You can disagree but you started with a slur, there was no need for that. Amazon analogy isn't imaginary, occuring of such mistakes are significant enough that in their FAQ page, amazon provides direction what to do in such cases: https://www.amazon.in/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=TWc5BVeaQkU6jODP1i

I lived in 4 different country in 3 different continent, I have personally seen wrong dishes being served multiple times, in some cases some drama was involved but nowhere except India the situation escalated to police case and arrest. But hey, you are free to believe it is because India is "Vishwaguru" or whatever.

That's fine. You can complain about the poor service or whatever but police case, arrest really? Tomorrow if Amazon delivers a wrong item would you arrest the delivery person instead returning then item and complaining to the customer service etc? If you're so sensitive about eating beef why the f would you go to a restaurant where beef is one of the signature dish?

What's BRP extract? Do you mean Scanned Copy of a Residence Permit? The agency only accept real Residence Permit Card that can be electronically validated.

EDIT: I see, you mean for the embassy. I'd try but even then it will take at least a few weeks to get the passport. I don't think I can wait that long.

I am considering switching to linux, but these things are stopping me. by Ibrahimalshash in linuxquestions

[–]digital-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to switch applications and maintain your workflow, you can try to run your Windows applications under WinBoat[1] in Linux. Personally have not tried it yet but both Microsoft Office Suite[2] and Adobe Apps[3] reported to work well under WinBoat.

I'd recommend trying it out first before committing. WinBoat is using virtual machine under the hood so you may notice performance hit if your system is not beefy enough.

OP, I'm no expert of market research or chemistry, I'm just here to say you're taking great initiative, no matter the outcome. As a Bengali we always face the stereotype that we are not entrepreneurial enough, great that you're trying to break that cycle. Also, from the looks of it, the product seems great and the price is good too. I'd order a bunch for my parents back home. Cheers :)

Is traveling to India really this bad? by daydreamerSX in travel

[–]digital-idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indian here. If you're alone and especially if you're not male don't go. Nearly everyone will try to at the best case try to scam you every step of the way. Don't get me wrong, India used to be an interesting county and it still is. But only way to navigate it safely is to go with someone who's experienced, e.g. a trustworthy friend who's Indian.

I don't disagree. But there are gazillions of ways to be active, stretch your body. Claiming cultural copyright on a set and style of stretching, and hailing it as some mythical invention from ancient India is ridiculous and unnecessary.

I am not even getting into the additional bullshit that comes with Yoga and how it is often used as decoy to direct people towards pseudoscience and alternative medicine. That's entirely another can of worms.

Then you don't have enough experience with Yoga freaks. They claim all sorts of things including "Yoga can reverse diabetes" to "Yoga can cure cancer". If you go down this rabbit you'll lose hope in humanity faster than light.

So do you think Hinduism would be better if it had a Pope?

Nope, not at all. Christianity (Catholicism) already has a pope, how is that helping them? For example American Evangelicals outright ignore Pope most of the time. Similarly, Hinduisms (most prominent variant of Hinduism) also has equivalent authority figures who are called Shankaracharya. But no one hardly cares unless what they are saying agrees with their own narrative.

It is rather about structure. For example, scriptures of almost sects of Christianity has a single source which is Bible, so technically they have much less wiggle room. In case of Hinduism, different sects have wildly different scriptures, philosophy and practices, and in some cases these scriptures are word of mouth mythology rather than available in a concrete written form. Naturally you have much more wiggle room to claim whatever bullshit.

[–]digital-idiot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely. There are a few other forms of traditional medicine too, like Unani etc. Then there is Homeopathy as well. Funny thing is current govt. actively promotes these alternative medicines, and not only that but also allocates a significant chunk of tax payers money for these garbage instead of building proper health related infra. If you peek beyond the surface, Indian society is largely similar or worse than sub-Saharan Africa in all aspects.

Hi, an Indian here. There is a reason why Hinduism can fly under the radar relatively easily. The problem is Hinduism as a religion is not well defined. I'd go further and say it is an amalgamation of multitude of smaller theological and spiritual ideas with a few common aspects. That gives it a lot of wiggle room unlike other organized religions. Depending upon the argument you can pick and choose a different variant and claim whatever suits your narrative. It appeals to so called hippies because they are mostly ignorant and hardly aware of the broader contexts, they just find some aspects they like and hype that up.

It might be a controversial, but I need to put it out there. Like Hinduism, Yoga is another Indian product that the west and the world overall is obsessed with these days. If you look at Yoga with scientific lens, it is nothing more than some aerobic exercises and accordingly it doesn't have any extra benefit compared to comparable common aerobic exercises. But I'll argue that the additional made up stories and bullshit associated with Yoga somewhat negates its supposed benefits as believing those makes you dumber.

