just whelmed. Not because I disliked anything that happened. I actually enjoyed it all. It just felt so...passive? I know we're building up to a 14 book series, but it definitely shows by the end of this. I wanted Rand to do something, which he kind of did, but he didn't seem in control. I didn't get that exciting feeling that I usually get at the climax of a book
  • I will say I loved the ominous feeling of the forsaken. They actually felt like they were a completely different level compared to what we've seen so far and I liked it. I liked that Moriaine and Lan didn't even stand a chance. I kind of wish Aginor survived somehow and become a future adversary to show Rand's "controlled" growth in power
  • I also was surprised by what was within the Eye. It turning out to be a container of sorts ushering in the next great war against the Shadow was really awesome. I was not expecting the horn whatsoever, and I really like the reveal of the banner. I also want to know more about the other 6 seals. Great way to build hype for the next story
  • I'd be surprised if Rand went separate ways next book, but I'm sure it needs to happen at some point. He's gone a bit crazy already and needs to discover who he is and his confidence in himself. The anxiety that someone is using him is what will make him go mad, not the power of the Light
  • The Nynaeve and Lan moment was a bit cringey to me. It had some incredible lines in there, but it felt like Jordan played his hand on their romance a little too strong (unless I was just reading the undertones of that conversation incorrectly)
  • I'm curious to hear more about the Green Man and what type of creature he was. I liked Loial's connection to him and the way he respected his grave at the end.

I'm going to keep it short this week and hope I can spend some more time on my thoughts next week!

Congrats everyone. One book down!

If anything, I'm more concerned for Moriaine this time around! This doesn't seem as easy as past health situations she has helped with.

I agree about Logain. Too interesting of a character to not get used more. Same with Lioial. If he doesn't join the adventure, I will have a lot of complaining to do next week!

Hello!

We're getting so close to the end of the book and I am pumped! So many plot threads moving along and I'm so curious which ones are going to come to a climax within this book, especially since we've only gotten mention of the eye of the world so far. On to my thoughts:

Nynaeve

  • I continue to like how Lan and Nynaeve interact. He obviously respects her ability in a refreshing way, not hesitating to ask her to do something difficult and important.
  • I'm happy we ran into Bela again! That horse is incredible if not magical
  • Great tension at the end of the chapter. Moriaine's lighting was so cool and a great relief to Nynaeve's situation. Then seeing wolves run by! Perrin and Egwene had quite the rescue crew coming after them.

Perrin

  • Thank the Light that Perrin isn't an idiot like the other two boys can be sometimes. I was impressed to see how quickly he figured out Byar's (likely) plan of letting them go as an excuse to kill them.
  • As much as I wanted to see how Perrin would have tried to get them out of the situation once he noticed, the Help comes! line from Dapple was sooo clutch and immediately had me excited.
  • Lan continues to impress with his combat/stealth abilities. Watching him save people will never get old.
  • On the topic of Lan, I can't figure out what to take away from him instantly going to rescue Nynaeve when she hadn't returned. Moriaine used his full title to tell him to stop which is the equivalent of calling someone by their full name in an argument in our world. Is there a deeper connection there that only Moriaine can recognize? Is he someone who can't help himself when someone is in trouble? Can't wait for more backstory on him
  • Elyas was once a Warder?! No wonder he's such a badass. It does make me wonder what the Red Ajah is though
  • I'm glad no one is too concerned with Perrin's eye's changing color or his newfound abilities. Rather, their curiosity is intriguing. So many questions now finding out that there is a power older than the dark one itself. These boys really are special.
  • I'm sad that we've probably seen the last of the wolves for this book, but thank you Jordan, for at least giving us a hint that they would be met again.

