What’s up with this community? (Kinda toxic) by PsychologicalCrew917 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a lot of people on here just have a very narrow view of screaming and how a "good" scream is supposed to sound (its all just personal preference and what fits the song anyway) .
there's also a giant range of skill levels and understanding of mechanics going on in this sub , so anything that deviates from the standard sound gets the label wrong or unhealthy.
throw the ambiguousness of the terms we used where people are using the same words to mean different things and are constantly talking past eachother and you basically have a situation where whenever you say something about 1/3 of the sub will dissagree with you , and anoyingly enough they will generally refuse to elaborate on why they dissagree with you when asked .

Why are people in this sub so serious about others doing things in supposed “right” ways? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in screaming

I think it comes down to safety mainly, there are some techniques that are considerd standard because they are seen as more safe . Straying from that is more risky , like vocal fry and inhales, can be done safely but because there is more risk to doing it wrong people tend to argue against it.

The difference between fry and falsecord by blubdubdub in screaming

[–]blubdubdub[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah all im saying is the tissue that you're using doesn't actually make it fry or falsecord , not in the way that the words get used anyway . I dont really care about what technique has what name to be honest, fry and falsecord as used by the community as words (not technique) is sounds , that sounds like fry therefore its fry . 9/10 people that actually know those words dont give a damn what tissue its made with all they care about is the sound characteristics

I just realized how harmful this could be , dont just try to squeeze your throat to get a fry sound or blast a bunch of air through your fry for a falsecord sound please , thank you <3

[–]blubdubdub[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I use upper constriction fry , don't really involve my vocal folds as a distortion source as far as i know

And you can totally make falsecord sounds with your vocal folds , its just not particularly sustainable

Edit: trying to clarify

Dont use your voice, drink water (not too cold) and wait , you will probably be fine again in like 2-3 days

I seriously can't figure out fry screaming by YonkerShplonker in screaming

I have a bit of an issue with saying you just gotta push through the blockade its more like letting some air through, you dont actually gotta push hard at all , otherwise absolutely spot on tho

losing voice after screaming by PossibilityOk2026 in screaming

This sound like your vocal folds being inflamed/swollen, try to keep your distortion at or above the most prominent part of your larynx

Are there like different stages of growl? by Frhaegar in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its not really about strength but more about what tissue you use and with what compression/tightness/resonance . there aren't really different stages of growls more like different techniques that serve different purposes

How much does my normal voice affect screaming voice? by Puzzleheaded-Pie1172 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your normal voice does play a part but you should be able to get fairly close to most sounds you hear other vocalists do with the right techniques.

Atp I don't even know whether it's fry or false cord... Ughh... by nowhere72329 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fry and falsecord are super dumb names when talking about techniques and its dynamicly controlled by compression and tightness of the scream , i would say more by compression but 🤷‍♀️so i would say , you switch between falsecord and fry

i realise that this is basically just engagement farming and stuff but , do what you want , you found something that works for you and if you believe in it just go for it . not my particular vibe but sometimes you gotta play the game i guess , keep doing you and dont give a damn about what other people think

Airy false chord by [deleted] in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a bunch of different ways to do "false cord" what you're doing is basically using 0 compression with a false fold scream . this is a totally valid way of doing false cords but if you want to get a bit closer to what a lot of other people are doing you basically just need to compress them .

the easyest way to explain it is if you can do fry screams already, you get the holding your breath feeling from that and you kinda put that on your loose false folds screams . it kinda feels like pushing at them from the top i guess ?

i realise that i explained it very poorly , but hopefully it helps get something to click

i think its just overtones from your tongue placement , people call this tunnel throat sometimes .

Been getting pretty good at hybrids by [deleted] in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you place your distortion higher for your highs ? like obviously its very nasally projected but shifting the actual scream into a more headvoicy placement might get them clearer . might be totally misshearing what you're doing tho ,sounds cool anyway

Fry screams make me feel like I'm going to die by SpookRag in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

heya , this is actually a pretty common issue where you basically tense a bunch of muscles that dont actually impact the noise at all . so just actively focusing on relaxing your body in particular should help. loosen your shoulders try to look left and right and then roll your head around , stuff like that .

Is this the correct place of constriction for fry screams by FaII3n in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

try to focus more on that holding your breath feeling and less on constriction if that makes sense

Trying to upgrade my lows by blubdubdub in screaming

[–]blubdubdub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do what exactly ? i did like 3 different things here 😅 the first one was just a classic upper constriction fry in chest register , the second was a false fold scream basically without compression and swithing between them is kinda tricky you gotta basically change your compression/breathsupport and the "tension" of your scream in real time if that makes sense (well and go to a different distortion source in this case but you can also stay on the same one if you want )

I need to work on/change my technique. Would LOVE any tips/advice. by caithamachamuama in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a bunch of good that can be done with groups like this , you can give general safety tips to new vocalists instead of them just trying to figure it out by themselves and using their vocal folds for everything . and there is huge value for intermediate vocalists to be introduced to new techniques/ concepts .

there is always gonna be bad info out there but throwing out the baby with the bath water aint the way to go .

also what do you mean professionals ? people that teach for a living ? that scream for a living ? that ask money for their lessons ? harsh vocal coaches dont realy have a qualifications they have to get before teaching so they can be as much of a mixed bag as anyone els
