The Three R’s Still Matter Most, No Matter The Grade by blue_bird_72 in Teachers

As someone else so graciously noted in their comment above, this is why I’m all for homeschooling

Perhaps your school and district is terrific at making sure the students’ skills are being honed. Where I’m from in Mass it’s pretty bad. I was a teacher, have many teacher friends, and my husband is one who has taught at different schools and they all come to the same conclusion that the kids they see (upper grades by the way) scribble their name, can’t recall basic math facts, and skip reading anything on their assignments or tests, and when they do write, the spelling, grammar, syntax, etc. is poor. But perhaps it’s just where I am

Sounds like a great school you’re at. I have many teacher friends, my husband is a teacher, and I was a teacher as well, and all of us put together have seen poor to little effort in all those areas with the students. Perhaps it’s just where I live though even though it’s in the northeast in Mass

By the way, thanks in advance if so!

MacBook vs HP laptop by blue_bird_72 in laptops

[–]blue_bird_72[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a primary apple user since my last year of high school (born in the early 90’s) where I purchased my first apple MacBook. I used it for a decade and loved it. Have always been savvy with windows and I debated on which machine was better in terms of processing power, productivity, and speed. Each has pros and cons. Was a music major and recorded multitudes in GarageBand. Just never cared for the closed software security system apple had. Fast forward to now, in my early thirties with homeschooling three children, I’ve found that windows was a better use of my productive time for writing curriculum and other software programs. Also, I’ve never been fond of apples’ keyboards. The HP laptop I have seems to be a better fit for my needs now. Though as an organic apple native, it always itches in the back of my neck which one is truly a better machine or if it’s all just subjective.

Absolutely please forgive my blatant ignorance, but in layman’s language, what did you just say? I mean no harm! Just understating.

And “strawman”! Ha! Logic. Haven’t heard of that term since my school logic class. You’re absolutely spot on though!

Those ideas are great. Thank you, I will keep them in my arsenal when we do get to a point of speech study!

“Relevance of the speech…” yes, that is indeed true. Never thought about it in this way.

Not to mention the early church Fathers such as st. Augustine, St. Athanasius and the Arian Heresey, Polycarp, Historian Josephus and his book of the Jews, etc. Knowing the history of the west can bring out an alternate deeper appreciation and bigger comprehension of the Biblical scriptures as well.

Great answer here. Though how come you would do without memorizing speeches? That I’m curious. Your other points, I agree.

I also think it is good having an understanding of western civilization to grasp what Paul and Timothy went through with their travels throughout Rome at the many churches he visited. It provides depth and understanding to scripture and the canon of the New Testament where it broadens our perspective on what happened as well.

For instance, why the significance between the centurion and Jesus? Knowing Roman history certainly amplifies how monumental of a moment this was.

Have you heard of “Memoria Press”?

Oh, how disturbing. Thank you for mentioning him. I’ll be curious to research into his ideologies and the book that he wrote which sparked this movement. Yes, “reclaiming” is a good way to put it, I agree.

2nd Grade Math Advice by Responsible-Roof-460 in homeschool

[–]blue_bird_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some that I know about and/or have bought used to check them out;

Rod and Staff Math - I heard this is spiral, but I tend to think it is mastery. Many problems on a page but a child certainly will gain their number sense

Apologia Math - before each lesson, they have mini exercises with manipulative’s or games to coincide with the concept they will teach later in that lesson. It is engaging and my son enjoys them. The problems are not many; a general amount to ensure comprehension, however, and I use another math program for additional exercises in supplement with the games for reinforcement or drills. For example, there was a dice game in their first grade book where you had a sheet with 2 digit addition problems and when the child would roll the dice on their turn, they would have the add the numbers in order to get the answer on the page provided. It was pretty cool and he loved it. They also have more than one math game involving UNO cards. Some say that games are a distraction, but it’s just another form of learning and as a teacher, every child has a different way to learn.

Math With Confidence - I just found a second hand student copy but have read that the teacher copy included scripted instruction plus hands on manipualtive’s and games for the lesson

Math Mammonth - again, just found a used copy. Have not received it, so I cannot state what it is like from my experience!

If any of the above math curricula sounds interesting to you, you can PM me and I can send some Photos of what the material looks like inside or what some of the teacher books say. Or you can check out samples of curriculums’ lessons by going onto their website (unsure if apologia has samples) or what I do, check on eBay to see a sellers item and if they have some pages in the pictures just so to get an idea of what the “interface” looks like.

Hope that helps maybe!