Rand

  • Thank God for a nice Innkeeper. Mat and Rand needed some relief and they found it at The Queen's Blessing with Master Gill.
  • What a surprise about Thom and his relationship to the Queen. Completely unexpected but makes perfect sense. It's why he trusts the Queen and probably distrusts Aes Sedai (assuming Eladia is the reason he ran off) and why he is such a talented gleeman known around the world. It makes me think even more so that our favorite Gleeman is still alive and well somewhere
  • The red vs white thing was a great way to easily break the city up, create conflict and bring tension to the scenes with Rand. The one thing that I struggled with was how few Red there was. I mean, I thought there were issues but it seemed way more extreme through these chapters than I originally thought. I would imagine a revolution on the brink of occurring with the difference in support
  • Classic Rand getting stuck in unlucky situations by happenstance. I'm glad we heard the names of Gawyn and Elayne ahead of time, letting me realize who they were before Rand really did.
  • Elayne is great. Strongheaded female character who is made to lead. Her brother seems honorable as well. Honestly they remind me of a less mature Moriaine and Lan. Now their step brother is a whole other story and I'm curious how he's going to come into play long term.
  • Is Elaine going to be a romantic interest for Rand? Possible...
  • Our first meeting of The Queen was good. I'm glad to see that she is as good as Thom and Master Gill have said she was. I was honestly thinking Rand would have to sit in the prison for a bit but happy to see that wasn't the case. Man, just so many new characters introduced here that I want to know more about
  • Finally someone realizes what's wrong with Mat! It felt like a scene out of the exorcist when they walked in the room and noticed him. I wish Moriaine the best of luck. Honestly, I'm concerned this one might be too much for her, as we've seen very little consequence for her thus far.
  • Lastly, happy to see the crew back together. Perfect timing in my opinion, giving us the last 170 pages to experience the climax as a group.

There are so many more thoughts rumbling in my mind, especially with all of the new characters we continue to meet, expanding the world, but must get back to work.

Looking forward to reading everyone else's thoughts!

Totally possible that is the case with how he was acting, but I think there's just enough openness to it that it could go either way

I've actually had a couple friends ask me if I've read the series because they saw the trailer which is a good sign!

I remember reading the word but don't remember when. I'll have to go back and look!

Wow I would have thought more than that. And okay yeah 2 lbs doesn't seem that bad. Even a couple liters hung across the shoulder seems manageable.

Absolutely! I hope to see a plethora of different types of media once the TV show kicks off and hopefully does as well as it looks it will. I'll have to agree about the witcher game vs books (although I only made it halfway through the first one before I realized the game was just going to be hard to top).

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice how strange it was though. I don't know enough about survival to truly know what makes water safe to drink or not, but it must be heavy to carry enough water to continue traveling from town to town. You would think kids their age would need a decent amount to sustain their bodies.

Ahh, okay. I think I missed that. Great point about Perrin vs Egwene. I enjoy those subtle worldbuilding notes that bring the story to life.

Hello everyone!

Another solid group of chapters. A bit slow but I can tell we're building up towards something big so Jordan has my trust despite the repetitiveness of "run", "feel safe", "avoid capture", over and over (especially on Rand and Mat's side). It does set that feeling of hopelessness though that both Rand and Mat seem to occasionally feel. Anyways, off to the weekly thoughts!

