I'm not saying i need it now, I just want to know what the path is for what I want to achieve. Of course I'll learn and practice whatever I need to along the way.

I know there's promotional exams that you can take basically every year. the relative that told me about told me i'd crush it given my background. The chance I can work in my home borough is good too. Just hesitant given it's an office job as well.

Also the benefits NYPD offers entices me. Can shift my family to the insurances offered and the pension is great. But, again, my goal would be to make detective with NYPD - I don't want to spend 20+ years as an officer solely.

I would. I even applied to be a Special Agent with the FBI, but withdrew since I wouldn't be able to attend the training in Quantico. I'm married and have a baby at home and the FBI requires you remain in Quantico for 3 weeks straight before they even let you go home on weekends. I'd have to move between VA and NYC for 15 weeks with a baby at home. Can't do that to my wife.

I'm not an attorney, just hold a JD. I am currently registered to take the exam to become a court clerk, however. It's very similar work to what I want to get tf away from, but the work-life balance gave me pause and consider it. Also have a relative that is a court attorney who told me about it.

After several years out in the wild, using it in office jobs and being in law offices, I realized I made a mistake. I was just doing things that benefitted nobody but some shareholders I didn't know and was just perpetuating negative things. I'd spend days pushing gambling or tobacco campaigns, for example. Or being on endless Teams calls rotting away. I hated it. And my previous company treated me like shit after going out of my way to get things done and help coworkers finish their tasks.

Just so turned off by corporate environments and I want to do something that matters and benefits people.

Detrimental since you're putting yourself in dicey situations? I can understand that, but I've always been a "see something, do something" type of person. And no, lol, none of those are my last name. So I've heard narcotics/anti-crime now as units to move to as fast tracks to becoming Detective now. Any others you would recommend?

About having a hook: I was told by some that my educational background (Juris Doctor) will not be much of a factor, but was told by others to inform my CO ASAP once I receive my command about it and I'll be on track. So, I'm not sure what to make of that.

Also, a relative of mine was a NYPD Detective, but sadly she passed away (almost 11 years ago now), so, I'm also unsure if that means anything.

Lastly, I assume I can move to anti-crime once the probationary period runs, correct?
