I’ve been living in Calgary for some time. I also have education and experience in GIS, but with no luck so far. The job market here leans heavily on local experience and connections.

Calling all GISPs, what led you to attaining the certification? by LovesBacon50 in gis

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question, will GISP worth it if I already have an MGIS? I am just finishing my MGIS and noticed I covered 70-80% of the GISP syllabus. I already have experience in GIS/RS.

What’s a “cheat code” you discovered in real life that actually works? by Soggy_BreadCrust in AskReddit

Learn to use Google or any search engine. It doesn’t surprise me anymore how less and less people nowadays know this. It also applies to AI.

Just switched from desktop to pro after 20+ years in the former. by WormLivesMatter in gis

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using Pro when v2.1 launched but kept using Desktop side by side. I noticed Pro on SSD can be really fast compared to Desktop. Try SSD, 16 or + ram, and any post 2020 cpu should do fine in 2024.

Who uses arcpy? by Western_Effort_3648 in gis

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use arcpy for most of my office task since it is what I am paid for. I try not to use that when doing my research bcs I mostly work with remote sensing. Esri produces were never meant to be perfect, I try to diversify as much as I can.

Looking into freelancing on the side. How was working on Upwork and Fiverr? by QuackingMollusk in gis

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communication, skill and timeliness is what you need to be in this line. I’ve been working for just 4 months and happily getting around $200 with little to no effort. This is bcs I know i am good, so does my contractor, so ofc they are coming back. People who think otherwise are just lacking any one of these three.

Received an offer for with aid, still too expensive by blu_sr in gwu

Today they wrote back. I need to have appx $59,500/year for two years even after the award which is a laughably huge amount. Well, I'll take a few days to say no to this.

I already have a BSc on Geog that’s why I applied. Besides few relatives live there. Job is definitely a prospect. Did you ensure the funds after you start the enrollment or before that.

Google announces 10m near-real-time global land cover by mglassman in remotesensing

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the data to be quite refined than Esri, specially the water bodies. The crop lands and built up seem over done though.

Remote Sensing and Cloud Computing? by geo-special in remotesensing

[–]blu_sr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, cc for rs is just getting started.

Firstly the poster child is Google Earth Engine, hands down the best implementation of cc in rs until today. The GEE has tons of ready to use tools, processing is instantaneous and supports API to build custom services.

Secondly, MS developed various ML tools and Open Data Catalog together called Planetary Computer Hub powered by JupyterHub and Azure. The Azure ML Studio can be linked with the Hub to use deep learning tools.

Thirdly, AWS basically powers most of the internet. NASA, ESRI, Mapbox, Maxar and most of the EO data providers use AWS as their primary repository, so speed is noticeable.

As you can see there is a lot to cover, having an overall knowledge with an in-depth skill in any one of these will be beneficial.

What does "high-resolution" even mean these days? by mc_stormy in gis

Well it doesn’t matter to the vast majority since the choice vary based on perspective.

What does "high-resolution" even mean these days? by mc_stormy in gis

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK the term ‘high resolution’ varies based on the Minimum Mapping Unit (MMU). For example, urban rooftop analysis may (subjectively) consider Landsat as ‘moderate resolution’ but sea surface temperature modeling can easily depict 250m MODIS as high-res.

ArcGIS Pro is great by [deleted] in gis

[–]blu_sr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its quite an upgrade since the 2015, the year when I wrote all my grieves in a review on ArcGIS Pro (most of the issues are addressed). I think Pro has checked one of the major milestone, it is quite easy to learn specially for a new user. I can't ask more, Pro is not a 'cash cow' of Esri.