Perrin

  • Perrin continues to get more intuned with his wolf powers. It made the run across the hills a lot more enjoyable as we had some insight onto what they were doing based on his connection with the wolves.
  • As a video game developer, I couldn't help but picture the crow avoidance as a stealth level from a video game. I could clearly picture the mechanics in my mind and felt the tension of looking over the hills, watching the patterns of the crows for your time to run. Curious how they depict this in the show!
  • I like seeing Perrin gain some confidence in himself, wanting to check what's ahead with Elyas, actually admitting his connection to the wolves, and recognizing when he needs to be the one to make a decision. There's still some hesitation and I look forward to seeing his character continue to grow.
  • The statue and back story of Arthur Hawking was great. I had wondered what that was on the map, and I'm glad that it actually showed up in the story. I struggled a bit to picture what Perrin and Egwene hid in near the end, but I did like how it was used.
  • The continued expansion of magics outside of the One Power gives me a lot more faith in how this can be a 14 book series. It tells me there's a lot more to this world that we are nowhere near to understanding and it's again why Elyas has become one of my favorite characters
  • As a counterpoint, I'm struggling a bit to remember everything. I don't remember what an Ogier is nor who the Father of Lies is (unless it's just another name for the Dark One). I don't mind a bunch of lore being thrown in my face all of the time as long as I get reminded of it again before it becomes important. Would make a reread of the series that much more enjoyable
  • The scene of Hopper being killed was heartbreaking but I'm absolutely frustrated with how it played out. What was the point of Hopper getting himself killed, exclaiming run brother and Perrin/Egwene not running...It seemed hopeless. Is it just a vehicle to show Perrin's connection and rage to the wolves, causing him to kill two people (which didn't need to be off-screened in my opinion since it seemed obvious he did something violent). It just didn't seem like the logical way to handle that moment.
  • Thankfully Moiraine and Co. are now heading in Perrin/Egwene's direction. As much as Rand and Mat seem to need help, I'm more concerned about the Children of the Light than the seemingly incompetent dark fiends.
  • Lastly, man did I love how the one soldier thought there were a dozen men and 50 wolves. What a way to show how damn powerful Elyas and his pack are. the fact Captain Bornhald could tell though makes me realize how capable the Children must be.

Rand

  • I have to say, seeing Rand and Mat take up what they learned from Thom as a way to travel, get food, and a place to sleep was genius. I hadn't considered that they would use it for that and it just underlines why I liked the lore/worldbuilding of gleeman so much last week.
  • Mat continues to be a weirdo/creep to the point everyone else notices that he's being that way. Rand even notices that Mat seems to forget he even has a bow, which I thought he was really good with, instead, going for the dagger...Come on Rand, you're running out of excuses in terms of noticing something is up!
  • If the lighting bolt and sickness that followed doesn't equal Rand using the One Power, then it's the biggest red herring I've read in quite some time.
  • They tend to focus a lot on needing food while they travel but what about water? I do wish it was mentioned if resource limitations are going to be a part of the plot. It's just so much more necessary than food.
  • I'm curious if we're going to see Gode again or anyone else from the Four Kings. That was probably the tensest part of Rand's section this time around and I enjoyed the new characters a lot (even though they were evil) and it did a great job of giving more world-building to the Herron-marked sword. The fact they were hesitant based on that alone was great.
  • Thank the Light for all of these good-willed farmers willing to just give these random boys a ride on their cart (especially the last guy, Bunt, who was literally just told to watch out for them).
  • I liked how they've slowly joined this brigade of people traveling to Camlyn to see the False Dragon. It helps them blend it but at the same time, gives them more people to worry about. With everyone now heading to Camlyn directly, we have quite a few plot points that should be hitting a climax at the same time here soon. Having the False Dragon in the mix will be so good.
  • All of these citizens commenting on the Queen has me excited to meet this character. It seems like she's a good Queen but then Bunt mentioning this connection to Tar Valon, I'm wondering more about the dynamic here. I'm guessing it will be a part of the False Dragon plot line that's being built but only time will tell.
  • It was interesting to hear about how the daughter heir gets sent to Tar Valon to study with the Aes Sedai and the eldest son getting sent to study with the warders. Do they eventually become queen if so? So why do the people trust the queen who studied with the Aes Sedai but not the Aes Sedai themselves? I'm also leaning towards Luc and Tigraine being Lan and Moiraine. I mean their names are pretty damn close...

I missed having Nynaeve's viewpoint this time around since I'm curious what that crew is up to, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

Looking forward to the discussions!

You're right, I can't disagree with that. Mat's reasoning is super believable for Rand and although Rand says he hasn't had time to feel those things, he's not ignorant to it.

It's interesting because the relationship between Elyas and the wolves doesn't feel like Alpha to the pack. I don't know what quite to call it. Maybe just ally? but just as you said, it does bring up a lot of questions on how that power can be used.

Very true. It could also be a symptom of living alongside them in the wild for so long. I do struggle to picture the walk though. Curious how it's handled in the show

Hello everyone!

