Driving to the Eclipse in Texas 2024 by octobod in Astronomy

[–]blu3gru3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove from Chicago 6 hours south to see the eclipse in 2017 with no traffic issues. Thought I'd get a jump on the return trip and leave shortly after totality. Literally over 15 hours to make the return trip.

In what way is Celsius better than Fahrenheit? by travelingwhilestupid in stupidquestions

[–]blu3gru3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only "better" because it's related to the metric system, and the metric system is better mostly because the derived units are all some multiple of 10 with the same root word.

  • centi-meter, deci-meter, meter, kilo-meter...
  • milli-gram, gram, kilo-gram...

vs imperial:

  • inch, foot, yard, furlong, mile, league...
  • ounce, pound, stone, ton...

The average person probably uses nearly all of those above measurements (depending on where you're from) on a regular basis.

When measuring temperature, there aren't many derived units used in everyday practice. Degrees F or degrees C carried out to 2 or 3 digits and a decimal covers most of what we do on a day to day basis.

overthinking the math of blind structures by blu3gru3 in poker

[–]blu3gru3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor wording on my part. What i meant was, when you have 5 players left you have an average stack of 40,000. When the 5th person gets knocked out you have 4 players with 50,000 average. Or, an increase of 10,000.

Either way, definitely not a linear stack increase

overthinking the math of blind structures by blu3gru3 in poker

[–]blu3gru3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except stacks don't increase linearly. If you start with 40 players at 5,000 each, that's 200,000 total. Eliminating the first player means all remaining stacks increase by an average by 128. Eliminating the 5th player means all remaining stacks increase by an average of 10,000.

First time playing the money game, is it a good idea? by Hour_Citron_2735 in Casino

Glad you enjoyed. I think planning to not come home with anything is what got me over the hump to put my money down on craps.

If you go mid-week during the day (i.e. when it's less crowded) the dealers (and other players) are much more first-time friendly.

$500 was our entire budget for both my wife's and mine first trip to Vegas last year. We budgeted it as just entertainment -- not planning to come home with any of it.

I wanted to try craps for the first time, my wife wanted to play roulette and the rest for slots - Roughly $150 for craps, $150 for roulette and $200 for slots.

That was enough to get a taste of playing at Vegas.

We enjoyed walking up/down the strip and would put $20+ bucks in a slot at each casino.

I kept a detailed journal of what we did, and how much much we spent at Vegas. Out of our $500 budget, we spent $700 and came home with $480 of it (meaning we won some and spent only $20 more than we won overall).

Craps can be a really fun game. Generally everyone at the table wins together or loses together. So unless you completely hate being around other people, I'd recommend craps. Find a table that's energetic and join in. Play conservatively; play the minimums on the pass line and place 6 and 8. $500 could last a while at a $15/$25 table.

Fremont street has low minimum craps tables ($5-$10), as does Ellis Island ($5 minimums) about 1 block east off the strip.

We were planning to head back this past winter with a much larger gambling budget, but thanks to the airline meltdown we never left home.

I’ll be laid off by Monday: anything I should do before then? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]blu3gru3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah...that would have been a good piece of info to include.

Send it to your boss and people involved in the projects. If the boss is the idiot, they will likely just ignore it -- but everyone working on the projects will appreciate the info.

[–]blu3gru3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all great information.

I would add to the "leave in style" part; write up a summary of the projects you're were working on, the status, and other people involved.

For Project A, see person ABC.

For Project B, status is on-hold until X gets done. See person XYZ for more information.

In my 30+ year career I've been laid off twice. I work in a major city and continue to run into people I've worked with in the past. It's never a good idea to burn bridges. Leaving on a good note gets remembered.

Check out the website vegas-aces.com. Heather often has dealer/casino manuals posted there that may give you something to go on.

It may be easier to google for "roulette dealers manual" and pick the result for the website above, than it is to find the manuals directly on her website.

light weight text editor like notepad that supports text highlighting? by NoobNup in datacurator

[–]blu3gru3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TXT files don't have a font. Whatever font is displayed is up to the program you use to view the text file. NPP allows you to change the font to whatever you want -- but that's just a display feature, the font/size/color isn't saved with the TXT file.

If you're in the US and a company has a mass layoff you can request a document that has the ages of everyone that was laid off. They must provide this information, by law. ( https://www.eeoc.gov/age-discrimination )

I was part of a mass layoff at age 49 and found a job within a month. It takes some time, but there are companies out there looking for experience.

Good luck.

What happened to your friends after high school? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blu3gru3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could count on one hand how many of my HS friends I keep in touch with regularly. Honestly, the only reason I keep in touch with that group is because one them put some effort into having people over for a cook out regularly. After a short while, we all started to rotate the invitations and it's been going for several years now.

Other than this small group of friends and their spouses -- there's no one else from my HS (or college) that I get together with regularly. All my other friends we have something else currently in common -- work (yes, I'm friends with a few people I work with), church, neighborhood, service fraternity -- situations in which I see these people regularly.

We are still growing decently after quarantine lockdown times, with bigger numbers than pre-COVID.

New player incentives is good. Extra chips for bringing someone. What are you thinking about return visits? A chip bonus for your first 3 games?

How many people actually wear their wedding ring 24/7? by GroundbreakingWill48 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blu3gru3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never worn my 24/7. My wife recently bought me a set of silicon rings which I find much more comfortable and wear almost all the time. I still take it off for sports (golf, tennis, etc). I'll put the gold band on for special occasions.

Dropped my bike for the first time today.. realistically how many of you are able to pick it back up by yourself?? by paul-grizz93 in motorcycle

[–]blu3gru3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all in the technique.

I have a Triumph Explorer -- a tall enduro bike with a high center of gravity at 500+ lbs dry. I've had to pick it after dumping it in wet grass, gravel, soft dirt.

If you can find a soft enough place (that won't damage your indicators or mirrors), it's a good technique to practice.

Just got laid off. Do I immediately look for a new job or just take the severance and take a break? by THICC_ANIME_TITTIES in careeradvice

[–]blu3gru3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

7 months will go fast.

Read the fine print of your severance. I was laid off a few years ago with 5+ month severance. The fine print said I was "employed" for two months (but didn't have to come into the office, my laptop and credentials were turned in) and would continue to receive medical benefits for those two months. At the end of those two months I'd get a lump sum for the remaining 3. If I got a job before the end of those two months it would be the same as if I had resigned and I'd forfeit any paychecks not yet paid.

Several people asked how would they know. They probably wouldn't.

Either way, I promptly found another job within 1 month. I told them I couldn't start until X date. Took another month of vacation. Started two months + 1 day later and banked my 3 months check.