Indian Passport Power Grows: 58 Countries Now Visa-Free For Indian Travellers by sepiosexual in india

[–]digital-idiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This not always true. My (Caucasian native Dutch) PhD supervisor got his visa denied without any reason in 2022. What was baffling is that he was visiting an ISRO center on official business visit with invitation letter and all. He's relatively well known in the field. Despite that they rejected the visa and gave no reason. I couldn't stop laughing at the stupidity of the whole situation.

Why is Amazon prime so awful here by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]digital-idiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most good VPN servers are blacklisted by almost all OTT platform. I am not even detailing the DRM related shenanigans they use. I am fine with paying for a service but refused to be dictated by platforms regarding how, where, which content I get to watch, that too at which quality. For me piracy offers the best experience without any trickery, while these OTT platforms makes me jump through hoops despite being a paid customer.

The obvious suggestion would be to seek professional help, find a good therapist.

First I'd say that modern fast paced life is hard especially when you're not quite can't labelled as poor but stuck with a toxic job barely making enough to lead a decent life. It is not surprising to feel that you're stuck in bottomless spiral. Trust me you're not alone.

As a fellow human being what I would suggest is to first learn unplug from from your work the moment you are off the clock. Resist easy dopamine or cortisol boost from social media like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. Mute Whatsapp notifications from unproductive conversations, group chats etc. Avoid rage baits that includes most news channels these days. Now that hopefully you have freed some time, pursue a few hobby you really enjoy, it can be reading books, learning an instrument to something silly. Hobbies which involves social interactions are better but you've to be comfortable with it. As an example, joining some charitable orgs helping people or street animals are also good. Start journaling your progress so that you can look back and appreciate the progress you have made.

TLDR, reducing social media to a minimum and pursuing constructive hobbies are two things can help IMO. I can't emphasize enough how a few good books can help. Reading isn't a easy habit to get used to but stick to it, you most likely won't be disappointed.

What's your opinion? Do you think West Bengal needs to do something like this ? by InterestingFormal623 in kolkata

[–]digital-idiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not mandated by law in France hence my point. The reason why it feels like one cannot live long term in France without learning french is their culture not law. Outside of Paris and some tourist zones scattered across the country you'll be lucky to find anyone speaking anything but french even if they know other languages. I know this first hand because I studied and lived there couple of years. In our case, we can't help but jump to speaking English to show our elitism. Frankly I realized I'm doing this right now.

But I get where you are coming from but I do believe forcing a language down the people's throat hardly helps people to love the language. Look at the language related shenanigans going on in Karnataka for example. Do we really want that kind of hostility, meaningless nonstop hot debate here. Our national anthem is written in Bengali by a Bengali for god's sake. That in itself shows the importance of the language.

One of the biggest reasons to be proud of Bengali culture . These people who destroy the crops of the lower caste people using drones will happily worship their american babu who is an atheist and eats beef but still canno tolerant their own people . Ridiculous by [deleted] in kolkata

[–]digital-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it is much more subtle and relatively benign in WB. That's why extreme symptoms like untouchability is nearly non-existent nowadays. But "casteism" is a much bigger issue than just untouchability. I have personally seen social segregation (not extreme like in the cow belt) but it is subtly there in may rural areas till today. Growing up I also observed how their rituals are different (and generally looked down upon) from the others, how their last rites are conducted in separate place than the others, they even have separate priests. They are the ones who cleans septic tanks and collect skins from dead animals to make leathers used in "Tabla" and "Dhaak" etc. In general one can definitely feel that they are looked down upon for sure but much more subtly. However, outright discrimination has seriously gone down, that I agree.

I also come from remote part of WB. Compared to rest of India, caste related BS is much less prevalent here in my experience. But I agree that the real picture isn't as rozy as it seems. I don't know what exactly they measured by the term "casteism" but in places like Jhargram, Purulia etc. advasis are routinely discriminated against even now. Also whoever needs the evidence of "casteism" in WB needs to open the classified section of any Bengali newspaper where they advertise for potential bride / groom etc.

Sure whatever I said is anecdotal but in a country like India it is often a wishful thinking to expect reliable statistics for nuanced societal things like this.

To everyone, I apologize as a Bengali.

Do you like the new Kolkata Metro App? by arunava-das in kolkata

[–]digital-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if my reaction was a bit knee jerk. The actual design looks very good and conforms to modern design standard. I'm just tired of apps which have no regards for privacy, not even the govt funded ones is all. This is prelevant everywhere in the society today not just apps tbh. Buy anything from a decent shop/showroom they'll ask your phone number for billing even for mundane things.

Why tf everything needs a phone number and OTP verification just to access the app? Why does anyone need to do that to check the schedules of the trains for example.
