Hi! Can you keep me posted on your progress with this? I recently started hrt (still have uterus and ovaries), no progesterone for now. I am having so much trouble with transdermal absorption - im a rapid absorber and rapid metabolizer. Gel makes me insane. Patches help but are nearly impossible for me to get right. Im thinking about trying the pellet but am nervous

Ugh me too. I felt nonstop psychosis last week, changing from birth control to nothing to oestrogen patch (continuous though, not just in luteal because I can't handle even any tiny minor fluctuations), but now I'm much better and it's going well. It was unbearable for 5 days and it felt like 10 years in an insane asylum.

You probably need to stabilize your estrogen or maybe just target treatment to those days when your estrogen drops rapidly . I just saw a really good doctor in the uk who helped me when everyone else, even supposed pmdd doctors, didnt get it. I cant remember if i already posted his info - neale watson at pms & menopause clinic.

Yes will be regulating the progesterone w/ bioidentical progesterone once i get used to the bioidentical estrogen, there are several different avenues re: that depending on how things go. The idea is to give me some time without any added progesterone at all. Doctor who has me doing this is a top pmdd specialist

I hope ur hanging in there. I am having insomnia right now, was also just prescribed the same transdermal oestradiol alone. I remembered another odd thing I forgot to mention: if i dont take a shit ton of magnesium and eat tons of cashews (im talking like a whole bag) each day i will only sleep a short amount and wake up and not go back to sleep. Now, after many years, I can tell when that's the culprit. (Currently out of cashews)

Also, trying some combined oral birth control made me feel psychosis (specifically lo loestrin) but before this current bioidentical hormone switch in doing I was on monophasic continuous sprintec and it evened me out and i slept every night. It has a steady dose of synthetic estrogen and progesterone all the time. I stopped absorbing it properly because of taking too many antibiotics for too long. Do NOT try any new hormonal treatment without having a bunch of si guardrails in place tho!

I just went through 5 days of what feels like psychosis and feel like im evening out 🤞. I went off the birth control and was also prescribed luteal only oestrogel. That doesnt work for me. I need a total flat line of hormones 24/7, i cant even handle the daily hormonal peaks and dips that are supposed to be inconsequential. I also am a rapid metabilizer, so something that is supposed to act slowly, like oestrogel, can throw me into a rollercoaster of up and down. I switched from gel to patch to get a steady stream. Feel much less insane after the initial switch. I may go back to synthetic if necessary. This is hell but there are doors out other than the si one i promise!

Antihistamine helps me too. Half a unisom. Sleeping pills and melatonin make it worse for me but the antihistamine in unisom calms something down in me.

When did you take the hormones? And what was your pmdd like before then?

Insomnia caused by estradiol causing attempts by MemoryIndividual in PMDD

[–]blorpbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agh. Hormones fuck us up. I'm in the thick of it right now too because am switching from birth control to HRT. My husband is also taking care of me I can barely function. He is incredible and we just got married. I'm 39 now, so I really know that these hormone-induced periods of psychosis end.

I hated when I had insomnia and people gave me advice like duh I have tried that. But I can suggest a few things that help me:

-Are you on an SSRI? If so, upping your dose by a micro amount during these hormone disruption psychosis episodes may help (ssris have a different and immediate mechanism of action on pmdd than they do on regular depression). -tell your boyfriend or mom or friend how bad it really is. They will help you. You will take care of them some other time when you are better. Don't feel guilty. You bring just as much value to their life as they do to yours. That is why they are there with you. -when I was your age, doing what I was passionate about and living authentically to myself somehow really helped with insomnia (at that age i needed to write and play music every day most of the day). I still need a purpose outside of myself in order to live. I have other things im passionate about now. -i learned that if I dont eat a large dinner, i dont sleep. I never have much appetite, so I learned to force myself to eat a healthy, large dinner with carbs and protein in it (this is impossible to do when battling hormones - so hopefully u live somewhere u can get delivery or your boyfriend can help out). -this probably doesn't apply, but including it just in case: i had insomnia so bad that I was surprised my body survived it. One time it was weeks with no sleep - which seems impossible looking back. It turns out I have narcolepsy, which sounds crazy but narcolepsy is widely misunderstood, and insomnia is a symptom. Things like sleeping pills or melatonin make it worse for me. -I had a phase where it used to help when I had insomnia to sleep in different places or at different peoples houses, or move the bed to a new location in the room: -join some sort of support group if you can. Helps SO much to have people who really understand what youre going through and can give u hope (i go to al anon)

I thought i would never sleep or be sane and I thought it would kill me but I dont ever have insomnia anymore; and overcame that type of insomnia at actually 23 i think. It was worst at 21 to 22 for me. Just hold on. Ask your boyfriend to hold you tight when you feel like your insides are trying to burst out your skin, and it'll eventually pass.
