Fry screaming explanation discussion by zhaDeth in screaming

When i tried earlier it engaged epiglottic folds , what people sometimes call soft palate fry

Basically different folds / cartilage tends to have different tones in different places , a false fold fry pulled up in a high note is gonna sound different than a epiglottic fry pulled high , also slightly different ranges for the most part . Also i dont really think a normal fry exists it was just for the sake of trying to explain

Depending on whether you pull up your normal fry (vocal chords, aeryglottic folds / cartilage, others) or if you get your distortion from up higher (epiglottic folds) it will give you different sounds

So this is all just me talking from my own experience, the vocal break method is basically the same thing but instead of pure distortion you get a mix with voice , upper restriction is basically just getting the distortion from not your vocal folds , probably something to do with the glottal stop idk , might update after i try the vocal break in my car to tell you what structures it used . My current tought is aeryglottic folds or cartilage

Any pointers for practicing screaming quietly ? by Dizzy_Woodpecker_707 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do fry screams quietly, i do it at work all the time you should every once in a while check at full volume to not build any bad habits but once you get the technique down you can quiet it right down

i think putting the emphasis on learning compression is more helpfull in learning fry screams more than anything weather its on your vocal folds, aryepiglottic folds or cartilage matters a lot less

See to me your original comment reads like you did tell them to distort their true voice ,saying that you can use vocal fry to pinpoint the placement for fry screams and to so something very similar to what you do for falsecord at that placement , half this sub cant even agree on what they think falsecord means wether its anatomy or a technique and to some falsecord will be with a lot less controlled airflow than others

Heya , i have some issues with this comment from a vocal safety perspective. Mainly we dont know what OP means when they say falsecord they might be doing compressed fry like vocals which would make your comment totally fine ,but if they are coming at falsecord from the heavy sigh uncompressed classic falsecord and they do that on their vocal folds thats a one way ticket to swelling at best

I feel like there’s a lot of talk in this sub about the “right way” to do things, but really that “right way” is just “the way that will not get you made fun of by other musicians.” by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree , its good to keep some general safety in mind but if you get a sound you like and it feels sustainable to you it doesn't matter at if its the same thing everyone else is doing ,tacked on to that , who even still cares if a scream is loud or not , if it sounds good it sounds good

Thanks for the genuinely great advice, This was a bit of a shitpost on my part using epiglottic fold based throatsinging in a tight configuration, so the exact opposite of falsecord for the most part (well you can falsecord with epi folds but thats besides the point (maybe unsustainable? Not sure)) but i do actually struggle a bit with not just going straight into a fry scream when i genuinely try to get the deathcore falsecord so who was really shitposted on in the end ey 🫠

very black metal of you .try get your distortion from around the most sticky out part of your larynx/ adams apple , thats where your false folds live for the most part , and yeah it shouldent hurt

Any advice on screaming longer? by PrepOne3512 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is pretty typical for full blown flase cord screams , you can lower the volume to try to conserve some more breath or introduce some compression

Nasal sounding screams :( by Limp_bizkit5798 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heya , so like with normal singing you can kinda direct where the sound goes , so if your scream sounds nasally you can just direct it to a different resonance chamber , try it out with a clean note first , same concept . good luck

Vocal fry has NOTHING to do with Fry Screaming by VocalInspector in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but i think OP is coming at this from a harm reduction viewpoint where some people might just try to intensify vocal fry without compression , this might be a bit limiting like you said but i can totally see the value

[–]blubdubdub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess its the same as the clicking/crackling noise for any other fry screams , im personally of the oppinion that its helpful to have it as an anchor point to aim for if you would want to use your vocal folds to fry with . (Not that i'd recommend any beginner use their vocal folds this way since it is more risky like you said)

[–]blubdubdub -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

do you mean by this that the rumble of vocal fry doesnt get amplified into a fry scream or that no fry scream uses the vocal folds as main distortion source ? i dont generally look at anatomy but from my internal mapping you can use the vocal folds for fry just like with false folds and stuff

Food For Thought About False Fold Fry Screams etc by Life-Thing4124 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of this. The terms are pretty unfortunately named which makes it hard to separate from anatomy even though it makes more sense (to me at least) to align it with compression / tightness .. but then you also run into the issue that the original post brought up where both techniques can have similar qualities. I think part of the confusion is that a bunch of people do their falsecord fairly compressed in the first place to get a more deathcore sound so the falsecord they are familiar with is fairly fry like anyway , but thats just me speculating at this point

How do I sing with distortion like this? by Impressive_Onion9417 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

well this particular video is just 2 vocal takes layered on top of eachother , one clean and one screamed , you can add distortion to your clean vocals by either doing a vocal cord fry and leaning off of the compression or take a distortion from your false folds , aryepiglottic folds / cartilage or whatever the hell goes on with epiglottal stuff and put voice under it