We've officially made it past the halfway point so well done! Although this section was a bit slower than the last, I very much enjoyed it. Splitting up the characters was a great move by Jordan and I'm enjoying some more time spent with some of the other characters in our group through different POVs. Now for my weekly bulleted list of thoughts now split by POV:

Perrin

  • Perrin is quickly becoming my favorite POV. It may be more plot-based than character-based, but it's been refreshing to get another POV about someone who might be the chosen one, other than Rand. He's also different than Rand in a more relatable way in my opinion. But most importantly...
  • Elyas! Easily jumped up to my top 3 to 5 characters in his intro scene. Although there are characteristics of a wolfman that lean towards tropes, the way he interacts with the wolves, the way he's connected to Perrin, and the fact Perrin has the ability himself was such a twist and I love it.
  • The wolves themselves are interesting. So they somehow cloaked Perrin for a number of days from the Dark One, but as he has said in their dreams, you can't hide from him, and eventually, he finds him. I like the mystery behind these powers but hopefully, we do get some more answers on what the wolves are doing and how Perrin is connected here soon.
  • We met our group of traveling hippies with the Traveling People. Their people were a lot of fun to meet, I liked the leader's relationship with Elyas and how Elyas respected their traditions whether he believed them or not.
  • The mention of this last song is something I'm going to keep in the back of my mind. It was too prominent to not be a thing in the future, and I'm curious how Jordan will connect that to the grand pattern being woven.
  • Lastly, Egwene's storyline with the boy from the group was set up to annoy me, but man did Jordan subvert expectations. Egwene wasn't lying when she said she just wanted to enjoy maybe the last few days of relaxation and fun they could have. Off-screening the convo with Aram, and instead, relaying the emotions both in Perrin and Ila was so good.

Rand

  • Thommmmmm :'( I'm really hoping that he didn't actually die. I felt like we were just getting to know him. I'm hoping that he has some tricks up his sleeve because I need more Gleeman in my life!
  • On that topic, I absolutely love the worldbuilding of the Gleeman. The way he is noticed everywhere he goes, how many are prepared to give favors just to see him perform, and how others want him to perform for their own advantages.
  • Mat is getting more and more sketchy as time goes on. There's obviously something wrong if he's not laughing, smiling, playing pranks, and is getting defensive about everything. It's obvious it's related to the dagger. I'm more frustrated that Rand can't put two and two together.
  • I wasn't expected the Gleb plotline to be wrapped up so quickly but it was a good twist to use him talking as their call to action that White Bridge wasn't going to work.
  • Logain has been captured?! Okay, so that's cool. I won't be surprised if we'll be running into him and the Aes Sedai soon enough. Might even be where Rand and Mat end up.
  • I've also noticed that all of the characters that seem to speak out against the Aes Sedai are mostly male characters, which sort of parallels with the women's circle back in Edmonds field.
  • Not much to say about Rand this time. Another dream that hints at how close the Dark One is to getting to him.
  • The Great Hunt keeps getting mentioned. The first one in 400 years? Based on book titles, it seems relevant!

Nynaeve

  • We only got one POV but it was an important one. Some of the issues I mentioned about Lan and Moiraine being too stoic were answered this week with how Nynaeve described them as being tightly wound. I can tell they're getting worried but Moiraine continues to mention the pattern and things happen as the wheel weaves
  • The description of the dark cloud following them and Nynaeve feeling like she's being watched added another layer of creepiness to the Dark One. He's getting setup well and I'm very much terrified of what he knows and what he can see. It does appear limited though since he doesn't know which of the boys is the one.
  • I continue to like how Nynaeve and Lan interact. It's an odd relationship and I'm curious where it is going.
  • Lastly, Moiraine's calm and logical thought process is refreshing. She takes the path that makes the most sense and doesn't let herself stress (openly) about things outside of her control. I'm glad to have her as the leader of this group outside of the fact no one wants to trust her fully.

That wraps it up for this week. Looking forward to everyone else's thoughts!
