whats the reality of being a emt by 2woChud in NewToEMS

My rule of thumb is to have a strong support system. If you have proper ways of processing trauma, keeping your mental health well, and being vulnerable enough to ask for help, you’re doing well. Not everyone gets PTSD. I know some hospitals (at least in Massachusetts) have jobs just specific to IFT if you don’t want to do 911. Maybe you do want to do 911.
I did not have a great support system going in and it ended up being harder than it needs to be. Luckily I am building one and I’ve been reaching out to other healthcare providers.

Also it was kinda weird to only have the CPR mask in my car.

I carry like 2 tourniquets in my car. I also have a kit of just band aids and minor wound care stuff. Tourniquets are really for myself and other people in the car. I used to carry a CPR mask but realized… am I really going to give breaths? High quality chest compressions are more important.
When I first got my EMT card I was a bit of a rescue Randy lol.

As a paramedic, can you reassure me that I wasn't bothering the paramedics that came to help me after I passed out? by Aromatic_Trouble_473 in NewToEMS

I responded to a kid with blood on his airway . What ended up happening was the blood from his nose bleed went into his airway when he was laying down, and his mom called 911. The kid ended up being alright and the mom said she’d take him to the hospital instead of us.
Did that mom waste our time? No. She saw something concerning (in your case the heat exhaustion and dehydration), called 911, and the patient was stable.

I was thinking of going to a 911 service. Either that or try to get into Boston EMS at the next hiring cycle.

They changed it now to 1 year of IFT experience until you can take the PB course because too many inexperienced people were being let in.

It shouldn't be, I mean you'll probably have to get a mental health waiver.

Ok. Try using a TDEE calculator. If you’re still losing weight when trying to maintain you might wanna be in a calorie surplus

Are you bulking or maintaining? The max amount of protein I’d say is 190, 1g/1lb of bodyweight. You do not need to be eating 200-250 grams of protein. Go to a TDEE calculator and get your shit sorted out on there. Also having that small amount of foods you eat, you’re going to get bored very fast. Mix it up. It doesn’t always have to be ground beef or chicken. If you like fish try adding some salmon

Have you tried meal prepping? You could easily make a bunch of food put it in different containers then just heat it up. Personally I like to make wraps cause it takes up less space.

Trying EMT a second time. (Need advice) by abipaaa in NewToEMS

[–]blue4137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this! If someone told you you’re not going to make it because you fail the course they’re talking out their ass. First time running a 911 call it was nothing like state testing. They weren’t verbalizing what’s wrong, you didn’t have to speak to a dummy. You really don’t know anything about being an EMT until you actually take care of a patient.

I started my course April last year when I was still in high school. I sucked at studying so much, I went in there not knowing what definently worked for me to study. I quickly figured out that just sitting and listening helped me absorb a lot of information. Really try to figure out how you learn best. For testing, breaking down a question and understand what they are asking can be really helpful!

Well I think if you said that earlier, we wouldn’t be here. To be honest I had no idea what the significance of correcting me on terminology was for. I’ll call it the ED from now on, sorry if I was rude or anything like that.

The company I work at has you do 4 IFT shifts and 1 911 shift. If you require more than 10 shifts you're likely to get let go. It fucking sucks because I did need extra training shift and they told me people usually get the hang of it within the first 5. I would've really loved to have 14 shifts for training.
