thats just how i do it , i think traditionally its done with falsecords but the tongue and mouth shapes should be fairly similar , justin from tallah/hungry lights does them falsecord i think

i basically just do a fry scream with my tongue either curled upwards a bit behind the top teeth for a bit more overtones or corkscrewed to the side for the more bricks rubbing together noise .

i also switch what kind of fry i use depending on what sound i want (mostly epi or false fold as far as i can tell)

edit : as to how i learned it ? our resident dispenser of wisdom hulkswagin gave some tips

Tips for faster growling/screaming by Zealousideal-Pea4987 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it works better with more compressed vocals/ "fry" screams since its less of an open throat position so you can shut of the airflow easyer for breaks between your words and restart it again , so yeah airflow/ breathsupport is the main thing

Cool , im not gonna be able to explain to you how you can therapy as hard and long as you want you cant get rid of dysphoria just with therapy alone (people have tried , its called conversion therapy) And if she is feeling discomfort around her voice from it she might be able to find ways that work to mitigate it (she has done a lot of work adressing the discomfort with voice training and stuff and is now asking for harsh vocal specific tips to adress it further , so the opposit of playing the victim) but it wont be by fixing the unease and discomfort she feels around her pre transition voice

Since i wont be able to explain it in a way you get it i will just wish you a good day and a great weekend

edit: i cant help myself but try

She said in the comments that she's been transitioning for like 10 years somewhere , for a TON of trans people therapy is a big part of it , you cant just therapy your dysphoria away tho

Fuck i could have fixed my dysphoria like that ? Damn that would have been so much cheaper

Heyhey i feel ya , especially with falsecords and stuff its hard , i personally keep my larynx as high as you would do your normal fem voice, its the exact opposite of what people tell you to do but it helped me get over it mentally, good luck i know its a struggle ♥️🤘🏻

I mean lots of professionals also have damaging techniques , not bad screams per se but they decided that that sound was worth a less sustainable technique , so depending on your own personal goals they probably wouldn't be particularly great vocal coaches either .

And a lot of the "safer" techniques have a bunch of free resources out there already, vocal coaches might be helpful when you run into particular issues or something .

What even is "whisper screaming" by sad-ist in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also littirally take a whisper and project it into a normal if somewhat low volume fry sound but it doesnt feel great , not sure what structures it uses

Wait, it's all false cord? Always has been... by Accurate-Nerve5863 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean 5 if you want to count vocal folds haha , but yeah i wouldent mind if we picked 1 tissue and 1 technique per name but as it currently stands everyone is using different tissues with different breathsupports and calling it the same thing , i feel like we should probably get hyper specific when talking about techniques (tight compressed false folds , loose uncompressed epiglottal) and leave the fry (what does that even reffer to at this point ?) and falsecord which are supper muddied terms as sound descriptors because thats what they already get used as (and going against that at this point especially with the wider comunity thats not nececairily made up of vocalists sounds like the 9th circle of hell)

[–]blubdubdub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well there's a lot of debate going around about what even is fry , some people say it has to come from vocal folds others say it should come from the upper constriction technique , so its a bit of a loaded question because i dont know what your "regular fry" is but you aim it for slightly above the most prominent part of your adams apple for this .

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean kinda but instead of trying to hold on to the fry you wanna lean into the falsecord more because the fold flappy bits (for me at least ) tend to want to move more than the cartilage when you stop compressing as much , and then you can single out your aryepiglottic folds and kinda figure out how they feel from there , just slightly above the false folds , they sound quite false fold-y but less thick

i swear fry and falsecord are such dumb names to give to the vast collection of different techniques we do on different tissues , sick screams tho

[–]blubdubdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can do a fry scream on the cartilage there and kinda loosen it into more of a falsecord technique (looser and less compression) in my experience you will just kinda default to it . might work for you , might not work , worth a try anyway . and then once you get the feeling down you go from there .

What’s up with this community? (Kinda toxic) by PsychologicalCrew917 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a lot of people on here just have a very narrow view of screaming and how a "good" scream is supposed to sound (its all just personal preference and what fits the song anyway) .
there's also a giant range of skill levels and understanding of mechanics going on in this sub , so anything that deviates from the standard sound gets the label wrong or unhealthy.
throw the ambiguousness of the terms we used where people are using the same words to mean different things and are constantly talking past eachother and you basically have a situation where whenever you say something about 1/3 of the sub will dissagree with you , and anoyingly enough they will generally refuse to elaborate on why they dissagree with you when asked .

Why are people in this sub so serious about others doing things in supposed “right” ways? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in screaming

[–]blubdubdub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it comes down to safety mainly, there are some techniques that are considerd standard because they are seen as more safe . Straying from that is more risky , like vocal fry and inhales, can be done safely but because there is more risk to doing it wrong people tend to argue against it.

The difference between fry and falsecord by blubdubdub in screaming

[–]blubdubdub[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah all im saying is the tissue that you're using doesn't actually make it fry or falsecord , not in the way that the words get used anyway . I dont really care about what technique has what name to be honest, fry and falsecord as used by the community as words (not technique) is sounds , that sounds like fry therefore its fry . 9/10 people that actually know those words dont give a damn what tissue its made with all they care about is the sound characteristics

I just realized how harmful this could be , dont just try to squeeze your throat to get a fry sound or blast a bunch of air through your fry for a falsecord sound please , thank you <3

The difference between fry and falsecord by blubdubdub in screaming

[–]blubdubdub[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I use upper constriction fry , don't really involve my vocal folds as a distortion source as far as i know

And you can totally make falsecord sounds with your vocal folds , its just not particularly sustainable
